Arte, after receiving numerous death threats and having received offers of sexual favours, all-expenses paid holidays in Bermuda and other downright bribes from The Gramophone, have decided to celebrate the 80th birthday of Sir John Eliot Gardiner,
possibly the worst conductor since Daniel Harding.
The latest is part of a concert given by him with the Camerata Salzburg (sans ophicleide) and the ladies of the Monteverdi Choir, plus an actor and two actresses, of Mendelssohn's incidental music to a Midsummer Night's Dream. The actor and actresses
provide cues from the German text, which is very effective, and the soloists are from the choir. Everybody appears to be thoroughly enjoying themselves, especially the soloists. Well worth watching.
