• TEN FAVE OBSCURITIES FROM...1952

From Roger@21:1/5 to All on Sat Apr 27 05:35:37 2024
10 more obscurities chosen at random from my favorites lists

    Today......from 1952

Note : I have purposely chosen records that were NOT covered in Samp’s reviews

Little Willie Cotton – Gonna Shook It Up And Go https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwbWztg55Qg

Really good uptempo blues here by Mister Little Willie Cotton about whom little detail seems to be known (tho Mike Leadbitter did write a piece on him in an old “Blues Unlimited” but sadly I don’t have that issue)

On this Swing Time 319 release I have him providing the vocal as well as playing guitar. The label has him backed by the “Al Prince Orchestra” (who also had their own recordings released on Swing Time)

    Arthur “Blues” Crump – I Wonder https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56mlpgUebvY

Decent blues from a moonlighting Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup who adds to his other 1952 jaunts under other names (Elmer James and Percy Lee Crudup) with the Crump moniker here.

Recorded in Jackson Mississippi in 1952 “I Wonder” and “My Baby Boogies All The Time” were released first on Champion 108 (under the Crump name) later that year and again on Johnny Vincent’s Ace label #503---as “Big Boy Crudup”---and on
    78RPM only!---in 1955

Sonny Jones – Is Everything All Right? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEM9YLKDShQ

All I have on this guy is that his real name was Johnny Jones and “Is Everything All Right?” was recorded in New Orleans in 1952 and released on Specialty 443 circa November that year.

Fat Man Matthews & The Four Kittens – Later Baby https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-03uDZ-3dAA

Dave Bartholomew at Imperial was fond of experimenting--mixing artists from different genres together and testing the results. And results didn’t come much better than when he took fledgling r&b singer Allen Matthews and matched him with a little gospel
group Imperial had just signed---The Humming Four

And then putting the mixture thru Cosimo Matassa’s famous studio in New Orleans—and coming up with the solid and insistent “Later Baby” (with Allen now rechristened “Fat Man” and the group “The Four Kittens”)

Later of course both Matthews and the group reinvented themselves once again---this time as “The Hawks”

As usual Unca Marvy tells it best :-

The Mel-O-Tones – One More Time
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98gAqUU4nWY

I have the lineup of this New York City quartet as Earl “Ricky” Wells (lead) Pat Ross,Bobby Wells and Robert Adams.

The catchy “One More Time” was released as Apollo 1192 in the latter half of 1952

Mr Sad Head – Butcher Boy
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26a33cSoGmI

Mr Sad Head was the stage and recording artist name of one William A. “Sunny” Thomas (sometimes that last name is given as “Thurman”)

He was an r&b artist signed to RCA who cut several records for the label. The Wynonie Harris-inspired “Butcher Boy” seems to be his debut on the label (even finally getting a UK single release on Swingin’ label….in 2012!!!)

Sad Head is backed here by Billy Ford (yes, the same Billy Ford of later “Billy & Lillie – La Dee Dah”fame) & His Orchestra. As well as borrowing my Dad’s name Billy was also unfortunate enough to hail from some godforsaken hellhole called
    Bloomfield,NJ

In September 1952 Sad Head toured Texas with Ford & his Orchestra,Shirley Haven and the Charles Brown Trio

    The Serenaders – Misery
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAHoNK7v8_8

It’s a well known fact that some 50’s vocal groups have a convoluted history put there especially to annoy 21st century 50’s r&b music scholars, historians, discographers and fans

But some 50’s vocal groups have an very convoluted history

And some 50’s vocal groups have a history so EXCEEDINGLY mixed up that you start reaching for the headache pills and sometimes even that loaded gun

Luckily in the latter case we can often fall back on the indefatigable Unca Marvy to sort things out for us.As he does below with these Serenaders on Coral (and other labels) and their complicated journey to eventually becoming The Royal Jokers on Atco (
    and other labels)

    The Tilters – Ee-Til-Ya-Dee
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_fqH2w3v8Y

