I have a 2018 27inch iMac.

I surf, check emails and play the odd Apple Arcade game, so not high
powered use!

Its specs are as follows

4.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
Radeon Pro 580 8 GB
64 GB 2400 MHz DDR4

I fancy a change and there are no M1/M2 27ich iMacs at the moment.

So what do I change to?


Will there be an M1/M2 27 inch in the near future??

I think the 24 inch iMac will be a much smaller screen than I am used to
and I think even the top end 24 inch iMac will be not much different
than my current set up.

So do I go for a Mac Mini with 10-Core CPU 16-Core GPU 26GB Unified Memory?

My iMac is 27", 2012 model, i7 quad/HT with 24 GB of RAM.

I do more than you seem to do with yours (though not arcade games and if
there is a weak point here, it is the graphics capability).

I would happily go to a 24" model as I have other screens lying around
to make a double or triple setup as needs (wants) may be. I don't find
that I "use" the 27" to its fullness in any case.

I haven't upgraded yet as I'm waiting for the next iMac which will be M2
or M3 depending on which rumour you fancy most. That might not appear
until the fall - esp. if it is an M3.

Same rumour mills point to a 27" version as well.

The Mac Mini M2 rolled out a couple weeks ago. It has a pretty strong
spec, esp. the higher end models - where you also get more ports. Very tempting.

So, I'm standing pat for now to see what the next iMac model will bring.
Once it's announced I'll pour over the spec's of the various models
and choose. I will certainly order whatever I choose on day 0.

i can’t live with a 24” monitor

so i got a 2020 iMac 27” and i’m quite happy with it

I was hankering for some new silicon to move beyond my 2019 21.5" 1-TB
Fusion Drive iMac. So I sprung for a 512 M2 Mac mini at Costco and an
on-sale 27" 4k Samsung monitor at another store and connected them by
HDMI. Though I kept the Magic Mouse 2 and Magic KB from the iMac, I was
still needing to add better speakers better than the vintage beige Dell
pair I pulled out of the closet to temporarily hook up-- plus a
webcam/mic combo.

You can use your iPhone as a webcam for the mini if it comes to that.

To make a long story short, I was disappointed in the new mini's overall performance. Though seek times were certainy quicker from the SSD,
overall proicessing didn't seem all that much faster than my iMac for my day-to-day casual and not very demanding computer use.

You'd need to do some intense task to tell ... such as a Handbrake
conversion of a video, to get a good measure of it...

And while the large sharp screen was quite nice-- I couldn't adjust
monitor brightness using the F1 and F2 keys, the monitor lagged coming
on from wake up, and making common monitor adjustments involved an
auto-popup 6 line menu requiring a two-finger chicken dance with the
five buttons mounted under the front edge of the screen to change
anything. I tried a higher end monitor-- still no joy.

Sounds like my work Mini (intel) experience ... which is worse as it's
two smaller monitors and sometime one won't come on at all w/o some
dancing around...

Your experience kind of suggests to me that an iMac is probably what I
really want to replace this one.

general. I can say the 27" Apple Studio display is excellent in this
regard - it puts the LG UltraFine 4K display to shame in terms of image
and audio quality. I have them sitting side by side on my desk and the difference is stark. Plus it has a good integrated camera and behaves as
you expect an Apple monitor to behave with regard to overall usability
and display controls.

Yeah, the camera is a camera, but that's about all you can say about its quality, but it works well enough even in low light, and Center Stage is
nice. The other aspects of the display are what put it above competing
5K displays.

The discontinuation of the 27" iMac has revived the market for external displays with Mac suitable pixel density.

Does Apple want to blow that up?

Yes, I will say it's perfectly sufficient for video calls. It's just
impressive in terms of resolution or quality compared to higher-end
cameras.

And you can always use a better camera - including later iPhones.

Yep. I have a 1080p Logitech StreamCam that I used before getting the
Studio display, but the lack of Center Stage and bizarre tendency to
focus on the background rather than the subject make it less than ideal
for me. So, I use the built-in camera instead.

There are definitely alternatives to the Studio display, where you can
mix and match your own display, microphone, speakers, and camera - some cheaper, some more expensive, and of varying quality - if that's your
thing. And that's great - competition is good.

I'm probably in the severe minority but I don't like huge screens
myself. One of the reasons I have an old A1225 20", even if it does max
out with El Capitan. And even 20" seemed like overkill after all the
years I spent staring at Apple's smaller CRT monitors.

Two weeks ago I switched from my 15" MBA from 2019 to the new mini M2pro
with a 4K 27" Dell screen because I wanted a more eye-friendly solution
for my hour long stints at the computer. Does as expected.

In addition I love the feeling of solution that allows a lot of windows

can watch TV during my computer work (CNN,BBC, n-tv and BFM).

The Intel-MBA is still a high-end laptop but it has physical limitations
that cannot be overcome. These changes are due to the fact that I
retired a while ago.

Depends on use case. I have a 27" iMac and spend 95% of my time on the
left 80% (it sits off centre on my desk because I have a 20" side
monitor). So I've relegated some "info" apps to the right side (Notes, reminders and so on). The side monitor for things like e-mail and
other secondary utilities.

For graphics work or when working cross app (Word + Excel both open
while working), then the large screen is very useful.

That said, if the new iMac (M2|M3) is only available in 24" I'll be fine
with it. OTOH, if it's 27", then I'll move a 27" Samsung monitor onto
the desk to be the side monitor.

I have a 5K Apple Studio display sitting next to a 4K LG UltraFine
display and still find myself wanting more real estate. The Studio
display is my main display and the LG display is secondary. I mostly use
the secondary display for long-running things that I need to monitor
like my security cameras, remote screen sharing sessions, and so on. On
my main display, I typically have 3-4 virtual desktops running in
Mission Control dedicated to software development, HD video editing and encoding, monitoring various servers, and so on.
