    Hi Michael,

The issue is that restrictions on redistribution can be difficult under
the Debian Free Software Guidelines: https://wiki.debian.org/DebianFreeSoftwareGuidelines so you were asked
to change the licence to allow commercial use but with source attribution
as far as I read the above. It looks as if you've done that, above.

For anyone else reading this who is unsure: As the originator, you are, of course, free to put out software under any licence that you choose but restrictions that you impose may make the software not distributable by
others apart from you and, especially, not by Debian under Debian
    guidelines.

All the very best, as ever,

    Andrew Cater

Is the last paragraph even necessary?

I will make a new release available shortly.
I plan to include a small technical change.

    Hi,

    Please CC to me.

I'm doing ITA dkopp #987089 [1], when I update to new upstream
    version upstream/8.1,
I find copyright has some changes:

    https://salsa.debian.org/debian/dkopp/-/blob/master/doc/copyright?ref_type=heads#L12

    It say:

All other data and image files included in the source distribution:
Creative Commons Attribution Non Commercial Share Alike 3.0 Unported
    https://creativecommons.org/licenses

CC-BY-NC-SA-3.0 is not obey DFSG[2], right?

Right. See https://wiki.debian.org/DFSGLicenses and especially https://wiki.debian.org/DFSGLicenses#Licenses_that_are_DFSG-incompatible
    Yes.

This software is a GUI, if not pictures included, it will not use.

    Suggestions is welcome!

Reach out to upstream, explain the situation to them, and suggest they switch from CC-BY-NC-SA-3.0 to CC-BY-SA-3.0 or CC-BY-NC-SA-4.0.

    Sven
Thanks your suggestions, I'll try it.

There was an email earlier in the Debian conversation that suggested CC-BY-NC-SA-4.0, but I think that was a typo and they meant CC-BY-
SA-4.0. The difference is whether or not someone can use these images
    for commercial purposes.

One of the purposes of Debian is to create a Linux distribution than
can be used and modified by individuals and businesses for both
commercial and non-commercial purposes. You can read a little about
    this philosophy at:

    https://wiki.debian.org/DebianFreeSoftwareGuidelines

Is the last paragraph even necessary?

If you own the copyright for all of these images and can change the
licensing, you can choose to license them all under the GPLv3+ just
like the code. In my personal opinion for projects where I am an
upstream developer, this is the preferred option for images that are
used as part of the GUI (which is my understanding about these images
    from the conversation).

If you prefer a different license for the images for some reason, you
could license them under a suitable CC license, like the CC-BY-SA-4.0,
which is compatible with the GPL.

    https://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.en.html#CC0

I will make a new release available shortly.
I plan to include a small technical change.

Thank you for being so accommodating. We enjoy working with upstream developers to provide the best experience to our users.

I fully agree with this recommendation.
I really hope Michael will follow it and license all those images and
data files under the same terms as the program.