No idea of the personnel of this “one off” group but they are assumed to be New Yorkers and their quite frantic “Ee-Til-Ya-Dee” was cut at Atlantic’s NYC studio on June 29 1952. The flipside “El Cumbanchero” was cut at the same session and
the resulting single was released as Atlantic 979 in December
1952 (two catalog numbers before The Diamonds and “A Beggar For Your Kisses”

Two tracks from the session mentioned—“Gene’s Blues” and “Ad Lib Blues” remain unissued

    John Tripp – Nobody’s Woman
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYLFrgc8Rb8

Not much known on this guy except that (and I’m guessing here.folks) he was almost certainly a West Coaster since as well as the fine “Nobody’s Woman” on Imperial 5190 he also seems to have had a record out on John Dolphin’s Recorded In
Hollywood imprint also in 1952--- #222 “Tripping With Tripp”/”Down On Me Blues” (no,me neither!)

    Here’s how “Nobody’s Woman” (Imperial 5190) shapes up release-wise

5190 John Tripp Letters, Letters, Letters ________________________________________Nobody's Woman 1952
5191 Rev. C.W. Killens and The Mt. Calvary Baptist
Church Choir Testing Faith ________________________________________Fighting For Jesus 1952
5192 Lil Son Jackson Travelin' Alone ________________________________________Young Women Blues 1952
5193 T-Bone Walker I Got The Blues ________________________________________Lollie Lou 1952
    5194 Smiley Lewis
Sextet The Bells Are Ringing ________________________________________Lillie Mae 1952

Vivian Verson – I Want To Know
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Oj-hgI2xXA

Good rhythmic effort by Ms Verson cut for J-B label owned by Jim Bulleit (of Bullet Records fame). Solid backing from Red Calhoun & His Orchestra.

Recorded in Nashville in 1952 and released as J-B 102

fwiw, the 1952 Singles Battle *by Artist* (won by Hank Williams)

got by re-arranging (in Notepad++ using a few regex and one sort): http://marcdashevsky.com/cgi-bin/battle.cgi?vote=rankings&rankyear=1952&who=

the point is, leaving aside some omitted adult pop hits, is that most
1952 releases that are not on this list should qualify as obscure

10 more obscurities chosen at random from my favorites lists

    Today......from 1952

Note : I have purposely chosen records that were NOT covered in Samp’s reviews

Little Willie Cotton – Gonna Shook It Up And Go https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwbWztg55Qg

Did not know it, good solid record, a high 6 for me.

    Arthur “Blues” Crump – I Wonder https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56mlpgUebvY

Did not know it. It's somewhat disjointed and sloppy, but his powerful singing gets it a solid 6.

Sonny Jones – Is Everything All Right? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEM9YLKDShQ

An excellent record, an 8. And he did it again on an album in 1975 and it's even better, a 9.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7mIlfriOkQ

Fat Man Matthews & The Four Kittens – Later Baby https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-03uDZ-3dAA

Another strong record, I have it as an 8.

The Mel-O-Tones – One More Time
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98gAqUU4nWY

It's the Mel-O-Dots, and this side is just decent, a 5. The organ break does not help. The flip side (Just How Long) is the side and gets a high 7. The lead there even has a similar style to how Elvis sang ballads.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOKEOHfW9vA

Mr Sad Head – Butcher Boy
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26a33cSoGmI

Good record, a solid 6, but I prefer the flip side, "Sad Head Blues."

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRuPWtOdSQc

Sad Head is backed here by Billy Ford (yes, the same Billy Ford of later “Billy & Lillie – La Dee Dah” fame) & His Orchestra. As well as borrowing my Dad’s name Billy was also unfortunate enough to hail from some godforsaken hellhole called
    Bloomfield, NJ

LOL, It's a very nice DEMOCRATIC community.

    The Serenaders – Misery
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAHoNK7v8_8

A good ne, a 7, and so is the flip side (But I Need You), which I think beats it by the proverbial cunt hair.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INIRPoAKRvs

    The Tilters – Ee-Til-Ya-Dee
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_fqH2w3v8Y

Just discovered this recently in a Cash Box review, solid 7.

    John Tripp – Nobody’s Woman
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYLFrgc8Rb8

Another very good one, a solid 7.

Vivian Verson – I Want To Know
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Oj-hgI2xXA

Another solid very good record, a 7.

