Bruce said he could post through Google but it would not let him start a conversation. I am testing if that is true for me as well.

I still listen to Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Ike Turner despite their sins.

I did the same thing last week. It's something with Bruce's computer. Restarting it, using a different browser, signing out and back in, none
    of that worked.

I can't post at all on my main computer, only on this old laptop, and I can start a thread on the laptop. The robot thing does not work correctly on the main computer. Instead of center screen the robot message comes up in the top left corner, and when I
    tick the box, nothing happens.

It says to shut down any processes from the provider that are still running after the provider is closed. There were lots of processes running, but nothing that was part of chrome.

There are other suggestions that come up in the search, such as:

    In Chrome:
Click on the three dots in the top right corner of the window.
    Select "Clear browsing data".
In the "Clear browsing data" window, select the "Cookies and other
site data" and "Cached images and files" checkboxes.
Select the time range that you want to clear data for.
Click on the "Clear data" button.

I had to look up what a VPN was, and I certainly don't have that.

I tried a couple things that came up in searches that are supposed to bypass captcha, but nothing has worked so far. One of them charges 3 cents for each time that it bypasses a captcha screen, but it didn't work.

Sometimes you also get the 9 boxes where you have to click on the ones that have a car, or a traffic light, or something in them.

    FYI

C.A.P.T.C.H.A. was created at Carnegie Mellon University in 2000 to
protect computer users from spammers. The program was so successful
that Google wound up purchasing it and still owns it today.
The name stands for: Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell
    Computers and Humans Apart.

Computers/Robots in effect means *perceived* automated scripts,
which can slow down Internet servers to the detriment of users.

This program is invoked if *your computer's Internet IP address* is
associated with significant spam and/or hacking bots, and/or any other *robot-like behavior* (which could include someone making too many
Newsgroup posts, or Google searches, in a short span of time :-)

The program protects web sites from abuse, so you, the innocent
computer user, don’t have to compete with "others" trying to make
    access for unethical reasons.

Bruce, from what I've read, if not already you could try logging into
a Google account before accessing Google Groups.

Sorry to be negative, but this so-called IT tech might end up advising
you to reset your PC from scratch (like as when you first bought it).
(I apologize if below I'm stating the obvious)
If you have few non-Microsoft apps on it, and you have a backup of
personal files (docs, images, mp3s, etc) than I guess this wouldn't
be too big a problem. If no backup, and assuming the PC will boot up eventually, you can then backup personal files to an external drive
    before reset.

Update: I tried posting to Google Groups from my laptop. It also runs Windows 10, but I was not able to start a thread or even to reply to one. I got the same problem Bruce is having, captcha box appearing in the upper lefthand corner and then stalling after I check the box.

So I think now that this is a Google problem.

If you remember, a while ago (last year, maybe?) no one was able to start a new thread in Google Groups. We all wrote complaints to Google which were ignored, until finally they fixed it.

    Do you guys agree?

I can post fine through Google on the Windows XP laptop, so it can't just be a straight Google problem.
Likewise I am currently posting fine to to the group via Google Groups in both new thread posts and in responses to existing threads with no problems.

Yes,I get the CAPCHA thing up every time (in mid-screen) on both sets of posts but when I get Robby here to tick the "I AM NOT A ROBOT" box it all goes through smoothly and all is well

Forgot to add using Chrome in Windows 10

    ------------
Okay, but what I'm saying is that everything is fine when I use my
"regular" (desktop) computer, but when I tried it on my laptop, also
using Windows 10 and Chrome, plugged into the same router, I could not
    post.

And when I suggested to Bruce that he try using Microsoft Edge instead
of Chrome, he got the same result. So it can't be a Chrome issue.

It *is* likely a Google problem, but it's clear that settings on/for a particular device (desktop/laptop/...) are also currently a factor in
starting a Conversation in Google Groups.

This is a post concerning Intuit (apps: TurboTax, QuickBooks, Mint,
Credit Karma and Mailchimp) rather than Google Groups, but the
offered solutions for CAPTCHA *might* still be useful in the meantime: https://proconnect.intuit.com/support/en-us/help-article/multi-factor-authentication/resolving-robot-captcha-message/L5PzXBApR_US_en_US
