Par for the course -- this is what pretty much
    most contemporary "composers" do nowadays.

Naming a work of music "the most beautiful
ugly sound in the world" is great marketing!

To be accurate, Dan, "5: 4 It's the most beautiful ugly sound in the world." is the name of the YouTube channel, not the name of the piece. The piece by Finnessy is called "n". The other works in the channel can be found here:

I like Finnissy's music by and large. If one finds it uniquely off-putting. one needs to get out more. There's a lot of much "uglier" stuff around these days.

That's not exactly a comforting thought.

By putting quotes around "uglier" I mean to imply that I probably wouldn't find ugly much that you would; rather that while I would find much of it to be relatively fragmented and abrasive sonically (and thus ugly to some/many) I also would find much
of it to be of musical value. Varese anyone? BTW, that doesn't mean that some of what is ugly by your standards isn't just sheer flaming junk.

I like Varèse, but onlyin Chailly's version with the RCO.
Chailly gives the impression that all the notes somehow belong together and express more than themselves.
That impression is reinforced when you watch Chailly conduct.

I think Varese has a lot to offer...imo the Poeme Electronique is a masterpiece.

Finissey's a mixed bag, some solid results but doesn't always impress.

This sounds more musical than Finissey:
