• TEN FAVE UNRELEASED TRACKS FROM....1957

From Roger@21:1/5 to All on Sun Jun 23 12:52:16 2024
Ten fave unreleased tracks chosen from my yearly Favorites lists

    Today………from 1957

EDDIE BO – WALK THAT WALK
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8p3_Oxo5cI

As with all tracks listed here this gem was recorded in 1957 but didn’t appear on record until many years later. In this case I believe it first appears on the 1995 “Chess New Orleans” album

Personnel : Eddie Bocage (vcl, pno) Frank Fields (bass) Charles Williams
(dms) Justin Adams (gtr) unknown (sax)

JOHNNY CARROLL & HIS HOT ROCKS - ROCK BABY ROCK IT https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_ApCzT2EWA

Used as the title to perhaps the most grade Z-est of the the several
grade Z poverty row rock ‘n’ roll movies that appeared in the 1950’s and certainly the rarest (I don’t think the movie played in too many US
locations and it certainly never made it to here in UK at the
time—leastways I can find no record of it being shown here back then)

The movie is available to watch here:- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P938Z-TEP4c&t=4096s

The number was first recorded 23 June 1957 at the Clifford Herring Sound
    Studio in Fort Worth, TX.
Personnel Johnny Carroll [vcl/gt], Jay Salem [ld gtr], Billy Buntin
    [bass], George Jones (dms) Bill
    Hennen [pno]) .

BTW yes folks, that is THE “George Jones” on drums, the original famous
    rock ‘n’ roll hating George!

The session results were sent to Sam Phillips at Sun Records in
Memphis---who issued a single by Johnny
Carroll on his new “Phillips International” label---“That’s The Way I Love”/”I’ll Wait”

Finally the fourth song from this session was “You Made Me Love You” and yes, it IS that same old song that you thought it was 😊

BO DIDDLEY & THE FLAMINGOS – YOU KNOW I LOVE YOU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjiBiI4Auo4

A truly beautiful recording but one where several important facts about
    it (including the recording
    date) are in dispute.

The 1990’s Bo Diddley sessions book has Johnny Carter of the Flamingos
plus some members of the Moonglows backing Bo on this one recorded for
Checker plus adding that the recording dates from 1960 (tho everything
I’ve ever read on it says 1957)

One thing NOT in dispute is the quality of the track. SHEER BEAUTY!!!

    THE DUBS – CONNIE
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QajcC-pgXZI

One of the several “practice” numbers laid down during their sojourn at Hiram Johnson’s self named Johnson label in 1957 (prior to their success
on Gone label with “Could This Be Magic”) but never issued at the time.

Finally released in 1973 by Wayne Stierle on a “rejuvenated” Johnson
    45rpm issue

Full story on The Dubs here in excellent Unca Marvy review https://www.uncamarvy.com/Dubs/dubs.html

THE FOUR DUKES – WALKING ALONE
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1W6xsPVen-c

A rare doowop recorded by Sun Records in Memphis!

OK anyone out there got the list of members of this group? I’ve checked
all my records but to no avail.

Suffice to say that this nice “Heart And Soul” ripoff ballad was
recorded March 15 1957 at 706 Union in Memphis backed by Roland Janes
(gtr) Stan Kesler (bs) Smokey Joe Baugh (dms)

ROSCO GORDON – CHICKEN IN THE ROUGH
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x67m69

OK folks time to revisit the “Rock Baby Rock It” movie mentioned above
(in the Johnny Carroll review). While the movie itself lives well up to
its deserved Grade Z reputation it does contain several really excellent performances of which Rosco’s great version of “Chicken In The Rough” is one of the very best.

Question – how the heck did they get the chicken to stay on the piano?

JERRY LEE LEWIS – ALL NIGHT LONG
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pG8A-m9CvIM

Not to be confused with his different 1968 song of that title recorded
for Mercury, this torrid rocker--recorded for Sun in the summer of 1957
(same session that produced “Lewis Boogie”) ---is one of his very best
    IMO

Best illustrated I think by its position in my JLL Top 10 for 1957

    1. Whole Lot Of Shakin’ Going On
    2. Great Balls Of Fire
    3. Mean Woman Blues
    4. All Night Long
    5. Drinkin’ Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee
    6. It'll Be Me (original single version)
    7. I’ll Keep On Loving You (aka If The World Keeps On Turning)
    8. I’m Feelin’ Sorry
    9. I Can’t Help It
    10. Honey Hush

    SMILEY LEWIS – HOW LONG
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54I2kquZPfk

Recorded in New Orleans May 20 1957.

