Just finished a biography on this woman..what a tortured soul she was. I had known about her tuberculosis and mental problems, but had been unaware of what
a depressing, upsetting life she lived.
On the flip side she was a brilliant actress, both on stage and on screen, although she never felt that she matched her husband, Lawrence Olivier's technical skill. I loved her in The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone and Dark Journey, as well as Gone With the Wind, of course.
Her characterization of Blanche Du Bois in A Streetcar Named Desire, while brilliant, is way too painful for my personal taste. Especially after reading that it was this role (both on stage and on screen) that contributed greatly to
her own mental deterioration. It was to her credit that she was able to remain
active and a star for so long while suffering with her mental disorders
