• How do I get a folder in "thumbnails" mode to (re)sort ?

    Hello al,

When I put a folder into "thumbnails" mode (and on "auto arrange") and
rename a file it stays where it is, and I cannot find a key combination to force the folder to resort its contents. I always have to switch to "list" mode, press F5 and switch back.

Does anyone know how to get a folder in "thumbnails", "auto arrange" mode to re-sort itself ?

By the way: is there a key combination to switch between a folders display
    modi ?

    Regards,
    Rudy Wieser

You might take that as a strong suggestion that just pressing F5 was the
    first thing I tried.

LOL! You are correct. I had the same problem with XP and since it has been a while, i don't quite
    remember but it was solved.

No answer, only to say that "Arrange icons by" with "Name and Auto
Arrange" selected, then tapping F5 works for me here.

Also closing - reopening the folder (without using F5) also works with
    those menu items selected.

    Mike,

Auto Arrange" selected, then tapping F5 works for me here.

I just renamed an entry, and was suprised that F5 worked.

That is, until I thought of dragging one item around and dropping it at the same place it came from - than it jumped to a new, out of order place, and
no F5-ing or closing the folder and re-opening it would make it go anywhere else.

And now renaming another item and pressing F5 again doesn't do anything
anymore (other than moving the view to the very first item)

    Yep, its odd. :-|

Hello Rudy, yes it is odd. It's also a feature that I don't use. I had
only tried it out to see how it worked, after reading the 1st post in
    this thread.

I use the FastStone Image Viewer, which is blazingly fast as a
thumbnail viewer and general image viewer, come editor plus. <http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm>

Comes at a good price (free) ;-)
    And still supported on XP.

Hello Rudy, yes it is odd.

I assume that means you got the same results as I described.

    It's also a feature that I don't use.

I do not use it often. But I do have a folder with all kinds of desktop backgrounds and another with webpage background tiles, and sometimes even
use it to "sort" (game) textures (rename them to group certain ones
    together).

I use the FastStone Image Viewer,

I also have a third-party image viewer, but sometimes being able to open a folder and drag-and-drop a new image into it (from a webpage and than rename it) is usefull.

Oh well, its not like I can't work around (what I consider to be) a bug in
    one of MS-es flagship products. :-) :-(

Regards, and thanks for testing it,