Personnel : Smiley Lewis (vcl, gtr) Frank Fields (bs) Baby Seals (dms)
Toots Washington (pno) Dave Bartholomew (tpt) Herb Hardesty (ten sax)

First released in April 1985 on LP “Ooh La La” in France (Imperial LP 1561391)

CARL PERKINS - PUT YOUR CAT CLOTHES ON https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9drcuDWStYE

As presented in the fabulous 1982 3 LP set “Carl Perkins : The Sun
Years” one of his very best ever tracks “Put Your Cat Clothes On”. Carl recorded several takes of this number during his tenure at Sun with his
best reading coming from a session in January 1957 that also produced
the memorable “Her Love Rubbed Off”

Recorded January 30 1957 at Sun Studio 708 Union Av Memphis with
    personnel : Carl Perkins (vcl/gtr)
Jay B. Perkins (gtr) Clayton Perkins (bs) W.S Holland (dms) Jerry Lee
    Lewis (pno)

Suffice to say that I’m pretty sure my opinion on this as a GREAT number
    is almost certainly shared
by many on here since it was voted the #1 winner in the 2014 Great
    Unreleased Battle

    THE SUPREMES – HONEY HONEY
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGOuKOwlT4A

Not to be confused with the much more famous later Motown gal group of
the same name, this very male fivesome hailed from Columbus Ohio and
comprised Jay Robinson (2nd tenor bass & lead) Bobby Isbell (2nd tenor)
James Johnson (baritone/2nd tenor) Eddie Dumas (baritone) & Benny
    Collier (bass)

Recording for Johnny Vincent’s Ace label in Jackson Mississippi they are
best known for their “Just For
You And I” single also from 1957. Just as with that single The Supremes
    are also blessed here with
the piano accompaniment of Mr Huey “Piano” Smith

EDDIE BO – WALK THAT WALK
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8p3_Oxo5cI

It's #107 for the year for me, a high 8.

JOHNNY CARROLL & HIS HOT ROCKS - ROCK BABY ROCK IT https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_ApCzT2EWA

Maybe I heard it before, can't remember, but I don't like it. The
    background singers kill it IMO.

BO DIDDLEY & THE FLAMINGOS – YOU KNOW I LOVE YOU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjiBiI4Auo4

Nothing special here IMO, it's a 5. I have it in 1960 based on what you mentioned.

    THE DUBS – CONNIE
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QajcC-pgXZI

Don't like this either. They were right not to release it back then.

THE FOUR DUKES – WALKING ALONE
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1W6xsPVen-c

Once you get to '57 a lot of the group records no longer work for me,
including this one. Boring side that only rates a 4 with me.

ROSCO GORDON – CHICKEN IN THE ROUGH https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x67m69

Now you're talking! Despite the bad sound quality it's an 8 and #267 on
my 1957 list. Although I don't agree that it qualifies as unreleased. "Released" does not have to mean "issued on a record" IMO. It was
released in a movie. Records were just the most common way to release a recording, but not the only way.

JERRY LEE LEWIS – ALL NIGHT LONG https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pG8A-m9CvIM

Another 8, and it's #171 on my list for the year. Jerry Lee has several
really good unreleased things this year. Last weekend Diane heard "Live
At The Star Club" here for the first time. She was impressed with the
crowd chanting "Jerry, Jerry, Jerry" in between some of the songs.

    SMILEY LEWIS – HOW LONG
    https://www.yout.ube.com/watch?v=54I2kquZPfk

    It's good. I have it as a 6.

CARL PERKINS - PUT YOUR CAT CLOTHES ON https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9drcuDWStYE

Not my favorite unreleased Perkins number, but it's a 9 and stands at
    #90 on my 1957 list.

    THE SUPREMES – HONEY HONEY
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGOuKOwlT4A

    It's good, a high 6.

Let's see what I can come up with here:

Based on Roger's rules this would be my favorite "unreleased" track of
1957 as it was never issued on a record.

37 ¦ Fine And Mellow (Live) ¦ Billie Holiday https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKqxG09wlIA

Based on my rules THIS is my favorite unreleased track of 1957:

43 ¦ You Can Do No Wrong ¦ Carl Perkins https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZZW8ZI2SHM

    95 ¦ Where's My Baby (unreleased master) ¦ Eddie Bo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OygQgrQSvA

An even better (although just by a bit) unreleased Eddie Bo track than
    the one Roger used.

    105 ¦ Red Cadillac And A Black Moustache ¦ Warren Smith https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9IRYk1FP88

I'm surprised that this did not make Roger's list. It's been a big
favorite of mine since the mid-70s. WAY better than the released version
by Bob Luman. Robert Gordon's version is better than Luman's version
    too.

    147 ¦ Roll Over Beethoven ¦ Carl Perkins https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0Ine-N3oEc

Another great unissued Perkins track. I like the little change that he
made with the tempo. It's my second favorite version of the song. Diane
loves the Beatles version. I like it too, but it's a 7 and this Perkins
    version is an 8.

    149 ¦ I Don't Love Nobody ¦ Jerry Lee Lewis https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UazWmZs5vp0

IMO this is the best of the unreleased Jerry Lees from this year, an 8.

    166 ¦ The Way I Do ¦ Ernie K-Doe
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uau3WZxnBz0

Some say this one is 1958, but I have it in 1957. Supposedly recorded
for Herald. Excellent vocal group backing. An 8.