Let's see what I can come up with aside from the flip sides I already added.

6 ¦ Good Bread Alley ¦ Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson

Not by an obscure artist, but I have never seen it mentioned as being any kind of a hit. I don't think Samp includes Cleanhead as rock and roll, so no review.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etdROjZ62-k

58 ¦ So Much Trouble ¦ Brownie McGhee & Sonny Terry

On Savoy, it was done by George Thorogood on one of his Rounder albums.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xx2SCCxeR8A

78 ¦ Forgive Me Baby ¦ Elmo Nixon (Henry Hayes Orchestra)

Another Savoy side that did not do much.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLdLkvnGYYE

99 ¦ The Frog Hop ¦ Hal Singer

Another odd Savoy record, this time an instrumental that was on the album that I gave everybody a copy of at UGHA when we all met in person in 2000.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwAggaw1CW4

101 ¦ Aching And Crying ¦ Gene Forrest

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUJujpNqsr4

    102 ¦ Stormy Weather ¦ Five Sharps

You can't get too much more obscure than this one:

    https://youtu.be/ooU8o78lMgw?t=9

130 ¦ Truckin' Little Woman ¦ Willie Nix

    Released on Checker - https://images.45worlds.com/f/78/willie-nix-truckin-little-woman-checker-78.jpg

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyNtLLlQmdA

    165 ¦ Sweet Lovin' Daddy-O ¦ Teardrops

It's on a label that has the same name as out MIA critic.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6wSTbQPMDY

184 ¦ Juke Joint Johnny ¦ Lattie Moore

Obscure early rockabilly on the Speed label.

    https://rcs-discography.com/rcs/show_pic.php?key=2966&type=ls

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0drtciUy2g

    196 ¦ Whoa, Boy ¦ Luke McDaniels

    Rockin' Country record on Trumpet.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3Recla-tZg

205 ¦ How Could You (Break My Heart) ¦ Enchanters

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1NR596HTwqg

    Early female Doo Wop group

216 ¦ Wild Man Boogie ¦ Ray Batts

Another strange one, country boogie featuring a trumpet and on the Bullet label.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=goIC0kR8KTQ

223 ¦ Just An Army Boy ¦ Boyd Gilmore

On a common label, but it's still obscure in the sense of people who know it.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RR7jmtQHZ4s

224 ¦ Lulubell Blues ¦ Frank "Fat Man" Humphries & the Four Notes

On Jubilee, supposedly with the Crows, who had not had a release of their own yet.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bSaHToApaw

227 ¦ Got You Begging ¦ Jay McShann (Pee Wee Matthews)

Ben Webster plays on this. I classify it as Jazz but it almost as much R&B as Jazz.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=358Q7N0_HBk

242 ¦ Blue Serenade ¦ Baby Face Turner

On Modern, sounds like an Elmore James influenced item.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8S07o_T3bv0

    246 ¦ You Can't But Love ¦ Lonnie Johnson

12 years before the Beatles got to this same subject.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBVmMqJUGQ4

252 ¦ Two Little Girls ¦ Jimmy Witherspoon

    From his time at Federal.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BH3cXRZgZM

271 ¦ Hold On To God's Unchanging Hand ¦ Sallee Martin Singers (Brother Joe May)

Brother Joe May rocks the house!

Not by an obscure artist, but I have never seen it mentioned as being any kind of a hit. I don't think Samp includes Cleanhead as rock and roll, so no review.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etdROjZ62-k

#58 on my list and a high 8. Way too bluesy for Samp...no way he'd ever include this

58 ¦ So Much Trouble ¦ Brownie McGhee & Sonny Terry

On Savoy, it was done by George Thorogood on one of his Rounder albums.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xx2SCCxeR8A

    #152 here and an 8

78 ¦ Forgive Me Baby ¦ Elmo Nixon (Henry Hayes Orchestra)

Another Savoy side that did not do much.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLdLkvnGYYE

    #129 and an 8

99 ¦ The Frog Hop ¦ Hal Singer

Another odd Savoy record, this time an instrumental that was on the album that I gave everybody a copy of at UGHA when we all met in person in 2000.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwAggaw1CW4

#485 and a 7. Yep,I have fond memories of that meet at UGHA too. And thanks again for the album

