There are controls on the screen to play, fast Forward and reverse but

Bluetooth turned on screen mirroring, nothing helps. Do you have any
idea what I'm doing wrong?  Could something in my MacBook pro be
preventing it from sending a picture to this external screen?

It's almost certainly the TV that is malfunctioning.

I have very strong indications that Amanda is Arlen in real life.
    He is always totally confused.

A lot of detail missing here.

What is the "link"? Wired? How? Wireless? How?

    What Macbook is it (year)

What OS version on the Macbook

This is a 2019 MBP running 13.6.7 and thre link is BT.  When I
establish the link, the screen on  the TV switches from the channel I
was watching to this curious black screen with the line of dots, the
input identification, the MBP identification and those non-working
    controls.

Is the TV networked (wired (Ethernet) or WiFi) to the same network as
    the laptop?

This is how the higher bandwidth video gets to the TV. Not over BT.

BT does do the "connection management" and perhaps some controls - but
the video and audio go over the network (WiFi or Ethernet).

Seems to me that (if it does) you want an HDMI-to-HDMI
    connection.

Seems to me that (if it does) you want an HDMI-to-HDMI connection.

With most MBP's and many television brands you can do a wireless connection.

Well I wont say it wasn't a good idea to try making sure both the TV and
the macbook are on the same network,'cos it was a good idea.

But despite that, it didn't make any difference to the largely black identification screen

I didn't ask: are you using "AirPlay" to send video to your television?

    Did you restart your MBP?
    Did you restart your television?
Did you try to "Air Play" to the TV from the Mac or from an iPhone/iPad?

Otherwise: Go ask Samsung - perhaps your particular television is not compatible.
