And... I'm back. Admit it, you missed me. Seven whole days without
somebody extolling the virtues (or lack thereof) of the Epic Game
Store freebies? It must have been torture for you. But don't worry;
I've got you. Let's go lock and see what freebie is waiting this week.
* Deadtime Defenders https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/deadtime-defenders-3e9fc8
A side-scrolling shooter against various monsters;
wander about, collect new weapons, level up... It's
all rather uninspired. Visually, it looks like a game
I used to play on my iPhone ten years ago. It probably
doesn't help that it's an abandoned Early Access game.
It's not terrible but I just don't see the point.
* Touch Type Tale
https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/touch-type-tale
It's "Typing For the Dead" crossed with real-time
strategy. Type words to vanquish attacking enemies,
collect resources or upgrade buildings. I guess if
you're into this sort of 'typing-tutor-crossed-with-
games', it's unique enough to be interesting, but if
you can already type (or just find the whole concept
dull) this isn't the game to convince you otherwise.
Even without the typing bit, the mechanics are a bit
wonky.
I've got bad news; that's all the free games for now. All that's left
is these last few remarks, and then I'm gone. But don't worry; I'll be
back in seven days. Just hold on for a week and we'll do this all
again.

I instantly regretted cluttering up my epic library with this.

Maybe one of the kids will try this at least. *shrug*

I took them even though I doubt I will play them.
The Number strikes again! Once it gets its hooks in you, forever will
it dominate how you interact with video games. Sadly, there's no known
cure at the moment, so enjoy your five-digit video-game library. ;-)
On a related aside, I recently added "GeoGuesser" to my Steam library.
It was always a game that I had some interest in, but the web version required a subscription to play, and as many of you here might know,
that's not something I enjoy. So when I saw it was entered early
access on Steam today, I quite excitedly clicked 'add to cart'; while
I've no interest in paying for a subs, it's a game I'd happily buy.
Except, much to my shock, it was a free-to-play game... which required
a subscription if you wanted to play more than ten rounds (that's ten
rounds total, btw; not ten rounds every day or every week or every
year. You get the game and if you ever want to play an eleventh round,
you're paying a monthly subs). In other words, it's a subscription
game with a (very short) free trial.
And so I did something I almost never do; I /removed/ a game from my library. I don't know if you understand how damning this is; I have
some of the worst games in my library, but I don't get rid of them,
just because that would make The Number go down. But for a business
plan this slimy, The Number can go hang.
(Although, I did buy another, better game to keep The Number happy.
;-)