101 ¦ Aching And Crying ¦ Gene Forrest

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUJujpNqsr4

    #244 and a 7

    102 ¦ Stormy Weather ¦ Five Sharps

You can't get too much more obscure than this one:

    https://youtu.be/ooU8o78lMgw?t=9

Samp did include this of course so I didn't

I've written about this one before---I like that they kept the right tempo for the song so in that way its my #3 fave version of a great old standard (after the earlier Lena and Ethel superlative versions)

On my faves list its 204 and a 7

130 ¦ Truckin' Little Woman ¦ Willie Nix

    Released on Checker - https://images.45worlds.com/f/78/willie-nix-truckin-little-woman-checker-78.jpg

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyNtLLlQmdA

    #251 and a 7

    165 ¦ Sweet Lovin' Daddy-O ¦ Teardrops

It's on a label that has the same name as out MIA critic.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6wSTbQPMDY

    #146 and an 8

And on SAMPSON label of course :)

Plus it was one of my nominations in the January 2022 Obscurities contest and made the last four but sadly came last there. Contest was won by Mark and "Big Mary's House" - The Solitaires

184 ¦ Juke Joint Johnny ¦ Lattie Moore

Obscure early rockabilly on the Speed label.

    https://rcs-discography.com/rcs/show_pic.php?key=2966&type=ls

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0drtciUy2g

#168 and an 8. I recall writing in a post suggesting this one in a Samp's future reviews post (for December 1952) saying I didn't think he'd stretch to including it.

    And he didn't

    196 ¦ Whoa, Boy ¦ Luke McDaniels

    Rockin' Country record on Trumpet.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3Recla-tZg

    #378 and a 7

205 ¦ How Could You (Break My Heart) ¦ Enchanters

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1NR596HTwqg

    Early female Doo Wop group

Yep,nothing at all to do with that later "Mambo Santa Mambo" male group nor with later still Garnet Mimms
    crowd

    #452 and a 7

216 ¦ Wild Man Boogie ¦ Ray Batts

Another strange one, country boogie featuring a trumpet and on the Bullet label.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=goIC0kR8KTQ

    #284 and a 7

223 ¦ Just An Army Boy ¦ Boyd Gilmore

On a common label, but it's still obscure in the sense of people who know it.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RR7jmtQHZ4s

    #172 and a 7

I prefer the "A" side on this one - "Ramblin' On My Mind"

    That's #151 and an 8

224 ¦ Lulubell Blues ¦ Frank "Fat Man" Humphries & the Four Notes

On Jubilee, supposedly with the Crows, who had not had a release of their own yet.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bSaHToApaw

    #471 and a 7

227 ¦ Got You Begging ¦ Jay McShann (Pee Wee Matthews)

Ben Webster plays on this. I classify it as Jazz but it almost as much R&B as Jazz.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=358Q7N0_HBk

Not on my list probably too jazzy tho I don't recall hearing it before

242 ¦ Blue Serenade ¦ Baby Face Turner

On Modern, sounds like an Elmore James influenced item.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8S07o_T3bv0

Didn't know this. Sounds OK need a few more spins. Almost certainly a good 7

    246 ¦ You Can't But Love ¦ Lonnie Johnson

12 years before the Beatles got to this same subject.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBVmMqJUGQ4

This one didn't do much for me as neither did that Beatles thing either :)

252 ¦ Two Little Girls ¦ Jimmy Witherspoon

    From his time at Federal.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BH3cXRZgZM

    #446 and a 7

His best for the yea IMO is the Leiber & Stoller "Corn Whiskey" from DEcember 1952

271 ¦ Hold On To God's Unchanging Hand ¦ Sallee Martin Singers (Brother Joe May)

Brother Joe May rocks the house!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEUp-Jy-JhU

I'm not so big on gospel. Didn't know this need a few more spins it might grow on me

I've written about this one before---I like that they kept the right tempo for the song so in that way its my #3 fave version of a great old standard (after the earlier Lena and Ethel superlative versions)

I like the Spaniels version too but I'm not crazy about that tempo change

I've made several posts here before expressing my liking fo r the Sharps version so its nothing new
