    Just curious.

    Does the Windows kernel produce a stream of messages at boot and
    shutdown. Similar to the Linux kernel.

    Yes. You can see them in Event Viewer.

    Yes.  You can see them in Event Viewer.

    I suspected as much. Those messages aren't written to the desktop
    (which is probably covered by an image; there is no separate X server
    that needs to start before the wallpaper can show.)
