    You can search for:
    - PhoNews
    - Piao Hong
    - Groundhog

But expect some unmaintained and/or broken piece of software.

slrn? do you have a shell account somewhere? or an always on device? (a
linux based nas, or a RPi). put a ssh client on your phone... i suggest
using screen when you connect, it circumvents several issues you might
    have.

Install Termux from Fdroid, compile and run newsreader of choice. Or
maybe it's already in the Termux package repos.

I compiled trn4 from source on my phone, and the hardest part was sh is
not in /bin/, so lots of build scripts needed fixing.

But, much as I love trn, it's old and has UTF-8 issues unless you work
really hard. I did it as proof-of-concept rather than to actually use regularly.

OTOH, trn works really well for reading news in terminals that are
narrower than 80 columns or otherwise quirky. I find myself able to cope
with Usenet in 57x15 on a 3" diagonal screen where half the display
(hence that "15") is lost to the keyboard.

That's basically my method. ssh from Termux to shell host with trn. But
I find tmux much better than screen.

Was open-source also one of your conditions?

actually i connect from ios, don't know much about ssh clients on
android. i saw JuiceSSH, seems nice, and it features mosh compatibility,
    and mosh is way cool

Termux is a complete Linux shell. Busybox or bash. Compilers like gcc,
flex, bison, interpreters like python, ruby, perl. You can run ssh just
    fine from Termux.

You can run tmux on Termux, ssh to somewhere else in one of the
terminals, and then run tmux again at the far end. (But you may not
want to run it locally. Termux can run multiple sessions on it's own.)

I gather people with Android tablets run X11 from Termux. I have not
    tried that.

sounds amazing, but no way i can get anything even close without
jailbraking... it doesn't seem to support mosh though, but maybe that's
no biggie when you can compile/run so much locally.

how does it handle going on the bg while on a ssh session? my former
apps on iphone would all lose connection.

This varies device to device with how much control over background usage
is allowed. The aptly named "Don't Kill My App" website at dontkillmyapp.com has device by device ratings and directions for disabling background app killing.

My current device is a two thumbs down one, with terrible out-of-the-box settings (very aggressive app killing) but easy access to change those
    settings (which I have done).

So know ssh sessions are at the whims of network connectivity instead of
app foreground / background actions. Switching from cellular to wifi or
back will drop the connections, since the phone doesn't keep both going
    at once.

comp.mobile.android or XDA forums (forum.xda-developers.com) is probably
    better for more detailed answers.

people at XDA know a lot, but don't answer much, c.m.a is the opposite

oh boy, i know that. that's where mosh enters: i seemlessly pass from
wi-fi to 5g and back without losing connection. that works on pcs too:
my linux terminal is instantly resumed with its ssh connection on when
    exiting windows' sleep state

I often have unstable net connection and mosh is a lifesaver. Before
mosh I used autossh; it would reconnect but take longer and not give
    the visual feedback.
