Here's how the boys did with this one in the 1952 Battle (with a couple of observations made at the
    time :)

    PRELIM
    10 Jesse & Marvin - Dream Girl - Specialty 447
8 Ray Charles - Roll With My Baby - Atlantic 976

    R1
5 Billy Eckstine - Kiss Of Fire - MGM 11225
    13 Jesse & Marvin - Dream Girl - Specialty 447

    R2
    14 Jesse & Marvin - Dream Girl - Specialty 447
    9 Guy Mitchell - Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania - Columbia 39663

    R3
12 Perry Como - Don't Let The Stars Get In Your Eyes - RCA 5064
    13 Jesse & Marvin - Dream Girl - Specialty 447

Diane's "draggy" (I don't see it Di!) Jesse & Marvin comes back from
the dead to take this one (Como was leading here for the past 2 days!)

    R4
    8 Jesse & Marvin - Dream Girl - Specialty 447
    17 Muddy Waters - Country Boy - Chess 1509

Here's the result that makes Diane's day!!!!!! :)

And in the later Dazzling Duets Battle

    R1
    7 Jesse & Marvin -- Dream Girl -- Specialty 447 -- 1952
    3 The Everly Brothers -- Don't Blame Me -- UK Warner Bros 50 -- 1961

    R2
    10 Jesse & Marvin -- Dream Girl -- Specialty 447 -- 1952
    4 Shirley & Lee -- Rockin' With The Clock -- Aladdin 3390 -- 1957

    R3
    9 Jesse & Marvin -- Dream Girl -- Specialty 447 -- 1952
    8 Nino Tempo & April Stevens -- Deep Purple -- Atco 6273 -- 1963

    R4
    6 Jesse & Marvin -- Dream Girl -- Specialty 447 -- 1952
15 The Everly Brothers -- Crying In The Rain -- Warner Bros 5250 -- 1961

    SPONTANEOUS LUNACY VERDICT - 10/10

This classic has long been a high 9 on my list

I concur! That's a terrific record, no matter you look at it.

The song is about a perceived dream girl who played the perceiver
for a fool. A bit strange is that the deceived is played by two
    different singers.

    SPONTANEOUS LUNACY VERDICT - 10/10

This classic has long been a high 9 on my list

Yes, me too, and it's also Earl Lewis' all time favorite record.

Of course it's a remake of this version:

Interesting as an original version but not in same ballpark as the Jess & Marv version

I have it as a 6. What release dates do you have on these? I have Nov on the JB and Dec on the J&M

No, I have 51 on the Belvin and then a re-release in 52 to compete with the Jesse & Marvin.

Page 128 of Galen's 1951 book has a big ad that includes the Belvin Dream Girl as RIH 120. Didn't we discuss this recently, you thought the ad was actually from 1952?

Yes because the ad IS from 1952!! It appears on P.37 in the December 1952 edition and wrongly included in Gart's 1951 book

Both versions are for *hardcore* fans of post-war R&B
    - as are many of the Samp reviewed songs here.

For instance (sticking my neck out :), I doubt Bill, Jim, Steve and
Carl love this 'Dream Girl" the way Bruce, Roger, Diane and Dean do.

Mainstream 65+ whites, I suggest, would *much* prefer, from c.1952,
the brighter sounds of, for example:

Eddie Boyd - Five Long Years
    Ella Fitzgerald - Trying
Little Esther - Aged And Mellow Blues
    Little Walter - Juke
    Red Foley - Midnight
Slim Whitman - Indian Love Call
    The Four Knights - Cry
The Dominoes - Pedal Pushin' Papa
The Four Jacks - Last Of The Good Rockin' Men
The Mel-O-Dots - Just How Long
The Swallows - Roll, Roll, Pretty Baby
