    Thanks Dean.

If and when available, the Mixcloud link will be even more user
friendly (more granularity/control on the playing bar, and there's a
    vertical sound volume control bar).

That link, if it's created, will likely be: https://www.mixcloud.com/dean-fiora/roots-rock-radio-1950s-rock-roll-june-9-2024/

Usually I talk about how much I like this show of familiar records from
my childhood. Today, though, there were NINE records I had never heard
before. Unfortunately I didn't like most of them. But on a positive note....no Jack Scott this week! 😉

These are the ones I didn't know:
    2. DOUBLE TALKIN’ BABY, Gene Vincent & The Blue Caps
    4. ROSIE LEE, The Mello-Tones
    12. TO BE A PART OF YOU, The Clickettes
    22. GONNA BE LOVED, Linda & The Epics
    33. LET’S HAVE A BALL, The Wheels
    34. WHISTLE BAIT, The Collins Kids
    36. BELIEVE ME, The Skyliners
    37. HEART DARLING ANGEL, The Orlons
    45. GOODNIGHT SWEETHEART, The Flamingos

    1. HOT ROD, Hal Singer

Highlight of the Regent "Rock 'N Roll" various artists LP that was
kindly presented to all of us at that show that time by Bruce. Thanks
    buddy! Happy memories!

This album actually appeared here in UK in 1957 on London in a 10* LP
exact same track listing same cover
version. In all the years I've been involved in this shit I have NEVER
seen a copy--not EVAH! You can see the damn thing here :-

    https://www.45worlds.com/vinyl/album/hbc1067

    2. DOUBLE TALKIN’ BABY, Gene Vincent & The Blue Caps

From the 1957 "Gene Vincent & The Blue Caps" LP. Never a huge fan of
this particular number which became very popular over here in the
(inferior IMO) 1958 Bobby Milano version that was booted big time.

Here's that version. You be the judge :-

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uD4XNmimTqU

    3. SHE SAID “YEAH,” Larry Williams

Larry's material provided rich pickings for several of the UK outfits
getting ever more popular in the early 60's---"She Said Yeah" appeared
in versions by The Animals,Cliff Bennett & Rebel Rousers and of course
The Rolling Stones whilst the flip "Bad Boy" became a staple in the
    early Beatles repertoire.

    7. YOUR TRUE LOVE, Carl Perkins

My Carl Perkins favorites for 1957

    Matchbox Carl Perkins
Put Your Cat Clothes On Carl Perkins(unreleased)
Everybody’s Trying To Be My Baby Carl Perkins
    Wrong Yo-Yo Carl Perkins
Her Love Rubbed Off Carl Perkins (unreleased)
Pink Pedal Pushers Carl Perkins (Sun version) (unreleased) Caldonia Carl Perkins (unreleased)
You Can Do No Wrong Carl Perkins (unreleased)
    Your True Love Carl Perkins

    etc

    10. BREATHLESS, Jerry Lee Lewis

IMO Jerry Lee did some much better stuff in 1958 as evidenced by my JLL
    1958 faves listing

It’ll Be Me Jerry Lee Lewis (LP version)
    Lewis Boogie Jerry Lee Lewis
Big Legged Woman Jerry Lee Lewis (unreleased)
Wild One Jerry Lee Lewis (unreleased)
Put Me Down Jerry Lee Lewis
Down The Line Jerry Lee Lewis
    Ubangi Stomp Jerry Lee Lewis
High School Confidential Jerry Lee Lewis
Milkshake Madamoiselle Jerry Lee Lewis (unreleased)
Carryin’ On Jerry Lee Lewis (unreleased)
    Goodnight Irene Jerry Lee Lewis
Good Rockin’ Tonight Jerry Lee Lewis (unreleased)
    Breathless Jerry Lee Lewis

    11. BEEN SO LONG, The Pastels

As well as the great "Been So Long" (originally on Mascot before Chess
obtained the master and put it out on their Argo subsid) The Pastels
deserve our eternal thanks for bequeathing to us Big Dee Irwin of
    "Swinging On A Star" fame

    15. CRAZY COUNTRY HOP, The Johnny Otis Show

Excellent followup to "Willie & The Hand Jive" this time relating the
exploits of Snaggle Tooth Belinda and her country kinfolk (the Willie
sequel "Willie Did The Cha Cha" is the flipside here)

    16. CATHY’S CLOWN, The Everly Brothers

IIRC the move by Don & Phil from Cadence to Warner Bros saw the world's
first ever million dollar record contract signed. And it produced one of
their very best numbers---the million selling "Cathy's Clown"
#1 on both sides of the pond in 1960

    18. I’M IN LOVE AGAIN, Fats Domino

Absolutely immaculate Fats recording one of his very,VERY best! Led a
spate of cover and subsequent versions ranging from the good (Ricky
Nelson) to the just tolerable (Fontane Sisters) to the downright draggy
    and bad

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJdXoEFHEmk

    19. THE ABCs OF LOVE, Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers

Those scenes in the "American Hot Wax" movie where Laraine Newman as the
Carole King-like figure writes this song always kinda bothered me

    20. MILKCOW BLUES BOOGIE, Elvis Presley

Apparently the poorest selling of the five Sun singles by Elvis

    21. I HEAR YOU KNOCKING, Smiley Lewis

Great original that was criminally overlooked for UK release at the time
so all we got was the limp Gale Storm cover (and months later than the
    US--in 1956 here).

