• Doo-Wop Documentary

From bbug@21:1/5 to All on Mon Sep 23 00:32:38 2024
I just stumbled onto a PBS documentary Called "Heart & Soul," about a
third of the way through the 1 1/2 hour show. It documents the early
days of the Doo-Wop vocal groups and is terrific with a jarring
    exception.

    https://www.imdb.com/title/tt13915868/

If you can put up with the nauseating rendition of "You Send Me" by
Phoebe Snow, the rest more than makes up for that with footage and
discussions with members of many of the great groups.

As far as I can tell, it will be on 3 local PBS stations, including
WNET,on October 18, at 8 PM. I've already marked my calendar. Well worth checking with the local PBS stations.

I think I've seen this. It was okay.

Is this the clip they showed?

I guess it was too soulful for you, Bill. Nothing wrong with it IMO.
Much more of a black sound than the Cooke was. I knew her, she was a semi-regular at Relic when I worked there. Her younger sister came in
    more than she did.

That was not the clip used in the documentary. It was better than the
    one used.

    "I think I've seen this."

It would have had to be fairly recently. It was first available for
broadcast in June of this year.

    Nope,not really for me either

Aretha nails the femme version on this one but Sam still has THE "You
    Send Me"

Sam's is just okay. It's a wimpy pop record if you ask me. Diane doesn't
like it much either. I give it a low 6. It would be lower but his pretty
voice just gets it over the line to a low 6.

    My Sam Cooke favorites:

    1. Bring It Home To Me
    2. That's Where It's At
    3. Good Times
    4. Chain Gang
    5. Another Saturday Night
    6. Twistin' The Night Away
    7. Touch The Hem Of His Garment
    8. Wonderful World
    9. Having A Party
    10. Shake
    11. Only Sixteen
    12. Sugar Dumpling
    13. Jesus Gave Me Water
    14. Cupid
    15. That's Heaven To Me
    16. Shake, Rattle And Roll
    17. Meet Me At Mary's Place
    18. Somebody Have Mercy
    19. Baby, Baby, Baby
    20. Ain't That Good News
    21. Sad Mood
    22. No One (Can Ever Take Your Place)

The Cooke version is vastly superior and *more soulful*. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wU4mulO8yn8

This might explain your bias, Bruce.

Never heard Mavis Staples' version? It's pretty intense.

    What bias?

There were lots of recording artists who came in there and some of them
    made records that sucked dick.

Phoebe Snow was born in 1950 and died in 2011, so how is she relevant to
the story of early vocal groups?
