So I was bored yesterday and started on a new BBS package (because
that's what I do when I am bored).
So far I have logins and signups working and reading squish message

I'd give anything to have your skill set and move to redoing the
old source code to Renegade or Virtual Advance 5.0 source code.

I'd love to see squish and *.msg support in Magicka. I don't think
I'd use *.msg for a lot but there are times when *.msg support
comes in handy. Makenl only has support for *.msg and some games
use *.msg to attach files to be sent to other nodes. The GAC games
come to mind.
I haven't actually setup netmail on the BBS yet but I wonder, does
Magicka do AKA matching, so if I write a netmail to an fsxNet node
it uses my fsxNet AKA and if I write one in fidonet it uses my
fidonet AKA?

Give Magicka a try and give your feedback and ideas to Apam. It's not Renegade or VA I know, but it's off the a good start.

hi is the a bbs software if so were can i download it from would
love to play around with it
I don't think I will be adding squish support to magicka,
from what I can tell JAM is better.
.MSG could be useful though.
I'm a bit tired of working on it today, so might pick it up later.
Anyway, just having fun. :)
I had thought someone was working on renegade?
Yes, you can get the magicka source with git. Instructions are on the magicka bbs homepage at http://magickabbs.com.
Once you have done that you will have docs in your MagickaBBS/docs directory. If you have questions there is help for you here.. :)

I don't think I will be adding squish support to magicka,
I always prefered squish because they don't need purging and packing as frequently as jam bases.

That could be so. I don't know the technical differences between jam and squish.
I started with Squish in the 90s and I still like it, never
understood the advantages of JAM.
What is better with JAM?

It would be. It's the lowest common denominator and at times I need it so I have to have a *.MSG area here. ATM, I just have one netmail area here. It's *.MSG since it covers all my bases.
Thanks for posting this up here. I'm going to play the village
idiot for a second (even though my ex has another name for this
title). Just picked up ArcaOS 5.0.4 personal today...added on an
extra year of support & got a Lenovo Thinkcentre M72e Thin Client
G465 1.9GHz 8GB/4GB F/R W7SE w/ AC/DVD WiFi for a $50 offer.
Wonder if there would be a way to complie Magicka code to run on
OS/2 updated code base with the libraries available? Am not a
programmer & I know it makes me sound like an idiot...but wanted to
ask.
I seem to remember that one of the reasons folks wanted to get away
from *.MSG was because of the space hardly any of us had/could
afford at the time. If this is the case...would it really matter
what format you use if you have the excess space?
That sounds like fun. I ran OS/2 back before IBM threw in the towel. I
was so dissapointed back then.
I've looked at ArcaOS with interest but I have so many things on the go already that I never get time to have a serious look and I think linux covers all my needs.. so..
I'm not sure of what kind of OSs Magicka can run on. OS/2 or ArcaOS are going to have drive letters. That might throw a wrench into the gears. It may not either since there are many softwares (Synchronet comes to mind) that can be built on Windows/Linux/Mac/Pi.
Apam has been building and running a BBS on windows recently. Makes
me think he may be working that into Magicka.. but I don't know. I
suspect he may comment on your post.
With *.MSG bases you get 1.msg, 2.msg etc in a directory for each area. I wouldn't even go there.. ;)
In my case using MagiMail or HPT I have support for that format. I have a couple utilities/games that use it, just for sending file attaches so I have a *.MSG netmail base that those utilities can drop stuff in and MagiMail or hpt will send them off to where they need to go.
about predate fileboxes. Back then attaching files to a message (think FrontDoor) was the we we moved stuff. Today I'd avoid it if at all possible.

ArcaOS too? OS/2 was my main OS in the 90s, but I never used eCS or ArcaOS. Tried to install Warp

to figure out the problem.

