Sombre doom-laden guitar instrumental courtesy of Mr Link Wray & The
Raymen on Cadence The story goes that Archie Bleyer hated the record and
was only persuaded to issue it by his step daughter. Originally titled “Oddball”
the title “Rumble” was apparently bestowed on it by Phil Everly.Charted
at
#16 BB pop/#11 BBr&b. Issued on London in UK non-charting
3. TEQUILA – THE CHAMPS

Los Angeles based outfit with constantly changing membership with one of
those
rare instances of a “B” side turning out to be the gigantic hit. (“Train To Nowhere” was the initial “A” side). After deejays flipped the record “Tequila” went to #1 on both Billboard charts. On Challenge in US it appeared on London in UK and charted at #5.
4. CANNON BALL – DUANE EDDY

Co-penned with Lee Hazlewood the insistent “Cannon Ball” restored Duane back to the Top 20 in US reaching #15 BBpop and #22BB r&b. In the UK
on London label Duane charted with this one early in 1959 at no #22
5. GUITAR BOOGIE SHUFFLE – THE VIRTUES

Philadelphia based instrumental group formed by Frank Virtuoso with a
number based on Arthur Smith’s famous “Guitar Boogie”. The Virtues disc originally appeared on Sure label in 1958 and on Hunt in early 1959
where it charted at #5 BBpop and #27 BB r&b. Issued on HMV in UK in 1959
but did not chart since it was covered by UK guitarist Bert Weedon (of
later original "Apache" fame) on Top Rank who took his cover to #10 on
charts here
6. MANHATTAN SPIRITUAL – REG OWEN

British big bandleader with a tune I always liked. Issued first in US on Palette it scored a #10 BB pop hit. Release in UK came later (early
1959) on Pye International with the number reaching #20 on UK chart

Although not released on a single or soundtrack LP until 1959 the theme
from the
hit NBC series “Peter Gunn” did appear on an RCA EP of music from the
hit show
in September 1958. The TV show never played here in UK (not where I
lived anyway) but a single of the theme appeared here on RCA in mid-1959

Famed jazz drummer who’d been around for yonks and played in the bands
of loads of big names in the business including Jelly Roll Morton,Benny Carter,Cab Calloway and of course Louis Armstrong (a highspot of “The
Glenn Miller Story” movie is the sequence where Cozy playing with Satch engages in a fierce drum battle royal with Gene Krupa).1958 saw Cozy
take the hit drum instrumental “Topsy-Part II” on NY city’s Love label
to #3 BBpop and #1 BBr&b. In UK the record appeared on London but did
not chart

by Fats comes from a session at J&M Studio in New Orleans that also

“Boots Brown” was the secret identity of jazzman trumpeter Shorty Rogers who put a bunch of guys together to form “The Blockbusters” and cut the “Tequila”-derived “Cerveza” for RCA reaching #23 on the BB pop chart. Released on RCA too in UK but did not chart despite Some decent airplay
