• The virtuoso jazz Clarinet of Johnny Dodds

Just happens to be from Louis Armstrong's first recording session, as
a player in King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band, in Richmond, Indiana on
April 5, 1923. But the focus here is on Johnny Dodds.

"Canal Street Blues" [Gennett 5133] composed by Oliver and Armstrong https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2wM-d-2QOI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2QEBshAQ68

    Oliver, Joe "King" (Cornet, Leader)
    Armstrong, Louis (2nd Cornet)
    Dutrey, Honore (Trombone)
Dodds, Johnny (Clarinet) - solo at 1:23, but clearly heard throughout
Hardin, Lil (Piano, Arranger) - soon to become Armstrong's 2nd wife
    Scott, Bud (Banjo)
Dodds, Baby (Drums, Woodblocks) - Johnny's younger brother, another
    jazz legend

an informative review of this highly regarded recording, and of the
band, and a mention of their main Chicago jazz scene venue: https://www.loc.gov/static/programs/national-recording-preservation-board/documents/CanalStreetBlues.pdf
"Especially noteworthy is the insouciant and flowing
counter melody played on the clarinet by Johnny Dodds."

Joe "King" Oliver's dance band was the best and most influential hot
jazz band in Chicago in the early 1920s, at a time when Chicago was
    the center of jazz.

Johnny Dodds and Lil Hardin would play alongside Louis Armstrong
    for many years to come.

Johnny Dodds was the premier clarinetist of his era and has been
described as "a prime architect in the creation of the Jazz Age." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Dodds

1972 recording of "Canal Street Blues" by Ken Colyer's Allstars at the
'Dancing Slipper' in Nottingham, UK: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RrOizqRFrI great flapper era video

Another early, and highly acclaimed, jazz clarinetist was Omer Simeon.
He joined King Oliver's band in 1927. ISTR seeing one of his clarinets
at the New Orleans Jazz Museum 20 years ago.
