10 more obscurities chosen at random from my favorites lists

    Today......from 1957

THE ECHO VALLEY BOYS - WASH MACHINE BOOGIE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtQrNYFPZJw

Tremendous seller when this one hit the UK rock ‘n’ roll scene when heavily booted in the 70’s.

The Echo Valley Boys all hailing from Ohio comprised Bill Browning,Merl Hoaf,Jackie Wooten,Roy Barker
and Marshall Looney. This insistent rockabilly item by the group on their debut was recorded for the small
    Island label of Cleveland. .

THE ESQUIRES - ONLY THE ANGELS KNOW
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbxKfRjrLKY

Beautiful ballad on the Hi-Po label out of Nashville from a group with a very interesting history (I think).

Reputed to be descended from the earlier Five Tinos who recorded for Sun (“Don’t Do That”/”Sitting By The
Window” in 1955) they may have a further incarnation too---as some think they also became the later Teenos
    on Dub in 1958

Either way if you’re looking to buy an original 45 of this one better check out the remortgage value on
    your house first 😊

MILLIARD LEE (THE FIVE STARS) - HEY JUANITA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cf--IjvxOzk

First pressings of this on Blues Boy Kingdom label in Memphis (as might be guessed the record label started up by B.B. King) have the side just credited to “Milliard Lee And Orchestra”

Actually it’s the Five Stars who do all the heavy lifting here and later pressings on the label properly credit “The Five Stars” (but still add “Milliard Lee & Orchestra” underneath)

Natives of Dallas,Tx the Five Stars comprised Al Braggs (lead) Cal Valentine,Robert Lee Valentine,Jesse Floyd and Billie Fred Thomas. They began their career as “The Five Notes” cutting “Park Your Love” for Chess in 1955. “Hey Juanita” was
their next record after a suitable name change. Then it was time for one more name change to The Five Masks (!) for “Forever And A Day” on Jan in 1958.

So endeth the career of the Five Stars. All except for one Star.

Al Braggs went on with a solo career in the 1960’s and sold quite a few records for Don Robey at Duke/Peacock now --slightly renamed--as soul star Al “TNT” Braggs

But whilst they were still the Five Stars the boys were signed to appear in a rock ‘n’ roll movie “Rock Baby Rock It” a real poverty row grade Z effort---but with a highly interesting musical lineup featuring Rosco Gordon,Johnny Carroll and
    others.

The Five Stars perform the rocking “Hey Juanita” in the movie and here ‘tis
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUYxr20ePEQ

P.S That’s Milliard Lee on piano!

THE RHYTHM CASTERS - LOVE LOVE BABY
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jOUCQZp5xnY

Here’s one you either love or loathe.Noisy, disjointed it’s a glorious mess that for me is irresistible.

No idea of the membership of the group that only seem to have this one record to their name (who said that’s one too many? 😊)

Seems to be the only thing they ever recorded and released on one of the top r&b/blues labels of the time---Excello

AL SIMMONS - OLD FOLKS BOOGIE
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o14L1SfPhXk

Just one side of a sizzling blues rockin’ double sider (check out the equally good “You Ain’t Too Old”) from Mr Al Simmons recorded for Johnny Otis’ Dig label in Los Angeles.

Solid backing here is from “Slim Green & The Cats From Fresno”

HAYDEN THOMPSON - LOVE MY BABY
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPkWf23MBrA

Hailing from Booneville,Mississippi it comes as no surprise that Thompson cut his first record---a straight country song titled “I Feel The Blues Coming On”----for the town’s Von label in 1955 (shortly before Johnny Burnette cut his debut record
    for that company too)

Signing with Sam Phillips at Sun in Memphis in 1956 he cut a revival of the 1953 Little Junior Parker song “Love My Baby” (that was the flipside of Junior’s original version of “Mystery Train” ---which the song here has a strong resemblance to)

Cut at the 706 Union Ave studio December 20 1956 the backing is from Roland Janes (gtr) Marvin Pepper (bs)
James Van Eaton (dms) and Jerry Lee Lewis (pno)

(It’s the record everyone forgets when toting up the songs by other artists where Jerry Lee provided backing on piano whilst he was with the Sun label)

THE THUNDERBIRDS - IN MY THUNDERBIRD https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysza3FhUxSs

Huge favorite New York vocal group rocker that "Cash Box" said this about :-

    “THE THUNDERBIRDS (Holiday 2609)
    B “IN MY THUNDERBIRD” (2:37)
    [Everlast BMI-Ruflin, Bowden,Robinson]

The Thunderbirds team with good results on a middle beat shuffle story of the Thunderbird car.Deck is embroidered with a solid beat and a swingy reading. Deck will sell in good quantities wherever it gets steady exposure”

    THE UNIVERSALS - AGAIN
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yzT6mL1kAk

Here’s a group I know little about except they are almost certainly from the Philadelphia area as the record is on the Mark label located in that fair city (of which I have MANY happy memories)

The song is a different matter---beautiful version of a beautiful song that goes back to 1948. Penned by Dorcas Cochran the original recording was by the UK’s own Vera Lynn.

