Fortunately, competition in some of these is fierce,
what with Margaret Price on RCA and Elly Ameling
in what looks to be a promising new SACD, whatever
that is. I know it costs more.
Most of these "concert arias" are so wonderful,
even some of the early ones, they could be sneaked
into "Figaro" or Don Giovanni" and fit right in.
Just try "Vado, ma dove" K. 583. I wish this
went on for about ten more minutes--have you
ever thought that while listening to Wagner?
Kiri Te Kanawa (Decca) and Price are both
good in slightly different ways (KTK more delicate, MP
more dramatic). But though my Ameling cassette is
long worn out, I think she does it best.
You Mozart fans: grab this Decca set before it
disappears. (And yes, it has complete texts
and translations).
