• Apple TV+ "Foundation" is not based on books

From Your Name@21:1/5 to All on Sat Feb 5 09:39:21 2022
For those who didn't already realise it, this is (almost) straight from
the horse's mouth .. or maybe that should be ass's mouth ...

While The Morning Show was lauded for its serious
star power, Foundation was viewed as a far more
challenging project in purely creative terms. The
Isaac Asimov novels on which the eponymous series
was to be based have such a massive scope that
many had tried - and failed - to successfully
adapt them to the screen. Even HBO couldn't crack
that particular nut, and an attempt at a
Foundation series on that network never made it
    past the initial concept stages.

The Apple TV+ series' Executive Producer, David
    S. Goyer, solved this problem by taking quite a
few liberties in interpreting the Foundation
novels, to the point where the result is only
loosely based on Asimov's work. To put it
another way, this all takes place in the
Foundation universe, features some of the same
characters and overarching plot points, but
    otherwise tells a fundamentally different
    narrative.

The move has alienated some fans of Asimov's
original trilogy, but as long as you're willing
to set that aside and see Foundation as a new
story, perhaps something more akin to fan fiction,
it's an enjoyable show that's both sophisticated
    and well put together.

The thing is, with the budget they had, they could have done it well,
and it would have been even more successful, making enough money to
finance filming the rest of Asimov's work, even his essay collections.

be careful what you ask for, you might get it. Just one word:

Be thankful that it wasn’t Starship Stormtroopers. Or, worse, that anime Lensman atrocity. https://manga.fandom.com/wiki/Lensman_(anime) says, and I quote:

"Despite sharing character and organization names, as well as central themes common to the books, heavy artistic license was taken resulting in a final product altogether very different from the source material.â€

No kidding. The ‘creative’ team behind that Bokonian-influenced abortion was badly in need of some up close and personal attitude. correction from a Valerian space-axe.

That's how Hollywerid works. "Based on" / "adapatations" rarely stick
to the original - even when it's a remake of their own products (like
Disney!). They usually claim that it's because it isn't filmable or
requires too much money, but the real reasons are because the fool they
hire doesn't have the creative talent to do it properly, and/or has a
massive ego so thinks they know better then the original's creator how
it "should" have been done, and/or because the beancounters and
    management morons keep inteferring. :-(

If truth in advertising laws were enforced, they'd have to
advertise it as "Based on the title of a popular book we haven't
