  • NEWS: Claris releases FileMaker 19

    "Pro" has been dropped from the name.

    I've only had time for a very quick look, but it appears to have only a ridiculous monthly plan pricing system and no option to buy the app
    normally.

    It also looks like Claris are trying to turn FileMaker into more than
    just a database app by shoehorning in stuff from their Connect app
    development system. The likely result will be that it becomes messy and over-complicated, and probably losing what made it such a great
    *database* app to use in the first place. :o(

    Nope, I was wrong. Further investigation finds that you can still buy individual licenses (US$540) from the Claris webstore, where it's still
    called "FileMaker Pro 19": <https://store.claris.com/individuals>

    Yeah, nothing that would motivate me to get this new version.

    I do neither see improvements for manual data entry, nor for data
    security or tracking of data changes. I guess there is a market for this
    trend where FMP aims at, I just don't recognize it.

    biggest sensation since FMP7? Yes, I do see a change of paradigm.

    But is this that important?

    FMP7 had the changes to multiple tables within a single file. Yes, this
    was a significant change. But what now?

    Some time ago, FMP announced SQL support - but what it did to it was
    crippled so much, I really doubt it will have reasonable JS support.

    However, the chart capabilities looked nice. I'll have a look into it.

    Yes, I'm stuck with this "planned obsolescence" too...
    powerfull hardware that can't be upgraded, Applications that won't
    support older OSes, older Application that won't read newer documents
    and newer Application that won't save in older formats, etc.

    I feel it's difficult to keep a version compatible with each hardware or
    MacOS version.

    Skipping Rosetta code was somehow ok for my still current FMP11 -
    although something should have been done at that time to repair .xls
    export.

    So I do not really expect the old FMP11 to run on a new MacOS (one of
    the reasons why I still do stick to MacOS 10.10).

    However, building a new FMP which does not run on old MacOS, that's more annoying. I don't know the reasons.

    It will absolutely prevent me from buying a new FMP version at that
    stage, when it is obvious that Apple will jump to a perfectly new
    chipset in the future.

    Maybe a cloud service will permit to use FMP both on old and new Apple hardware, even better than the current setup. Maybe a monthly fee will
    prove cheaper than a one-time purchase, which will be useless with the
    next computer.

    But currently FMP will have to prove this guess - and from the former experience I do not feel that they do mind very much about customers' satisfaction or well known problems or expectations.
