• "Missing" storage on Time Machine disk

From Connor Shannon@21:1/5 to All on Sat Jan 28 21:31:27 2023
Hi I have a couple of portable drives that I use for Time Machine backups I move them from one computer to another.

One of the drives couldn't back up b'cuz there wasn't enough room only 40GB, I realized that it had my old macBook backups that I didn't need any more b'cuz everything got move to my new MacBook a few months ago. So I deleted all the old MB backups (over
    1.8M files!!!). It took hours.

Anyway, now there are only two folders on the backup one for the new Macbook and one for my big Mac. The backup drive says they take 380GB total when I look at the drive in Finder. But when I look at GetInfo it says the drive has 580GB with only 220GB
left out of 800GB. But there should be 420GB free. I ran DiskUtility and it took a long time but said the disk was fine. I thought maybe it still thought a lot of the old files were on it (bad file system). So I don't know why GetInfo thinks theres only
220GB available how do I make it know there's 420GB?

Did you "empty" the trash with that drive mounted?

I thought of that but the trash can didn't have anything in it. When I said to delete the backup the Mac asked if I wanted to immediately delete it and I said yes, so it never went into the trash can.

will they be able to tell me if the disk THINKS there's more stuff than there really is? The backups folder has two folders and they add up to what the Backups folder says which is less than 200GB. It's just GetInfo that says the disk is using 580GB. it
still seems like a problem with the disk seeing files that were deleted, like some file list didn't get updated.

I think so but to make sure I just did it again. Same problem. Also i took the drive to my other Mac and it still says 193GB in Finder and 581GB in GetInfo, So it isn't a problem with the Macbook its the drive.

I mean, if GetInfo is wrong and my Macs know there's really more space on the drive then GetInfo says, then that's fine. I just don't know which number the Macs think is right. If they believe Get Info then I'll get error msgs when there's really still
    room.

Thank you I will try that tomorrow meanwhile I did "calculate sizes" on the other portable disk and it does the same thing! Finder says it has 353GB but GetInfo says it has 755GB. :(

I even looked up how to see hidden files in Finder but there was only about 1GB and its already in the 353GB so that doesn't explain it.

I got a new Macbook a few months ago did Apple change their file systems and maybe that confused the TM disks?

Thank you I will try that tomorrow meanwhile I did "calculate sizes" on the other portable disk and it does the same thing! Finder says it has 353GB but GetInfo says it has 755GB. :(

I even looked up how to see hidden files in Finder but there was only about 1GB and its already in the 353GB so that doesn't explain it.

I got a new Macbook a few months ago did Apple change their file systems and maybe that confused the TM disks?

p.s. Both of the disks have other partitions and GetInfo and Finder agree how much space those use its just the TM partitions that are confused.

maybe it still thought a lot of the old files were on it (bad
file system). So I don't know why GetInfo thinks theres only
220GB available how do I make it know there's 420GB?

Did you "empty" the trash with that drive mounted?

I thought of that but the trash can didn't have anything in it.
When I said to delete the backup the Mac asked if I wanted to
immediately delete it and I said yes, so it never went into the
    trash can.

Have you tried using a disk usage analyzer utility like DaisyDisk or >> GrandPerspective to see where the space is used?

No I've never heard of those. Can't disk utility tell me? If not I will look for those.
Both of them will show where space is used on the volume. Download one of them and take a look. GrandPerspective is free.

Okay I ran Grand Perspective on one of the portable drives. The TM partition is 1.5TB and the Backups folder only says 353 GB but Get Info says that 756TB is used. Grand Perspective mostly just has a bunch of colored boxes but I found a Info icon and it
says "Size of scanned files 310GB Miscellenaous used space 392GB." So maybe that 392GB is whats making GetInfo think the disk doesn't have as much free space??

I found this in GP help but I still don't know if that's what's making Get Info confused:

Miscellaneous used space: All used space that is not accounted for by the size of the scanned files. This includes the following:
Files that were not scanned, either because the scanned folder was not at the root of the volume, or the user did not have permissions to access all subfolders.
Files that are excluded by the filter (if any).
Disk space that is not accounted for because the Logical file size measure is used, which underestimates the space that files actually take up.
Low-level file system data, needed to store amongst others the folder hierarchy.

Does any body know if Time Machine goes by what Finder says or what Get Info says? If Get Info doesn't matter then I'll stop worrying about it being wrong. Thank you.

Opened everything I could think of to look at how my TM volumes (on 2
    external drives) "look" storage/availability wise.

All of them report the same as command line does (df or df -h)[1]
(To be sure, many of the utilities use "df" internally one way or
another); all of them report the same as disk utility (app) (same reason).

Also consistent with Finder "available" report ('cause it all comes from
    the same place).

One 6TB drive (with TM and other files) has a negligible 30MB of
    "purgeable" space on it.

[1] careful of units, whether Ti/Gi (1024 base) or in 512 byte block counts.

Thank you Alan not sure I want to mess around with terminal.

What do you think of my idea that Time Machine got confused when I got a new Mac b'cuz some of the backups are from an older file system?

I guess I'll just keep going and hope that Finder is right about how much space there is.

Thank you Alan not sure I want to mess around with terminal.

This is a passive use of terminal - you enter a very simple command:

    df

    or

    df -h

and it writes out a report for the mounted drives.

What do you think of my idea that Time Machine got confused when I got a new Mac b'cuz some of the backups are from an older file system?

Not a bad question - I have no answer for you though. Maybe at Apple discussions... ?

I guess I'll just keep going and hope that Finder is right about how much space there is.

It is probably right ... and probably will reflect what the df command
above shows (multiply the numbers by 512 to get bytes).
