What Have You Been Playing... IN AUGUST 2024?

    Amnesia: The Bunker
The best part of the last Amnesia title I played, Rebirth (I'll try to attach that review to this one), was the first half of the game, where you
are in tunnels and a bunker, trying to avoid a nasty monstar. So I was interested enough in The Bunker to play and complete it (included with pc gamepass).

The premise is being trapped in a WW1 military bunker where your only companions are many horribly mutilated bodies and quite a nasty monster,
that is attracted to sound and which periodically patrols your general vicinity. If you've played Alien Isolation, you know exactly the tense atmosphere and the basic gameplay loop that The Bunker provides: You'll
make repeated forays out into the dark and creepy tunnels to gather fuel, supplies, clues, tools, weapons, and keys, so as to delve deeper (uh oh!), uncover the story behind the tunnel system and the monstar's presence, and finally escape.

As in Alien Isolation, you can't reason with the beast, nor can you kill it. But! you can scare it away with molotovs, grenades, or well-aimed shots,
or -- again as in Alien Isolation -- hide under tables and bunks till she
goes away. The game does a solid job with weapon animations and handling,
and the feeling of immersion is high. Lighting and audio contribute greatly
to the oppressive and tense atmosphere as you explore the ruins.

You'll have to decide whether this basic gameplay loop appeals, as you'll repeatedly be re-entering tunnel sections, like the Prison, Maintenance, Soldier's Quarters and Arsenal to explore, gather what you can, and scurry
back to your base before the generator (and the lights) run out. My big suggestion is to play on Easy difficulty, as otherwise the Stalker's
frequent appearances will be more aggravating then exciting, and save often
at the several savepoints scattered about; stealth and exploration are large gameplay components. The game atmosphere I did find fairly oppressive and a bit depressing, and I was a bit relieved to reach the ending -- exactly the relief you should feel to succeed at a dark and scary game! -- after
~12hours (I played some on Normal before restarting on Easy), with 24/44 achievements. I see that only 4.7% of gamers finished the game, that has to
be disappointing for the devs. I have no complaints to speak of, and if a tense horror experience is what you are looking for Amnesia: The Bunker provides it in spades!

    Amnesia: Rebirth
First a shocking confession: I haven't played either of the preceding
Amnesia titles, though back in the day did play at least Penumbra Overture
(and Outlast), so had an idea of the first-person hide-and-seek gameplay.

I put some 15 hours into Rebirth, and it a solid B grade, but not higher. It actually felt long, and I was more relieved it was over than excited at the ending. The gameplay loop of exploration, simple physical puzzle solving,
and occasional hiding or frenetic running from evil spirits reaches it's
peak for me in the middle of the game as you explore an abandoned and
haunted fort in the middle of the African desert.

Subsequent to this, though -- **spoilers here** -- there's an abrupt change
of scenery to an alien world that took me out of the excellent tense
atmosphere that had been carefully built up to this point: I felt as if I
was playing two different games, and that this reduced the impact of the
whole. If Frictional had explored the desert mythology more and kept the world-building 'grounded', if you will, in this mythology I'd be more
    pleased with the result.

Helpfully for the player, if you die, you are resurrected near where you
died, and you can save anywhere, with a history of savegames kept -- but at
the cost of exiting the present game, so no quicksave spamming allowed. My
only specific complaint is that in a couple levels I couldn't avoid being caught and killed, yet somehow resurrected beyond the point I was stuck at. This may be by design, but was a little surprising and removed just a touch
of the sense of accomplishment at getting past a hard bit. An xbox
    controller worked well for me.

    Just a little Fallout: London.

Getting it going starting from an installation broken by the recent-ish
updates was a little meta game in itself. One of the stumbling blocks
was also that I wasn't up to speed with mod managers.

Apparently Nexus Mod Manager is now Nexus Mod Manager Community Edition
but hasn't been updated to handle Fallout: London specific mods. Vortex
seems to be the appropriate mod manager now. I actually also tried Mod Organizer 2 but got only crashes.

Anyways, I now have a stable setup with a small handful of
near-essential mods and ENB for some extra eye candy.

As for the London mod, I'm kind of two minds about it. Pros are, it's
London and I've been reading the Cormoran Strike detective stories
recently which describe London in such detail I've been wanting to
visit. This post-apoc view of London is at least a substitute for my
travel fever. Also, the mod's Fallout which I like. Except for the
    things I don't like...

