I have a question about the Leiber & Stoller song "Love Me."
In their book, as I remember it (and I admit it's been a while since I
read it) L&S said that when Elvis had a hit with "Hound Dog" his people
asked them what else they could send over. L&S didn't think much of
Elvis's recording of "Hound Dog" so they sent over "Love Me," a c&w
parody that they didn't really like, almost as a joke.
But... Jimmie Rodgers Snow had a version of "Love Me" out in January
1955 (five months after the Willie & Ruth original). Elvis toured with
Snow that year, while Snow would have been promoting that single.
Doesn't it make more sense that Elvis heard the song through Snow in
1955 than that L&S introduced it to him as a joke in 1956?