173 ¦ Pink Pedal Pushers (Sun Version) ¦ Carl Perkins https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XR8jm6EZwX8

CLEARLY Better than the Columbia version that came out in 1958. Another
    8 for Carl.

193 ¦ Hip Hip Hooray ¦ Eddie Bo
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6PsZJF5AGM

Pretty sure this is also unreleased.

387 ¦ If You Want To Be A Woman of Mine ¦ Cadillacs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBAdsg9ir9M

Unissued Caddys, a solid 7 IMO.

Let's hit an 11th one for good measure, and because this one is sorta
famous. Elvis singing Smiley's "One Night" with the original lyrics.

401 ¦ One Night (of Sin) ¦ Elvis Presley https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1ehTzAxo_s

Good choice. One of the best live performances ever. It was on an LP, of course, and probably too long to fit on a 45 of that era. I suspect an
original studio version was released as a single back in the 40s.

We part company on your definition of "unreleased" I'm afraid

"Unreleased" to me (and I imagine most others) means "never issued on a
record whether single,EP or album anywhere at the time until years (or
    even decades) later"

So by your reckoning that means something like Frankie Lymon's
"Fortunate Fellow" is NOT "unreleased" (as I consider it to be) because
it too was in a movie?

JERRY LEE LEWIS – ALL NIGHT LONG

It's OK I guess but the song itself isn't a particular fave of mine.
Both versions are 7's with me . I do agree Warren's version is best
(#356 on my list) with Luman at #379 and 7

    147 ¦ Roll Over Beethoven ¦ Carl Perkins https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0Ine-N3oEc

    149 ¦ I Don't Love Nobody ¦ Jerry Lee Lewis https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UazWmZs5vp0

IMO this is the best of the unreleased Jerry Lees from this year, an 8.

#417 on my klist and a 7. I rate 11 Jerry Lee performances better in
    this year

    166 ¦ The Way I Do ¦ Ernie K-Doe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uau3WZxnBz0

Some say this one is 1958, but I have it in 1957. Supposedly recorded

#192 for me in 1958 and a 7. Why do you say 1957?

173 ¦ Pink Pedal Pushers (Sun Version) ¦ Carl Perkins https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XR8jm6EZwX8

CLEARLY Better than the Columbia version that came out in 1958. Another
    8 for Carl

    ASOLUTELY it's the better version!!
    .
    #85 and an 8

193 ¦ Hip Hip Hooray ¦ Eddie Bo
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6PsZJF5AGM

Pretty sure this is also unreleased.

    Yes I have it "unreleased" #564 and a 7

387 ¦ If You Want To Be A Woman of Mine ¦ Cadillacs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBAdsg9ir9M

Unissued Caddys, a solid 7 IMO.

    #869 and a 7

Let's hit an 11th one for good measure, and because this one is sorta
famous. Elvis singing Smiley's "One Night" with the original lyrics.

401 ¦ One Night (of Sin) ¦ Elvis Presley https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1ehTzAxo_s

#1943 and a 7. Even with the "proper" lyrics comes across as somehow "artificial". Interesting to hear but ultimately not up to the
performance on the released hit single (even if it has been "sanitized")

You have at least 1943 songs on your 1957 list?

And there's at least that many songs that get a 7?

You must have over 1,000 sevens for the year. I only list things that
are at least a solid 7. The low 7's do not make my lists. The biggest
year for me is 1956 with about 750 songs. I can't believe you have like
2,000 songs from 1957 that rate a 7 or better.

When the Ernie K-Doe first turned up years ago it came from a test
pressing 45 and supposedly it was 1957. I gather there is more info now
and they are saying 1958. Do you actually have a recording date on it?

254 of these score 8 or more. That leaves 939 7's right?

Yup, that and "Love Put Me Out Of My Head" were released in the movie

We part company here I'm afraid---the fact that both songs are featured
in a movie ís irrelevant to their

and also on a promo LP. Wasn't there a promo LP for the movie?

I don't know of a promo LP for "Mister Rock 'N' Roll". Certainly never
    seen one.

Okay, so to you "released" means that the public can acquire the
recording, either on record, tape, CD, or nowadays, a digital download.
To me it means that anyone in the the public can "hear" the recording somewhere, whether it's a theatre, radio, TV, or nowadays Youtube or any
other digital source online. To me "unreleased" means that only certain
people are able to hear it, like the artists themselves, producers,
record company people, maybe friends or advisors. The general public can
    not hear it.

What about recordings that are only available on bootlegs, such as
"Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" by Springsteen, which was widely
available on a bootleg single although not made available by Columbia
for the public to own until several years later. In between it was
available on a promo only 4 or 5 song 12 inch EP.

So is it released when they sent the tape to radio stations originally,
or when it was bootlegged on a record, or when it was available on a
Columbia promo EP, or finally when it was available on the B side of one
of his hit singles that the general public could buy?

In this case everybody and his mother knew the record well from radio
and club DJ play years before it was actually on a legal record.
