HE CARNATIONS – LONG TALL GIRL
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMn0u08P8mA
It's #50 on my 1961 list, and 8.
DANNY BOY – KOKOMO ME BABY
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWY4oiBGEY0
A low 6 here.
BETTY JAMES – I’M A LITTLE MIXED UP
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpoq5YwFW4I
Just heard this Saturday night. It's #155 for the year here, a 7.
MARIE KNIGHT – COME TOMORROW
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edq7afci-B8
Doesn't do much for me, a 5.
THE MANDELLS – DARLING I’M HOME
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cy49_exznr8
Another 5.
THE QUOTATIONS - IMAGINATION
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RwRR05nPYQ
Catchy white doo wop version of an old standard which was happening a
lot in 1961 led by the Marcels 2 big hits that year. It's a 6.
Then I remembered where Ricky Nelson had started out………………
Speaking of Ricky his 50s albums are on my 1950s Album tracks playlist.
The first one came on a couple of days ago and then the next one today.
You can hear how much better he was singing "Shirley Lee" and "Good
Rockin' Tonight" on the second album than the way he did "Boppin' The
Blues" and "Whole Lotta Shakin'" on the first album. He was very stiff
and not very sure of himself on that first album, but he sounded much
more like a veteran rockabilly singer on the e second album which was recorded just 2-3 months later.
CHARLES SHEFFIELD – IT’S YOUR VOODOO WORKING
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZRBCq8vLjg
Another 5. I am not near as big on the typical 1961 sound as most of
the
rest of the regulars here. Probably one reason why I love the early
Beatles so much. They took everything out of the doldrums of the sounds
that were real popular at the time.
SMOKEY SMOTHERS – HONEY I AIN’T TEASIN’
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vlowpkq7mWA
A KILLER 9 that's #13 for the year for me.
WAYNE WORLEY - RED HEADED WOMAN
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8uwTp6Ya7s0
A 6. Good remake, but nowhere near Sonny's classic 1956 version.
Let's see what I can come up with:
226 ¦ Want Ad Blues - John Lee Hooker https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71uuK16fH2A
Vee Jay 397, it went nowhere, but it's a hit in this house.
225 ¦ Green Sally, Up - Jessie Pratcher, Mattie Gardner & Mary Gardner https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vThjLnoZL6I
Short chant from 3 neighborhood girls from the album "I'll Be So Glad
When the Sun Goes Down: Alan Lomax’s "Southern Journey," 1959–1960."
215 ¦ It's The Holy Ghost ¦ Reverend Lawrence Roberts & The Angelic
Gospel Choir
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1-cJrM2PeY
Don't know if this came before "Hit The Road Jack" or not, but I really
like it, AND it's on SAVOY!
214 ¦ I Just Don't Know ¦ Lightnin' Slim https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gS6tIG5COYY
"Rooster Blues" part 3 or so.
211 ¦ Come Home Soon ¦ Intruders https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAtxUyKOShA
Same Philly group that struck gold with "Cowboy To Girls" about 7 years later.
194 ¦ Let It Be - Bette Watts
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nR7iaeoH3Ck
No mother Mary here, just an R&B burner with Bette backed up by a solid
vocal group.
183 ¦ Daddy Must Be A Man ¦ Unforgettables https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJ0o50szn5Q
I suppose it's a doo wop, but it's also a strong R&B sound.
179 ¦ Why Don't You Write Me ¦ Cardinals https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnzFScgQ6dk
Nice doo wop remake with a very strong bass singer.
174 ¦ Rock Out Of This World ¦ Joe Norris https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBiQwa7ibGo
This one sounds more like rockabilly from like 1957.
99 ¦ Now That I Have You ¦ Willows https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Srq-JYd6Cpw
A group collectors favorite, it doesn't see like a record that sounds
like this would be on the 4 Star label, which was mainly a country
label.
BONUS - I found a live version of this by the original group performing
in New Hampshire of all places in 1983.

Don't have this listed but I guess I need to add it. It'll be a 7 I
think. Not sure if its before HTRJ or not but I'd bet heavy on "after"

#182 and a 7

So the record is by the different California Willows but the live
performance is the "Church Bells May Ring" guys?

Let's see what I can come up with:
CHARLES SHEFFIELD – IT’S YOUR VOODOO WORKING https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZRBCq8vLjg------------
Hailing from Lake Charles,La. unsurprisingly Sheffield made his
recording debut in 1957 on Eddie Shuler’s Goldband label in that fair
town (billed as “Mad Dog Sheffield” and backed by Clarence “Bon Ton” Garlow & His Band) on the predictable bluesy and very good “Mad Dog”

Let me thank you somewhat belatedly for posting about "Mad Dog" in your
1957 thread. Johnny Winter did that song on his 1984 "Guitar Slinger"
album, and I'd always thought it was an original by him. Very glad to
hear the *real* original, which--surprise!--I like better.

The "Mad Dog" song was also revived in an adapted version--definitely---------
not to my taste-by Lee Michaels in 1970
