• GWTW, Andrew Sarris, and audiences from the 1940s-1950s

OK, this MAY not shock that many people here, but I was taken a bit aback.

(I stumbled on it when I was searching for reviews of "Festival" (1967), of all things!)

Good thing the late Andrew Sarris had some modern sense, by the late 1960s...you can tell from his terminology.

I'm referring, of course, to "that" scene, which gets discussed first.

    SPOILER

I realize that many would argue that, when you watch the scene, Scarlett, suspiciously, isn't really fighting that much - and certainly not screaming or even yelling "NO!"

But in the book at least - and maybe the movie too, but I can't remember - she makes it clear, BEFOREHAND, that she does NOT want to sleep with him anymore, since she doesn't want any more babies to ruin her waistline - among other things, of course.

So her "happiness," in both the book and movie, doesn't make a lot of sense. It's no wonder modern audiences - even teen audiences? - don't laugh anymore.
