The latest ROOTS ROCK RADIO is archived at the link below until the
27th. Due to our annual two-week pledge drive, I had to do a lot more
talking than usual. So I had less time for music. I also played mainly familiar chart hits in the hope of garnering more pledges. (To a certain extent, it worked.)

    1. TEQUILA, The Champs

Here's how it sits in my 1958 instrumentals Top 10

    1. Rebel Rouser Duane Eddy – 1958
    2. Rumble Link Wray - 1958
    3. Tequila Champs – 1958
    4. Ramrod Duane Eddy – 1958
    5. Manhattan Spiritual Reg Owen – 1958
    6. Guitar Boogie Shuffle Virtues – 1958
    7. Cannon Ball Duane Eddy - 1958
    8..Moovin’ And Groovin’ Duane Eddy – 1958
    9. Detour Duane Eddy - 1958
    10.. Poor Boy Royaltones - 1958

    4. BARBARA-ANN, The Regents

Song revived beautifully by The Beach Boys several years later

    6. HUSHABYE, The Mystics

White Brooklyn group that took this song into the US Top 20. Liked it
back then and still do today

    9. JAILHOUSE ROCK, Elvis Presley

Gotta be his best song to come from one of his movies

    14. REBEL ‘ROUSER, Duane Eddy

Check out #1 on this list to see where this one sits in my 1958
    instrumentals list

    15. STORMY WEATHER, The Spaniels

Sits at #13 in my "Fave Top 20 By A Vocal Group - 1958" posted here
    yesterday

    19. DON’T KNOCK THE ROCK, Bill Haley & His Comets

Loved this movie when it came out getting my first glimpse of the great
    Little Richard in action

    20. SILHOUETTES, The Rays

Great double sider here b/w "Daddy Cool" Some folk prefer the flipside
but I always gave the nod to "Silhouettes".

    21. COULD THIS BE MAGIC, The Dubs

Sits at #17 in my "Fave Top 20 By A Vocal Group - 1957" posted here ten
    days ago

    23. THAT’LL BE THE DAY, Buddy Holly & The Crickets

Has to be one of the greatest examples of an artist releasing a much
better version of the same song they did as an earlier release

    24. YAKETY YAK, The Coasters

Sits at #4 in my "Fave Top 20 By A Vocal Group - 1958" posted here
    yesterday

    25. TALLAHASSEE LASSIE, Freddy Cannon

A complete misfire for me---a record I never could stand nor anything
else by this artist, sorry (tho with one exception--I did quite like his
    "Buzz Buzz A Diddle It"

    26. THIS MAGIC MOMENT, The Drifters

Sits at #13 in my "Fave Top 20 By A Vocal Group - 1960" posted here a
    week ago

    29. IN THE STILL OF THE NITE, The Five Satins

I imagine this one will sit Top Five when I get around to compiling
the inevitable 1956 entry in the "Fave Top 20 By A Vocal Group" series

Never released here as a single it did however show up in a little seen
UK movie production "Sweet Beat" in 1959 that featured several American
record stars of the period (all from Al Silver's Herald/Ember outfit)
and included the Satins doing this number (tho only FOUR of them
actually show up :-). Here's the YT clip

    35. SURFIN’ U.S.A, The Beach Boys

One of my very favorite cases of a favorite act "revamping" an older
song into a brand new (and excellent) number

    36. RED RIVER ROCK, Johnny & The Hurricanes

Here's how "Red River Rock" sits in my 1959 instrumentals Top 10

    1. Peter Gunn Duane Eddy - 1959
    2. 40 Miles Of Bad Road Duane Eddy - 1959
    3.Teen Beat Sandy Nelson - 1959
