You may recall that about a year ago, a port of the mobile-only "Doom
RPG" was made available to the public. Well, now you can play the
second game of the series - the aptly-named "Doom II RPG" - on PC as
well.*
I always had a soft-spot for the "Doom RPG" games; they were
surprisingly good considering the limitations of the hardware. In
terms of gameplay, they're not very Doom-y, of course; although the
games utilize a stripped-down port of the Idtech-1 engine, the
low-power processors of flip-phones couldn't handle the
smooth-scrolling movement necessary for an FPS. So it's all tile-based movement and turn-based combat. Still, the games struck a nice balance between seriousness and tongue-in-cheek, and the mechanics worked well
enough for a game designed to be played in five-minute bites.
"Doom II RPG" was the bigger brother of the series, offering larger
maps, more variety in activities, and three different characters to
play as. It also featured cutscenes (rendered in-engine, so don't get
too excited). Nonetheless, it doesn't stray too far from the formula
of the original, so if you didn't like the original, this sequel isn't
going to do much for you either.
"Doom II RPG" was made available on a number of platforms, including
the Apple iPhone/iPad line. Sadly, the game is not compatible with
newer versions of iOS, and isn't available for sale anymore, so
acquiring the game assets legally might be a challenge. I still have
"Doom II RPG" installed on one of my older iPads, though, so I'm good.
;-)
Now we just need the "Wolfenstein 3D RPG" to complete the set!
