the helm of course on a song for Atlantic that I heard first in the
Elvis version circa 1957 or so. I didn’t hear the Drifters original
until much later---and when I did it became my #1 fave record of 1953 a position its held ever since

FANTASTIC revival of the old Fran Warren semi-standard from 1947 with
the marvellous Willie Winfield doing the lead honors.Recorded for the
Bruce label (don’t some of these labels have awful names?) it’s since become a doowop classic---as it has been with me since I first heard it

Likewise The Checkers here do a great job updating the 1941 Bunny
Berigan song (made most famous by our own Vera Lynn in 1942).With a
whole wad of singles to their credit at this point their latest for
the King label was added to the long list.

BTW You’ll NEVER see a bluebird over the white cliffs of Dover--unless
it’s maybe the Dover in Delaware---‘tis a North American bird!! We don’t have bluebirds in England 😊

GOOD LOVIN’ – THE CLOVERS

One group that was truly unstoppable at this time was The Clovers with
their output for Atlantic yielding solid hit after solid hit to which
“Good Lovin’” was no exception reaching #2 r&b

One of their best from the veteran group delivering to Big Bess and

One of the top New Orleans acts of the day makes an appearance here
with one of their best ever records on the Imperial label. One of the

Chicago backed by Red Holloway & his boys recorded in September 1953 and released a month later. Song co-written by Alan Freed. Of course it was!

Released on Federal in June 1953 this was the Royals record that
introduced them to the Billboard r&b chart where they deservedly scored
a #6 hit with one of their very best pre-Midnighters recordings

“Baby It’s You” recorded May 1953 as the first release not just by The Spaniels—but first on the just set up Vee Jay label. When the record
turned out so popular that the new label couldn’t cope with demand distribution was farmed out to the (then) more established Chance
label.The group remade this song in 1958

A milestone record in several ways---one being it was a pioneering r&b
record that crossed over to the Billboard POP chart (in 1954)---reaching
#14. Released on George Goldner’s new Rama label in mid-1953 it
eventually rose to #2 on the Billboard r&b chart as well as making the
pop chart (as above).And (from my point of view) it made minor
history---in becoming one of the very first American r&b group records
to get a UK release (here it was on Columbia)

that the topside here---the much revered by many soaring “Golden

I don't buy Swing Time 331 for 1952. The first Swing Time review in 1953
is #322 on Jan. 17. No way #331 could have come out in 1952. As for Roxy
I never knew about it, and it does say 1952 in Kreiter's book, but it
has a different flip side than the Swing Time issue, so it might not be
the same recording. It also adds the word "Ill" to the title. If it
turns out that it's the same recording of course I'll move it to 1952.
The flip on Roxy is "Goodbye My Love."

This video presents it as the same version, but I have my doubts. It's
not the record being played, it's something with studio talk and great
sound quality while the "Goodbye My Love" video from the 78 sounds like
a cylinder from like 1892. That same version with the studio talk is on
another video with the Swing Time CD Box Set pictured.

I suspect that they made a scan of the Roxy 78 and played the track from
the box set on the video.

Okay, just got the answer from Unca Marvy's Serenaders article.

In 1953, Los Angeles' Swing Time label purchased a truckload of masters
from small Detroit labels and the Musketeers songs were released on
Swing Time in April. There were a few changes: "Musketeers" was
misspelled as "Muskateers", "Goodbye My Love" was re-titled "Deep In My
Heart" (both phrases are part of the lyrics), and they straightened out
the pronouns to agree with the words: "Love Me Til Your Dying Day".
Finally, they used different takes of the songs, and "Dying Day" now had
an instrumental bridge that was around twice as long as on the Roxy
release. The Serenaders were unaware of this release.

So the Swing Time releases were different takes of the same 2 songs that
were issued on Roxy.

that the topside here---the much revered by many soaring “Golden Teardrops” ballad on doesn’t do that much for me and I much prefer the rockin’ “Carried Away” (both led by Sollie McElroy) on the Chance label

Yes my memory at fault I seem to remember seeing this listed (Ruppli?)
as "Jimmy Witherspoon & The Lamplighters" but on the Federal record
label it is just credited to "Jimmy Witherspoon with Quartet"