On US release the song was covered in multiple versions (as was the norm back then) and was popular enough to chart in no less than SEVEN different versions (including Dame Vera herself). The other artists charting (in order of success) were Doris Day,
Gordon Jenkins (both reached #2 in “Billboard”)---then Mel Torme.Vic Damone,Tommy Dorsey and Art Mooney

    OSCAR WILLS - FLATFOOT SAM
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmTe-XAxpI4

Ignore the wrong year listed on the YT clip---but one of the YT commentators (paulriotski) sums up this fine record perfectly :-

“Oscar Wills' brief moment in the spotlight came in 1957. He had written an uptempo song called "Flat Foot Sam", about an unfortunate soul who was "always in a jam". Mira Smith from Shreveport, the owner of Ram Records, had just set up a new label,
Clif Records, in partnership with Cliff Hagen. "Flat Foot Sam" was first recorded for Clif (# 103), credited to T.V. Slim and his Heartbreakers. It made some noise in the Arkansas-Louisiana-Texas region, mainly due to heavy plugging on the Stan Lewis-
sponsored R&B show on KWKH in Shreveport. Thanks to his connections with Leonard Chess, Stan Lewis managed to get the record leased to Chess Records for national distribution. Instead of reissuing the disc right away on one of his labels (Chess, Checker,
Argo), Leonard Chess asked Wills if he could go to New Orleans and do a recut of "Flat Foot Sam" with Cosimo Matassa's Studio band. This second, much improved version was recorded in June 1957, with prominent roles for Robert Parker on tenor sax and
Charles 'Hungry' Williams on drums. It was released in August on Argo 5277, under his own name, Oscar Wills. While the Clif release showed the song's writer as Clara Wills (probably Oscar's wife), writer's credit on the Argo single now went to O. Wills
and S. Lewis. This was a fairly common practice at Chess: the artist / songwriter had to share the publishing with someone who would give the record exposure, Stan Lewis in this case. Why Leonard Chess still decided to reissue the Clif version on Checker
870 (in the same month as the Argo remake) is a mystery to me. Ironically, Billboard gave the original version of "Flat Foot Sam" a higher rating (77) than the Argo single (75). (Issue of August 26, 1957.)”

Ok this is me writing now 😊

Dunno how many folk who own this single today got their copy from us but on our first trip together to USA in 1971 we found bulk copies of both the TV Slim (Checker) and the Oscar Wills (Argo) in that legendary Chess mountain and shipped quantity on both
back to our then-not-yet-opened London store

PEANUTS WILSON - CAST IRON ARM
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWuO0favjEk

“That’ll teach ya to mess with me boy”

Maybe not *quite* as obscure as some others here but I think it qualifies for inclusion here since its been a favorite of mine for many years---ever since its release here in the UK in fact (it featured in a Kent Walton “Cool For Cats” TV show in
early 1958 where I first heard it—and fell in love with it)

Of course I didn’t know then that Johnny “Peanuts” Wilson had been around for years---playing rhythm guitar behind Roy Orbison on his early sides. It wasn’t till 1957 he cut some solo sides including “Cast Iron Arm” for Norman Petty’s Nor-Va-
Jak outfit who passed the song to Brunswick for US release (it was on Coral here). It pretty well sank without trace on both sides of the puddle but it was always an item on the UK rock ‘n’ roll scene and really exploded in the 70’s when it was
booted big time and reflected that in enormous sales figures

    Here’s a more detailed article on him :- https://tims.blackcat.nl/messages/peanuts_wilson.htm

    Excellent tack, an 8.

THE ESQUIRES - ONLY THE ANGELS KNOW https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbxKfRjrLKY

Also an excellent track, an 8. The Sparrows Qt. did it on the show that I posted recently.

MILLIARD LEE (THE FIVE STARS) - HEY JUANITA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cf--IjvxOzk

A 7, very good track, but not the best "Juanita" song of this year.

Here’s one you either love or loathe. Noisy, disjointed it’s a glorious mess that for me is irresistible.

I don't love or loathe it. It's pretty good, a 5. My "pretty good" probably is the same as your decent.

In this newsgroup, and for all classic rockabilly fans, it's very well

But for the general population aged 65+ both records are likely

It was not in the 1957 SINGLES BATTLE and many charting records,
including this one, are now obscure after 60+ years. An example
of a 50s charting record that is not obscure today for the majority
of senior citizens, like yourself Bruce, is Doris Day's Teachers Pet.

"Obscure" has never been clearly defined for this ongoing theme.

Certainly anything making the pop chart is disqualified from being any kid of obscurity.

    Bruce, I don't see Slim Harpo's 1957 "I'm A King Bee" on a Billboard
    pop chart.

If you want to extend your definition of Obscure, please do so,
but please, Bruce, *do not be vague*. For instance, you could specify
that the side must not be on a Billboard R&B chart. It then follows
that a side must not appear on a Billboard Country chart.

Most definitely obscure in his cannon, but a great ballad none the less.

No sure if the guitar strumming is Elvis or Scotty, but it does detract
    from it.

Recorded January 19, 1957, Radio Recorders Hollywood.

Steve, I can only hear one guitar, a repetitive electric guitar,
and I thought Elvis only played with an acoustic guitar?

I don't think Elvis played much on anything after Sun. He did do the bass opening on "Baby I Don't Care" after Bill Black could not get with the brand new electric bass right away. The info I have from his 1950s box set does list Elvis as playing the
second guitar on the session where they did the song.

You're probably right about Scotty playing it.  The info I have shows
both him and Scotty on guitar, but that's for the whole session, which
also produced It Is No Secret, Blueberry Hill & Have I Told You Lately
That I Love You. It doesn't break it down by song.
