Yah, unlike the big sales of the last few years there a few notable games
at very low prices, probably historically low. While most of the games
on sale aren't actually much of a deal, and they have been often on sale
at the same price or even cheaper in the past, this time there are at
    least a few exceptions.

Steam new "Featured Deep Discounts" category seems to have been a
big factor. I think it's more than it just surfacing these discounts.
It looks like publishers have intentionally targeted it with thier
discounts. It seems to have worked out for them as well, as these games
are showing up on the global top 100 sellers list despite the fact its
    ranked by revenue.

For example, Euro Truck Simulator 2 is currently #20 on the list,
though DLC may be more a factor than people paying $2 for the base game.
Disco Elysium is at #47 and that would be almost entirely people buying
the base game at $4, as it doesn't have much in the way of DLC.

A few other notably cheap games (US prices):

    $1.99 American Truck Simulator
    $2.49 Middle-earth: Shadow of War
    $1.99 Batman: Arkham Knight
    $2.99 Frostpunk

All at their lowest Steam price, though the last two were given away
for free in the past by Epic Games.

A couple of times I almost pulled the trigger on it because it seems
to be highly regarded overall, and has been available on the cheap
(not sure about specific editions but the base game at least) on and
    off for a while.

I might play it one of these days but I got the impression it's not a
Skyrim replacement or clone in the sense that you're not going to have
weird dragons, monsters and skeletons and shit coming at you. It's
meant to be more historically accurate.

So that could be fun, but generally if I'm going for a Skyrim
replacement vibe, I want all that goes with it.

I remember reviews saying the combat is fiddly until you get used to
it but in the end its very worthwhile.

It's not. Or rather, if you go into the game expecting a "Skyrim, but
better" you'll probably be disappointed. Certainly if you take into
the game all the lessons "Skyrim" has taught us.

I /like/ "Kingdom Come: Deliverance"* but its not without its flaws.
    it's combat is /much/ more finicky; it's somewhat like a Souls-like in
that you need to learn the mechanics to have any chance of success
(the random flailing click-click-bash of "Skyrim" battles will earn
you a quick death in "Kingdom Come") but it lacks the smoothness
and... gamish fun of the Souls-likes. There's also a lot less to DO in "Kingdom Come"; "Skyrim" practically had another adventure hook at
every street corner, but KC is much more modest in scale.

It's an absolutely gorgeous game, though, and it's attempt at
historical accuracy gives it a uniqueness that carries it fairly well.
But for all its Bethesda-inspired flaws, I found "Skyrim" a much more playable experience. You have to /work/ to have fun in "Kingdom Come".

TL;DR: Both are well worth playing for fans of the genre, but I think
they're different enough that saying one is better than the other
    isn't fair to either.

Agreed, superficial they may look similar but the way they play is
vastly different. The combat I found rather hard and it did feel that
although I understand why they did it that way maybe having an option
for those of us for whom combat isn't what we play games for.

I do see a few things I'd like on the frontpage of summer sale, but
they're about the $30-$40 that they're often at (and what the ER DLC is
and is probably bigger than any of the full games,) I've got too much
else to play, and EDF 6 coming out soon (co-op with my daughter,) so
they'd probably end up in my "Pile of Shame" which I don't want to add to.

I'll skip the sale this year.

Visit the Steam mean page and scroll down to the "Under $10" section.
There should be a "See more: ... Under $5" button just below it on the
right. Click on that and you'll see a list of under $5 games sorted by "Relevance" (which seems to be ordered by sales) and you can switch that
    to "User Reviews".

If you can't find it you can also just click on the search box at the
top right of the of the main page and press enter. (ie. search for an
empty string.) Then change the "Narrow by Price" slider to "Under $5".
You'll probably also want to select only "Games" under the "Show selected types" filter on the right.

    Is exit 8 any good?

    I mean, I enjoyed it. It's a got a good mechanic (walk down a
corridor; if something seems 'off' from your last transition, turn
around. Otherwise continue forward. 'Off' can vary from an additional
door in the wall to some nightmarish horror sprinting at you). It's a
weird mix of puzzle and horror, although mostly the terror is of your
own making ("Did I miss something? Was that pattern on the floor
different this time? Were those posters on the left wall or the
right?"). It has nice -if simple- visuals and the occassional horror
is just spooky enough to be fun.

As stated, the game's biggest sin (and, arguably, strength) is its
brevity. The above mechanic is /all/ the game has. If you the RNG
works in your favor and it gives you identical "safe" corridors 8
times, you can literally finish the game in a minute. Even if you are extremely cautious, you'll probably finish the game in less than ten
minutes. Replaying it a few more times to see the various options you
missed might double that. It's an incredibly short game.

I think the experience is worth the time. What I am not sure is if it
is worth the price, even discounted.

Huh, that sounds like that one cancelled tech demo game PT

    There are similarities.

"Exit 8" is a more complete game, short as it is. It has a definitive
start and end, whereas "PT" left you wanting more. "PT" was also more
openly horrific. But both games were brief explorations of a very
short game mechanic, and both utilized looping corridors.

"PT" was free, though; I'll give it that. I don't blame the developer
of "Exit 8" for charging for the game; a person's gotta make a living,
after all, and the concept and execution is solid. I just don't think
what's being offered is /quite/ worth the price.

Right, right. It definitely sounds interesting.

download and install ;-) so there's little excuse to not play it. ;-)

Even if you are >extremely cautious, you'll probably finish the game in less than ten
minutes. Replaying it a few more times to see the various options you
missed might double that. It's an incredibly short game.

I think the experience is worth the time. What I am not sure is if it
is worth the price, even discounted.

So basically a psilocybin walking sim.

The Steam Summer Sale has begun, and you know what that means.

Yeah! It means I snagged Exit 8, Doom Eternal, Serious Sam 4, and Dragon >>>>>Age 2 for around $25.

Throw another log on the backlog. Wooooo!

Play "Exit 8" at least. It's short enough that you can finish it in a
single sitting, and it's novel enough to make the experience worth it. >>>> It's really more of a gameplay-demo more than anything else, but
there's something to be said for a game that doesn't overstay its
    welcome.

(well, so long as you didn't pay too much for it. I paid ~$4USD and
felt it was a bit overpriced for what it offered, but the game was
still new. It gave me < 30 minutes play-time to see most of the
variations. Hopefully you snagged it for less)

Well I have now picked up The Witched III at £2.49!

Congrats, great game, and very satisfying to finish! I've a hankering to
go back to W1 and play it again, but that seems like a dumb move. They're remaking it now apparently, if I live that long.

I played a lot, and enjoyed*, W:1 and was really looking forward to W:2
but it just didn't grab me in the same way at all and I think I even
restarted it three times before I finally gave up. When W:3 came out I therefore gave it a pass. Reading some of the comments on here that it's
a lot better than W:2 I thought well I give it a try then especially as
it was the sky high price of £2.49!

*One bit I really hated was the wolf battle, the end of chapter 1 I
think. I tried several times, getting nowhere, before I ran to YouTube
to see what I was missing. Oh I need to spend most of my time running
around in circles, why didn't I think of that!