On the negative side, the mod starts in a rather cliched way, you're an anonymous amnesiac in a secret underground lab. Geez, how original. It
doesn't really pick up from there so it feels I'm looking at a very long mediocre road. At least the opposition isn't that tough, in fact things
seem mostly easy, so far. Human opponents fall to my crap guns, a couple
of other enemies have been bullet sponges but nothing a few grenades
    didn't tame.

Big difference to FO4 seems to be, there's no convenient Red Rocket
station with all the crafting stations available. But with a little exploration, all stations can be found in two locations.

Also, apparently no easy-to-grind-for-leveling radiant quests. Good and
bad, really. If they were there, I probably couldn't help myself, I'd
just grind those to get all the skills I want and then play the game.

    Tiny Tina's Wonderland.
I got past "The Banshee", which was definitely worth it, since
    it is world-changing (literally).

So all that's left is for me to ask.... What Have You Been Pla---

No, wait. Stop. This can't be right. I didn't play ANY games this
    month?

As it turns out, life got really busy this past month and, by all my
usual standards, no I didn't actually play video games in August 2024.
But those 'standards' imply that I've actually stayed with a game long
enough to get a real experience with the title. If it makes my list,
I've got to play it long enough to actually have something to WRITE
about it. But given the lack of material this month, I _may_ have to
    loosen those standards a bit.

[After all, did you really think I was going to let you
get away with only a twenty-line comment? Fuck no! I.
    Don't. Do. Short. Posts.]

So here is an abbreviated list of some of the games that
ever-so-briefly entertained me in August 2024.

    --------------------

    * FlixMix
A long-forgotten DOS-era puzzle game that I recently acquired. At
first I didn't think much of it but it got a lot more longevity out of
it than I expected. It is essentially a jigsaw puzzle game, except all
the pieces have straight edges. This would seem to make it extremely
easy, except the picture you are assembling is animated, which adds a
bit to the challenge. It is still not particularly difficult but I
found it a fun way to pass five or fifteen minutes. There are a
reasonable amount of options to make the game more or less challenging (pieces might appear mirrored or rotated, divide the puzzle into
hundreds of blocks instead of the default thirty, etc.) although these
mostly just add to the amount of time it takes to complete rather than
really requiring more mental gymnastics. A lack of animated images to construct is the game's biggest flaw; it quickly becomes repetitive.
Still, I had a lot more fun with this one than I expected.

    * GalCon Fusion
A mobile re-imagining of the classic Galactic Conquest strategy game.
Conquer planets by flinging fleets of warships at them; if you have
more ships than the enemy, you win the battle (it's purely a battle of attrition). Each planet then starts pumping out more ships for your
fleets. Watch out for attackers going for your own bases; re-deploys
your fleets so you always have the numerical advantage. Conquer all
the planets in the sector before the AI does. It's not very deep and
often is as dependent on how quickly you can move your ships (the game
is real-time entirely controlled by touch-screen) as actual strategy,
but it's a fun way to pass five or ten minutes.

    * Solebon Solitaire
A mobile game focused on Solitaire. Although it has a variety of types
of Solitaire, I mostly just play FreeCell. It's a good looking
rendition of the game but otherwise isn't anything special. The thing
I like most about the app is that it filters out games that are
unwinnable by design (e.g., if the card layout can't be solved, it
doesn't show up). Although that is less of an issue with FreeCell, as
pretty much /any/ layout can be solved if you work hard enough at it.
It's another one of those games I whip out to pass a few minutes
    between more onerous tasks.

    * Euro/American Truck Simulator
Because of course I did. Not that I really played very much of either
-just one session of each, in fact- but both times it kept me busy for several hours. Nothing new to say about either game, though, so I'll
leave just saying that I played them.

    --------------------

Yeah, but really that's about it. It just wasn't a good gaming for
playing games for me this month (honestly, I think I spent more time ACQUIRING new games than actually running them). But an entirely new
month beckons, so hopefully I'll have better luck in September.

Anyway, having dragged this out long enough, NOW I can finally bring
this post to its long-overdue conclusion. So let's finish it off the
way I always finish off these posts, by asking:
