Hello Drew!

For various reasons it could be convenient if the Debian default
mpi on these architectures could be updated from mpich to openmpi.

The specific reason that bothers me is that mpich does not provide mpi-fort.pc, while openmpi does. This prevents mumps from building on
m68k and sh4 (with blacs-mpi also affected).

When asking such questions, you should actually put the people responsible
for the ports in the loop, otherwise you won't get a qualified answer.

As for the question itself, I will have to look into the proposed change
first and check the possible ramifications. I won't to avoid breakage
because it's usually me who gets to fix it :).
