    Have you actually checked the changes at the translation level? This is basically three changes to match actual timezone changes:
    - Truk => Chuuk
    - Godthab => Nuuk
    - Enderbury => Kanton

    In the case of Truk and Godthab, I manually fixed the translation that
    were already translating Truk as Chuuk and Godthab as Nuuk.

    Also please note that all the Cyprus changes were already shipped in
    tzsetup templates, just not offered in the po files, as all the previous uploaders never committed the po changes from the automatically
    generated templates...

    I am fine reverting the 3 changes above. But at the end is do we want to provide correct translation of the wrong timezone or the correct
    untranslated timezone.

    Regards
    Aurelien

    Only now.
    But that's not that important anyway.
    AFAICS all translations now show the "This translation is not
    complete, do you want
    to proceed?" warning (or similar; don't have the exact text at hand).
    It doesn't matter, if there's only three or twenty new strings, we are dropped
    from 25 fully translated to 0 now.

    Ok, I wasn't aware of that.

    - Truk => Chuuk
    - Godthab => Nuuk
    - Enderbury => Kanton

    In the case of Truk and Godthab, I manually fixed the translation that
    were already translating Truk as Chuuk and Godthab as Nuuk.

    I think this will not work, when you add the translations into
    the po files directly in the package.
    Translations have to be put into the po files in the "d-i" repo (sublevelX/<lang>.po).
    d-i packages are different compared to "normal" packages.

    And I wasn't aware of that either.

    Also please note that all the Cyprus changes were already shipped in >tzsetup templates, just not offered in the po files, as all the previous >uploaders never committed the po changes from the automatically
    generated templates...

    I don't get your point here...

    I mean that the templates are automatically generated by gen-templates.
    That script was issuing a:

    warning: autogenerated template for CY should be manually reviewed
    warning: autogenerated template for CY should be manually reviewed

    At the end it means that the templates file in the tzsetup-udeb package contains the Cyprus strings untranslated, and not visible from the
    translators.

    I only reviewed the changes and made them available for translators.

    I am fine reverting the 3 changes above. But at the end is do we want to >provide correct translation of the wrong timezone or the correct >untranslated timezone.

    We could indeed have both - if there was more time until the release...

    I saw this already frequently with previous releases: when the freeze
    is in sight, development work starts for d-i.

    Well in my case, I got pointed about #1055541 from someone testing the
    Alpha 1 release. This bug might even needs to get its severity
    increased. For some countries like USA and Mexico, selecting a timezone
    doesn't work, it always ends up into Etc/UTC.

    And then I just got attracted by the warnings...

    Anyway, we will see, how that goes.
    Before the next alpha/beta, I will insert the English text into the translated strings as well, at least for the above mentioned languages,
    when translators don't act until then.

    At least for Chuuk and Nuuk, it's very likely the correct translation
    for languages with latin characters.

    Regards
    Aurelien

    Can be translated for Forky later on. That's the best I can do.

    Geographically West Asia (maybe) but practically with two European and one European/Asian nations occupying it. One island part is part of the
    EU, the other is not internationally recognised. Part of the EBU.

    This is without considering the disputed status of the TRNC

    More Europe than Asia, potentially - Turkey can claim to be both European
    and Asian.

    The EU considers the entire island to be part of the EU.

    Not sure which tectonic plate it sits on :)

    CIA World Fact book is not helpful:

    Middle East, island in the Mediterranean Sea, south of Turkey; note - Cyprus views itself as part of Europe; geopolitically, it can be classified as
    falling within Europe, the Middle East, or both

    Cyprus is a country located in Western Asia, according to Wikipedia [1].

    So, yeah, it should not be listed under Europe.

    Adrian

    [1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyprus

    According to the same source, "Although it is geographically located in
    West Asia, its cultural identity and geopolitical make-up are
    overwhelmingly Southeast European."

    So I suspect most Cyprus inhabitants expect to see it under Europe.
    What is more important, geographical accuracy or users expectations ?

    Naive question: is it possible to show it under both regions ?

    * Update cities/zones that have been renamed.
    * Add templates for Cyprus.

    Tests have shown, that Cyprus as country is only visible, when looking under
    Europe as continent.
    Is this correct, since the timezone strings are named "Asia/... " ?

    Asia/Nicosia (most of Cyprus)
    Asia/Famagusta (Northern Cyprus)

    Looks inconsistent to me.
    [...]

    It seems to be a discrepancy between upstream tzdata which, consider Cyprus in Asia, and localechooser, which considers Cyprus in Europe:

    https://salsa.debian.org/installer-team/localechooser/-/blob/master/regionmap?ref_type=heads#L167

    I see. But since we did not receive any complaints in the past about mapping Cyprus to Europe, that's likely ok.

    The real issue seems to be, that the displayed choices include the continent
    as
    Asia/Nicosia (most of Cyprus)
    Asia/Famagusta (Northern Cyprus)

    This is not the case for any other timezone. It should be

    Nicosia (most of Cyprus)
    Famagusta (Northern Cyprus)

    Then the discrepancy from above is no longer an issue (for the user in d-i).

    Moreover, this message is lacking the declaration of the sublevel,
    that's why the above strings are in sublevel1, while all others from
    tzsetup are in sublevel3.

    I have attached a patch to fix all the above.

    Oh, thanks for the explanations, I understand better your concerns now.

    You are indeed correct. It seems nobody realized, as it's already like
    that in bookworm... Maybe we should update gen-templates to not output
    the continent for automatically generated timezones.

    Moreover, this message is lacking the declaration of the sublevel,
    that's why the above strings are in sublevel1, while all others from
    tzsetup are in sublevel3.

    Thanks for the details, I wasn't aware of the meaning of that :sl3:.
    Again we might want to adjust gen-templates to avoid such future mistake
    if a new timezone is added.

    I have attached a patch to fix all the above.

    Thanks, that looks good. Don't hesitate to tell me if you want me to
    commit it and do the upload.

    Just a note that the time zone identifiers in tzdata are not considered
    to reflect the geographic location of any place that uses them, only
    that they have used that set of time zone rules since at least
    1970-01-01. This leads to some seemingly odd settings like the recent
    example of a place in Australia that uses Asia/Tokyo TZID, which caused
    some confusion.

    https://lists.iana.org/hyperkitty/list/tz@iana.org/message/CYHSTYUEUTME24TK3AWT5QVPNE5C4LW6/

    It is not a goal of IANA's TZ database that TZIDs reflect the actual
    geographic location of anything that uses them, so discrepancies are inevitable. They consider it down to the user interface of the device to present something that a user can point to on a map or select from a
    location list, etc.

    Thanks,
    Andy
