• Bug#1099987: UI freezing

    Package: gnome-shell
    Version: 48~rc-2

Since I installed gnome-shell 48~rc-2, the UI keeps freezing. This
happens multiple times per hour during regular use. The whole display
including cursor and clock are frozen.

Audio playback is continuing during the freeze. Capslock LED is still
reacting to capslock keystrokes. Bluetooth headphones can be used to
    pause and continue playback.

After suspend (closing and opening the lid), the freeze is gone.
Sometimes the app switcher (Alt+Tab) is showing “on top” of the lock
    screen after suspend and resume.

Unfortunately, I was not able do identify a root cause yet. I cannot
link it to any specific activity (e.g. 3D rendering). It happens during
normal usage with Nautilus, Terminal, Firefox and Evolution.

journalctl (user or root) and dmesg do not show many messages that give
a hint. I suspect the issue being related to gnome-shell because I did
not update any kernel or video related packages recently. I updated
various other Gnome 48 packages at the same time, but nothing else.

    CPU: 13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1370P
Graphics: Intel Corporation Raptor Lake-P [Iris Xe Graphics] (rev 04)

    Stephan

If it's the same thing I'm seeing (seems likely), VT switching
(Ctrl+Alt+F6 Ctrl+Alt+F2) also seems to be a workaround.

I'm also wondering whether this is related to an issue my partner has
been seeing occasionally on bookworm, where the UI sometimes freezes
(but much more rarely than we're seeing in unstable) and, again, can be
unstuck by VT switching. If it's the same thing, then having it happen
more often in unstable is actually a good thing, because it means the harder-to-reproduce version in bookworm might finally get resolved in
    trixie.

It appears to be the same bug as 1099743. Sorry for duplicate.

Please try the version of libmutter-16-0 (and other packages from
src:mutter) from experimental? It includes an upstream merge request
(not reviewed by upstream yet) which I'm hoping will resolve the issue.

It's difficult to say for sure "this is fixed" when it's an intermittent
issue that can happen after a few minutes or a few hours, so feedback is
useful here (especially since the possible solution is a change that has
not yet been reviewed or merged upstream).
