If you never heard of this one before you’d be excused for thinking this was a number by a femme artist---but you’d be sooooooo wrong!

Actually this “June” is a guy and a soon-to-be famous one too (tho sadly not with this record). However his NEXT record (a year later) will see the now properly named Arthur Alexander better move on---high into the charts with his famous first hit (�
�June” was short for “Junior” apparently)

Meantime I always considered the moody “Sally Sue Brown” recorded at the Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama an excellent debut on Jud Phillips’ (Sam’s bro) own label

The Avons – Once Upon A Time

I ain’t about to inflict those totally horrible Avons (of “Seven Little Girls” fame) from here in England on ya!

Nope,these are the earlier (and infinitely better) American group of that name from Englewood,N.J comprising Bob Lea (lead) Irvin Watson (1st tenor) Wendell Lea (2nd tenor) Bill Lea (baritone) and Curtis Norris (bass)

Between 1956 and 1962 they had some seven singles out on the Hull label several of which I really liked plus also a really good LP that contains the track in question here---“Once Upon A Time”

Okay so how’s about we swap Avons groups? Yours for ours?

P.S Of course---just to complicate things----there was a THIRD “Avons” group---this time from Nashville on Groove label in 1963 with “Push A Little Harder”. To avoid conflict with the existing UK Avons this group was renamed “The Novas” (
think about it) for UK consumption

Buddy Covelle – Lorraine

Likeable catchy rockabilly item from one Buddy Covelle originally from Shreveport,Louisiana. Recorded for Coral “Lorraine” also appeared later on a “Forest City” label but this was a boot from later in the 60’s.

“Lorraine”’s first appearance in the UK was on the MCA compilation “Rare Rockabillys Vol. 3” in 1978

Here’s how “Billboard” reviewed it (March 21 1960)

The Del-Chords – Help Me

The Del-Chords had their one and only record released on Jin label in 1960.

The group from Bunkie,Louisiana comprised Frankie Simmons,James Jackson,Arthur Sterling,Marshall Hawkins and Arthur Lee Searcy.They impressed local record company boss Floyd Soileau (owner of Jin Records) enough to record and release “Help Me”

Sadly despite regular local airplay the single didn’t live up to sales expectations and consequently after their brief outing on wax The Del-Chords were never heard from again

Country artist Jimmy Patton had been around since 1955 releasing sporadic singles on Sims label before venturing into the rockabilly scene with “Yah I’m Movin’” on Sage in 1958.

Two years passed before his next record in 1960 (and IMO his best). This was the raucous rocker “Okie’s In The Pokie” (the pride of Norm K’s collection as he never tired of telling us 😊). This was released on the Hilligan label based in
Phoenix Arizona and is the only release I know of on the label. Anyone ever see or hear anything else?

Almost at once the Sims label rushed out with an “Okie’s In The Pokie” release too---tho with the brief spoken section that opens the Hilligan release absent.

And that about sums up Jimmy’s venture onto the rock ‘n’ roll scene. Apart from an EP of older tracks in the idiom from Ronny Weiser’s Rollin’ Rock outfit on the West Coast the rest of Jimmy’s output was pure country on the Moon and Sims
labels

Jimmy Patton died in 1990.

Born Harding Wilson in Crockett Texas in 1927 influential bluesman Hop Wilson cut his first records in 1958 for Eddie Shuler at Goldband Records in Lake Charles before emerging later in 1960 as “Poppa Hop” on Ivory Records in Houston where he cut the
fine “My Woman Has A Black Cat Bone” with Elmore Nixon (pno) and
Ivory Simien (dms)

Several later musicians have acknowledged the influence of Wilson and his music on them including Ronnie Woods (of the Stones),Peter Green (Fleetwood Mac) etc and the “Black Cat Bone” number has found its way into several later repertoires including
Johnny Winter,Albert Collins & Johnny Copeland etc

There’s even a version in 1978 by someone with the unlikely name of Jim Colegrove---
but that couldn’t possibly be the same……….

The number is on my 1960 list because it first appears on their “Will The Circle Be Unbroken” LP on Vee Jay.And said LP is a 1960 release

But most of all its on that list because along with their earlier “Uncloudy Day” it’s one of my very favorite on topic gospel numbers ever

I guess this is Thomas’ best known record---the reworking of a Little Richard number recorded for George Motola and released in 1960 on his Transcontinental label based in Hollywood,Ca. Ultra-wild shouter with some way out harmonica in there that was
wildly popular on the London rock ‘n’ roll scene over here.

In later years after a spell recording as “Tommy Louis” on Muriel label,Thomas worked mowing peoples lawns in the Los Angeles area. One day whilst driving his truck to a job his vehicle struck a young boy and killed him. On trial for manslaughter
Thomas’ case was eventually dismissed for lack of evidence---but the dead kid’s father had waited outside the court house for Thomas to exit.

The groups members all hailed from the Tifton,Georgia area and so unsurprisingly found themselves recording for the local Tifco label (soon to be home of the great 1961 “Kokomo Me Baby” by Danny Boy) where “It’s Raining” seems to have been
their one and only release

Easy Deal Wilson – Gotta Have You

Born Robert Wilson in 1927 the likeable country rockin’ “Gotta Have You” was his first record for the small Debra label of Peckville,Pa.

I’ve never seen or heard this version and can only assume it is the same as the YT version posted here and was probably licenced to the larger Sims label in California for wider distribution.Does anyone know for sure on this?

Later records followed by him---he turned up again as “Bob Wilson & The Easy Dealers” on Trey label later in 1960 then back to “Easy Deal Wilson” on Viv in 1961 (with what looks an interesting version of “When My Blue Moon Turns To Gold Again”
in 1962 (tho once again I’ve never seen or heard this) plus entries on Park Ave in 1963 and Park Central in 1964

Discogs has no date, but they have Gospel 1008 as 1958 and this is Gospel
1022. I found a review in June 1959, so it will be moved there. Thanks.
