I would expect most people of his age don't care that much what other
people think of them. Though with Chevy I think he's always been that
way.

The outcry against Chase isn't because he's a jerk. Its because he's apparently a raving fanatical racist in the best tradition of
Confederate slave owners.

He speaks his mind because he can get away with it. In all paranoia
there is a kernel of truth; in all racism, there is a self-righteous intolerance.
If I told you what I think, you would call me a racist even though I
lived with and almost married a Black woman with her two children in
the early 1980s. She was among the best of the best and not the worst
of the worst. Black and White and Red all over.

The truth about Chase is that he'd desperately like to work again but
no one will hire him. Abusive and bitter right to the end, he has
torched every bridge in the business and bitten every hand that has
reached out save him from his misanthropic self. So Chevy doesn't care
what people think about him? Not to worry, because people long ago
stopped thinking about Chevy Chase at all.