Plus our cover version of course which proved once again that when it
comes to truly awful covers we British were usually the best :)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LePIrnj8C1s

    22. GONNA BE LOVED, Linda & The Epics

Thank you Dean for introducing me to a "newie". Like Diane I wasn't
familiar with this one before. Not bad at all but need to hear it a few
more times. Was this ever booted?

    25. THERE’S NO OTHER (Like My Baby), The Crystals

Hugely rare on UK release (pre-Beatles Parlophone label). All their
other records (and all subsequent Philles releases) appeared here on
    London label

    28. DON’T SAY NOTHIN’ BAD (About My Baby), The Cookies

I liked their "Chains" but didn't connect with this one so
much.Incidentally tho their version wasn't released until MUCH later The
Everly Brothers recorded "Chains" first--before The Cookies---in 1962

    38. HONEY HUSH, Big Joe Turner

Original Joe Turner record on Atlantic titled "Yakity Yak". Retitled
    "Honey Hush" on later copies

    40. RUMBLE, Link Wray

GREAT instrumental! My #2 fave instrumental of 1958 (after Duane's
    "Rebel Rouser")

    44. LOVER’S ISLAND, The Blue Jays

Terrific 1961 vocal group classic that was apparently scheduled for
release over here on Top Rank. Dunno what happened but it fell through.
Don't think it ever got pressed,I've never seen a UK copy

This one was weird for me. I really like the beat and the arrangement,

    like chalk on a blackboard.

I actually introduced Roger Ford to a '50s number he hadn't heard
    before? Color me shocked!

I don't know if it was ever booted. What I do know is that it came out
in 1959 on the minuscule Blue Moon label out of Santa Cruz, CA. As I
stated on mike, an original mint condition 45 could pretty much put a
kid through four years of Harvard.

Stick to DJing, you know nothing about record collecting. The last copy
of the 45 that was sold on Discogs back in January went for a whopping
$35. They recommend selling a near mint copy for $130. That probably
would not even be enough to pay for the Harvard application.

He even made a disco record under the name "DiFosco" (his real first
name). But back on topic, in 1958 the Pastels put out a very decent
single, "You Don't Love Me Any More" b/w "Let's Go To The Rock & Roll
Ball." I may not have those titles exactly right.

These are the ones I didn't know:

    firstly, all nine sides were already in my digital collection;
'gold star' refers to an existing suffix added to the mp3(s)

    2. DOUBLE TALKIN BABY, Gene Vincent & The Blue Caps
has a 'gold star'; later adopted by the Stray Cats

    4. ROSIE LEE, The Mello-Tones
Whitburn #190 for 1957 (ie not strictly speaking 'obscure')

    12. TO BE A PART OF YOU, The Clickettes
okay for this sub-genre but kinda ordinary

    22. GONNA BE LOVED, Linda & The Epics
    well-known to period rockabilly fans;
    I agree the vocal as recorded is a bit too high-pitched for comfort;
is in my digital collection as a track on these albums/collections:
    Girl Powered Rockabilly (3 cds)
Rock 'n' Roll Girls (10 cds)
    Hot Boppin' Girls (4 cds)
Rockabilly & Hillbilly Bop (18 cds)
Loud, Fast and Out Of Control (107 tracks)
    Rock-A-Billy Artists (50 cds)
    Savage Rockin' Girls (35 tracks)
Wild, Wild Young Women (25 tracks)

    33. LETS HAVE A BALL, The Wheels
this admirable rockin' R&B side has a 'gold star'

    34. WHISTLE BAIT, The Collins Kids
    well-known to period rockabilly fans;
Lorrie and Larry Collins - Whistle Bait [Columbia 4-41225] - 1958
    (G).mp3

    36. BELIEVE ME, The Skyliners
    despite being in my collection I do not recall hearing it before now;
this [Calico 120;b-side] from 1960 is, to quote, "a powerful wall of
sound doo wop ballad with steel guitar (a novel touch that works
    perfectly)"

    37. HEART, DARLING, ANGEL, The Orlons
three girls and a guy from 1961; bit repetitive, not a keeper

    45. GOODNIGHT SWEETHEART, The Flamingos
this slow ballad from 1959, on label End, also has a 'gold star'
