Me, I almost always turn 'em on. Partly, because -yes- I'm getting a
wee bit older and the ears just aren't as good as they used to be. But
also, I read a heck of a lot faster than people talk, and that either
lets me skip through superfluous conversations without missing

So, a definite 'on' for me.

Please provide your short answer below ;-)

Default is "Off". That said unfortunately there are times when one has
to turn them on for some reason like the voice actor is speaking a
    foreign language phonetically. Very badly.

I usually don't play games where characters talk very much so if I had
to pick one here, I would go with C but on the occasion that I do, I
leave subtitles off. I just adjust the various sound sliders (speech,
sound effects, ambient sound, etc) to make sure I can hear what they

I use headphones with the TV in the bedroom, but while gaming I am also listening to music (Old computer is basically a music, video and display computer (game info mostly).)

Oddly enough though, in an rpg I like to have all the numbers pop up on

On, these days. Used to be off unless music or something drowned out the
speech or it was otherwise hard to understand.

I suppose I'm also getting old and, well, I don't have much exposure to
native English speakers currently. I have exactly one US native
colleague, everyone else speaks broken English, more or less. I'd think
that would improve my understanding but apparently not.

Maybe game music could be a topic for another CRAP poll. I can't say I
much remember a theme from any game, apart from some of those from the Commodore 64. Or now that I thought about it, Deus Ex. And Fallout:
NV. Both of the Horizon games a little too, I think the theme music is
the same on Zero Dawn and Forbidden West. But it's pretty rare.

OTOH, licensed music in some games has sometimes become even fairly
    important.

We've done one on that before (not that's stopped me from repeating

(yes, I have a list... largely because I kept repeating poll topics

    Music off? You're _are_ a monster! ;-)

Nothing hits me harder nostalgia wise then hearing the soundtrack
from the games I really care about. Music definitely ON.

Maybe game music could be a topic for another CRAP poll.

We've done one on that before (not that's stopped me from repeating
poll topics). But it's been a while. I'll add it to the list.

(yes, I have a list... largely because I kept repeating poll topics
and wanted to try to avoid that in the future)

Which has now evolved to the point where it is used to repeat topics....

So you're saying I need a list for that too? ;-)

In fairness, we've (most of us) been doin' this Usenet thing for so
long that it's a bit hard _not_ to repeat topics every now and again.

Although if you really want, maybe I could dig up a new game-industry-does-NFT story to keep things fresh? ;-P

How much would we have to pay to get the second paragraph?

This one extra sucks because the creator of Flappy Bird is a
genuinely good person who removed his game out of concern for its
    players.

WTF!?!?!  I didn't think you could take control of a trademark that'd
    been abandoned?

Even so, wouldn't copyright apply?  Don't we have 100 years after the author's death?

I suspect the answer to both questions depends on what country you are in.

There was never a registered trademark for Flappy Bird, and when someone
else attempted to register the trademark the author never took the
opportunity to challenge the application. So the registered trademark
was eventuly granted to someone else, effectively superceding the Flappy
    Bird author's (unregistered) trademark.

Even so, wouldn't copyright apply? Don't we have 100 years after the >author's death?

Copyright only applies to the game, it's code, graphics, story, and stuff
like that. It doesn't apply to the name of the game. There's lots of
games, books, movies and other works that have identical names depsite
being completely unrelated. So the author could presumably sue or issue
DCMA takedown notices against other games and other kinds of works that
copied Flappy Bird too closely (though the gameplay mechanics aren't copyrightable). But as he wants nothing to do with the game anymore,
    that's unlikely to happen.

In the US? Yup. It's called "dilution."

Even so, wouldn't copyright apply? Don't we have 100 years after the >author's death?

Copyright has nothing to do with branding. It protects the exclusive
right to copy and publish specific content.
