• That's Alright or Blue Moon of Kentucky

From Steve Mc@21:1/5 to All on Wed Mar 27 12:12:27 2024
Both are 10's all day, every day.

But I'd have to give a slight edge to Blue Moon of Kentucky. Perhaps
because I just love that slap bass.

Not sure how it did in the debut contest. I would assume very high.
Though I'm guessing we only voted on one side.

First off, loads of great records are repetitive. I don't see repetition in and of itself as a negative at all. Many times it's a big positive. I see "Too Much" as Presley's most R&B sounding record.

I've never gone overboard on "Too Much". It's just a 7 for me and definitely bottom of the Elvis numbers listed above. There are quite a few more titles in Bruce's list that I'd rate higher than it too

What are the 5 you dislike in the list above?

I agree with you again, but it's not the bass, it's the *song*.  I
love Bill Monroe's waltz-time version too.

And I also agree with you. I do love the song, but that bass just
    fascinates me.

I don't think much of the song, it's the performance that's great, with the bass being the best part of the instrumentation.

I misspoke. It's Elvis' version/performance of the song that is the 10.  Though I do also like Bill Monroe's also, but not in that rarefied air.
And I glad you agree about that bass.

    Speaking of Too Much....

Some years ago, a DJ on Elvis Radio send me some interview clips with
Scotty Moore. One of them has Scotty explaining how he fucked up the
guitar solo on Too Much. If anyone is interested, I could email them the
    clip.

In case anyone's interested, here's a list of my favorite Elvis records
that I made a few years ago for one of Bruce's "list your favorites"
projects. It was worthwhile doing this, I think, because up to that
point I probably would have snarled "I don't have any Elvis favorites."
But it turned out I do. Note that "Too Much" is #27 out of 35.

According to my info, RCA released all the Sun singles in December '55.

Then the remaining Suns such as Blue Moon & Trying To Get To you in  '56.

So I didn't hear the actual Sun's in '56, but did hear the RCA Suns. I
had an older brother who had an extensive record collection, which I now
have, and he allowed me to have full access to that collection.

Elvis' first appearance on record here in the UK was "Heartbreak Hotel" in March 1956.

None of the Sun singles that preceded this in the USA appeared here at that time.

Here is the sequence that the Sun recordings FIRST APPEARED here (sometimes in oddball ways)

Important to note that RCA did not have its own label here until 1957 (distributed by UK Decca).

Previously all US RCA material appeared via EMI's HMV (His Masters Voice) label

Sun recorded titles appear in CAPITAL LETTERS