I remember that with Telegard. Also remember the guys were were

Had no idea after 30 years...people would even consider it.
I've looked at it too. Very tempting, but have to be realistic for
now. When I get a bit more money, I might buy a copy and possibly
a system to run it on, instead of using a VM. I'm not sure what
software I'd run on it. I could resurrect my old system as a
museum piece, or look for something native.
But is there any OS/2 netive software in current development?

In my case it seems to come up from time to time. There are other ways to do it for just for the occasional *.msg, netmgr or cfroute.
Telegard come to mind. Both designed for dial-up although I know a couple of Maximus BBSs still up and running today on OS/2.
The GFD (German File Distribution) is still vibrant today, making available lots of OS/2 stuff.
If anyone would like a link for those files I have them here along with all the usual stuff.

Much much worse than that. The stations I was working at were using
FAT16 with DOS for the Phantom software. Eventually...the author
started using FAT32 & Windows to run his system...but the wasted space

idea of setting the software up under FreeDOS...but never had the time

Ah yes Hudson used smaller datatypes and would run out as harddrives and echoes got bigger and more numerous. Yeah Goldbase increases quite a bit over Hudson for sure. I only know of QuickBBS ever using it, and I know this since I recently got a QuickBBS system up and running and using Goldbase. However it's very limiting to what tools you can use with it

The thing is if it had worked...we would've saved other companies from losing their HDD space to an antiquated file system. The big bug in the
room may have been the company not wanting their software running on
top of an open source project. Part of the same bug was if the software was being run on top of a license to only run with MS-DOS...that

it's a bit less meaningful. Sure, we know there's going to be considerable "slack space" (as it was termed back in the day), but how serious that issue depends on the number of files on disk and the
average percentage of the file's last cluster used. A *.MSG messagebase

I just spent a lot of hours on it (the past 7 hours or so) and its
nowhere near functional, but I can open the configuration and do local logins to the BBS now. When I first got the BBS to compile just about nothing worked, so its been a long road so far.
Nodespy compiles now too but I haven't even bothered trying that yet.
The hardest parts remain. Besides the general debugging I have to get
all of the server, threading, local I/O, SSL and socket code all
working in OS2. This isn't small task and will take a lot of research
of API and trial and error, so it may be something I never finish. But for the most part "MIS" is the only thing remaining to port and get working.

It'd be a lot of work for a small reward (like 1 or 2 people would probably play with it a bit and no one would use it). At least thats

Yeah haven't had one of those dreams for ages, but I can imagine! :)Not quite sure what you mean there. :)
Was very lucky nothing bad happened to me not having the levels I usually do.
BTW...found a use for old medicine bottles. The normal sized ones wil allow you to put 2 USB thumb drives in there & put on the lid. That sounds rather useful, actually! :)

It is because it keeps them together & out of harm's way. Am a firm believer in Murphy's Law. Got tons of them...since my state health care plan only allows me to get 30 days worth of meds at a time.

Was an anti-depressant. Am going to head over to my appointment in
about an hour. Gonna ride the scooter over to enjoy the weather & the
ride. Am binging a program shot in your neck of the woods in the early 90's called Time Trax. The main character rides a Harley & says he
loves the feel of the breeze on his face. Same thing here.
It's gotten to the point I come across anything with AUS in the listing...I have to watch it. That & the BBC are about the only thing I usually watch. Another show I'm watching as well is Death in Paradise. Sort of like Monk & Sherlock...but I find it much more funny.
I feel kind of less educated when I watch something & I have to look up the slang. For instance...Mrs. Brown's Boys takes place in
Ireland...but still need to head to Google to see what some of the
slang means.

Been there 2 years. One thing which bothers me is anything like this

Got it done last night. Formatted a USB card reader as FAT16 & booted
the ThinkCentre into DOS. Still not able to do the upgrade...pulled out the reader & put it on my main system & moved the files to the root.
Put it back in & restarted the box. Everything went automatically like
it was supposed to. Now...got a BIOS update which is current & less

BIOS upgrades after a year or so.
