    Sad Feeling ¦ Cicero Blake
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7BSJOz5QnE

Found a copy of this 45 and a bunch of other odd soul and blues 45's
from the 60s during my first trip to Chicago. It was on the West Side in
a grocery store. In between the lettuce and the toilet paper they had a
    little section with records.

Cicero went on to make a big underground hit in the 80s called "Dip My
Dipper." I also found that in Chicago. Did not know it before that.

    No, it isn't.
How do you know it's not a bootleg or a fake?
And if it really was released in 1964 how come it suddenly charted in
    1972?
You told me you heard it was "recently discovered," but to use an
expression my parents used to say..."where is it written?"

A "bootleg" is an illegal copy of an existing record pressed by someone
not authorized to do so. If that's a bootleg, then the record exists in
a legitimate copy. And what do you mean by a fake? Does that mean there
is no record and that the one shown in the listing is just a drawing of
a record or something? What would anybody gain by listing a fake? Did
someone hear you were looking into it and they wanted to fool you?

It happens occasionally. An old record gets re-released and makes the
charts. Happens a lot in the UK. Happened with "Shaving Cream" by Benny
    Bell.

You told me you heard it was "recently discovered," but to use an
expression my parents used to say..."where is it written?"

You only argument that would be possibly right is that the record in the Discogs listing is not from 1964, but is a reissue of two hits put out
by Don Julian or somebody still around from that label and that it was
pressed some time after "I Want You (Back)" was a hit in 1972. But it
certainly looks a lot more like something from 1964 than something from
    the 70s or later.

I think I remember the name David Box from when Virgil Johnson had his Internet radio station (KDAV
from Lubbock, Texas) that we discovered in 1998. I can't remember if there was one particular
song, but I don't think it was this one. I do remember that he sounded like someone, so it must
    have been Buddy.

Yes, and both sides are rip offs of earlier records. "Got Love If You
Want It" by Slim Harpo and "Misery" by the Dynamics.

a grocery store. In between the lettuce and the toilet paper they had a little section with records.

Cicero went on to make a big underground hit in the 80s called "Dip My Dipper." I also found that in Chicago. Did not know it before that.

    No, it isn't.
How do you know it's not a bootleg or a fake?
And if it really was released in 1964 how come it suddenly charted
    in
    1972?
You told me you heard it was "recently discovered," but to use an
expression my parents used to say..."where is it written?"
    ;
A "bootleg" is an illegal copy of an existing record pressed by
    someone
not authorized to do so. If that's a bootleg, then the record exists
    in
a legitimate copy. And what do you mean by a fake? Does that mean
    there
is no record and that the one shown in the listing is just a drawing
    of
a record or something? What would anybody gain by listing a fake? Did
someone hear you were looking into it and they wanted to fool you?
    ------------
I mean the kind of thing Joe Pecoraro used to do, like an artist makes
up a label and has a fake 45 rpm record of the 5 Sharps "Stormy
Weather."  I don't know the right word for it, evidently.

And why would someone go to the trouble of doing that for a record that
    is not in any demand?
    -----------
    To *create* a demand.

"The last of the 50's type music, perhaps they didn't know how to
    change musically with the times"
"has a good garage pop sound to it"
This is Arthur Conley who had a monster hit with
    'Sweet Soul Music' in 1967.

    Bruce Clark & The Q's - Went To Chinatown [Hull 762;b-side;NYC] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9dbITFXMGM
The vocal melody has, for me, an appealing eerie tension.
"Born in 1942 and raised in Brooklyn, Bruce Michael Clarke has had
a career in music spanning a lifetime. Ever since he began singing
harmonies with his childhood friends in the hallways of the
Red Hook Housing Projects, music has been a driving force in his
life. His first record in his own name was with Bruce & the Q’s.
It was also his last. Shortly thereafter he decided to focus on
producing...Over the years Bruce has owned and been involved with
    several labels..."

    "Jean sounded like Ruth Brown."
"great medium tempo r'n'r in the Dion mould from the pen of
    Ernie Maresca"
"4 years ago I found this song on 45rpm at a 2nd hand store in
    Belgium!"

Kenny and The Fiends - Moon Shot [Dot 16596] (instro) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IH3zhNeMm9Q
"the guitar 'zip-string/shredding' effect is obtained by gliding the
edge of a thin guitar pick over most of the length of one of the
wound strings such as the low 'E' string"

The Paramonts - Shedding Teardrops [Ember 1099;b-side] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtDkC42AWxw
correct spelling; out of Washington DC

The Delmonicos - Until You [Musictone 6122;;NYC] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4BqlReLAAA
    from Harlem NY
    Joe Cariati (Lead)
    Victor Rodriguez (First Tenor)
    Nick DiBona (Second Tenor)

    Gary Knight (Bass)

The Devotions - Snow White [Roulette 4580;b-side] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H39CR3-Oex4
from Astoria, Queens, NY; formed in 1960
Al Vieco (baritone) was still with the group in 2011
the group is most famous for its 1964 charting hit, "Rip Van Winkle"
"All the doo-wop groups were screwed the moment the British Invasion
    hit."

Florian Monday And His Mondos - Rip It, Rip It Up [Realm 007;;NYC] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mHijgOaGgo

Okay, here is something more significant. In 2002 the Kent (Ace UK)
label issued a CD called "Don Julian & The Larks: The Jerk: The Money Recordings." And "I Want You (Back)" does appear on this CD. It's
track #21. The CD includes recordings made for the Money label from
1964 thru 1967. So we have at least some proof that the song was
    *recorded* in the mid-60s.
My feeling is that the record on Discogs is something Don Julian
released in 1972 (or possibly 71). If I'm proven wrong I'll admit it.
I always do. But it's weird to me that there's no other mention of it
    being released in 1964.

    THE TWILIGHTS – Shipwreck
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQp5_VqOfM0

I dislike this one the most of anything here. Tedious.

I'm sure you will not be surprised that I don't agree with that at all.

Liked this one since Steve Solomon (remember him?) turned me on to it
some years ago. I just found a 2003 post on here where I thanked him for
    it

Liked this one since Steve Solomon (remember him?)

Not directly, but Diane used to mention him.

And part of what Diane called us, 'The Califiornia Steve's'. I don't
remember who the other one was.

    Duh !! Of course.

I even got him, thru Norm,  to sign his "What Was The First Rock N Roll
Record ' as a gift for my brother.

A couple of phone conversations way back and some correspondence via the newsgroup sums up my direct encounters with Steve. IIRC on one of my
California jaunts the Mariano Brothers were gonna set up a face to face
with him but it never materialized (nor did I ever meet Norm K face to
    face only by phone)

BTW he has a whole bunch of videos posted on YT
