What was the reaction in Japan to Overlord?

Yes there are ones with a demon/devil as a core character but they are very curtailed in what they do. Not here.

could be seen as a result of such a realization by the series writer.

He kidnaps huge numbers for slave labor. He rewards various subordinates with humans,
and it's very clear what happens to them.
We clearly have different definitions of evil.

It may look like it, but it is very unlikely that it will apply to
everyday life and personal behavior. It is probably different when
assessing long-term societal issues. Evolution doesn't work according
to "love is all you need" from my point of view.
