If you've ever wanted to try out digital voice on HF, check out the
upcoming FreeDV Activity Day!
Posted: 26 Jan 2022 02:57 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sdiz5t/if_youve_ever_wanted_to_try_out_digital_voice_on/
Im one of the maintainers of the FreeDV project and have been working on getting more activity on the bands as of late. Back in early November, we
had our first Activity Day and it resulted in the most simultaneous FreeDV users in quite a while, so we figured wed make it a quarterly thing from
now on.
Speaking of making it quarterly, the next Activity Day is going to be from February 19th at 9AM PST (1700Z) through February 20th at 8:59AM (1659Z). Theres no limitation as to what FreeDV mode is used (these days, typically 700C/D/E and 2020) and definitely no obligation to log or submit anything
after the event. Think of it more like the monthly JS8Call QSO Party than anything. :)
For reference, heres where FreeDV can usually be found:
80 meters: 3.625, 3.643 or 3.693 MHz
40 meters: 7.177 MHz
20 meters: 14.236 MHz
17 meters: 18.118 MHz
15 meters: 21.313 MHz
12 meters: 24.933 MHz
10 meters: 28.330 or 28.720 MHz
Of course, those arent the only places that it can be found. Its typically allowed anywhere SSB voice can be used (minus 60 meters), at least in the
US anyway. The QSO Finder and PSK Reporter are great sources for finding contacts, whether during the event or any other time.
Anyway, wed definitely welcome more participation. If you have issues
setting up or using the application (or SM1000 if you happen to have one), definitely leave a comment here or on the digitalvoice reflector and I or others can help resolve those.

Radio Tower Interference

This post is in relation to me gaming and streaming. Can’t find any help anywhere else and everyone seems to be pretty helpful on here. Recently
moved next to a radio tower. Using elgato HD60s and streaming from PS4 to surface book 3, everything is hard wired & Im using the elgato chat link
cable. Never had this issue before I moved here but now my teammates in my voice chat are picking up radio commercials over my voice when I game. This never happens unless I’m using my Elgato to stream while using my PS4. I’m not using Bluetooth in any way. Anyway to fix? Thanks in advance.
Edit: You guys have by far been the most helpful subreddit out there. Thank y’all so much! submitted by /u/RolandxNtheDeep

20m stealth

Lets say someone was in the military and lived in military housing.
Military housing does not like people stringing up long wire dipoles. I
have a stealth 40m antenna in a horizontal V pattern on my roof that works great but that leaves me no were to put up a 20m antenna. Outside of a
magnetic loop what would yall suggest I do for 20m?
EDIT:
Thank you to all concerned about me abiding by base regulation, but I am
not on base.
I am however in what is called off base housing and their rules are very similar to HOA rules stating things like no unsightly things hanging off
poles or out of trees. Nothing about radio is stated in the books though. submitted by /u/mindwarp903

Let's talk antennas, ground planes in particular.
Posted: 26 Jan 2022 09:06 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sdasoq/lets_talk_antennas_ground_planes_in_particular/
I am currently playing with a relatively resonant 20m vertical made from buddipole parts. I say relatively resonant as I havent put the analyser on
it to check. The vertical element is roughly 17 and the radials are a touch shorter at roughly 168" run in a downward slope to fiberglass stakes
keeping tue ends 3-4 off the ground. What it may been off of resonance the tuner easily cleans up.. It works well as is proof from the signal reports
and logs.
So lets say since the solar cycle is improving I want to play with 10m and
see what I can do. I was some time ago given an old CB whip that had been
cut back for 10m. If I replace the 17 element with this whip, or even if I shortened the telescoping whip to the right (same) length, what would the effect of the long radials (really counterpoise I guess as they are not grounded) be? I know shortened radials will raise the take off angle, what
will the effect from the long radials / counterpoise be? I know I could
fold the wires back to length, I was just curious what differences effects
I would see leaving them long? submitted by /u/FlyFreak

Planning an 80m receive antenna on 35' mast
Posted: 26 Jan 2022 07:46 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sd8xz6/planning_an_80m_receive_antenna_on_35_mast/
hello, /r/amateurradio !
Ive been a licensed tech since i was a kid, but only sporadically active in
the hobby. I could use some guidance, perhaps, on planning my first HF
antenna.
It should be noted, im really mostly interested in receiving right now. I
love tuning around 80/40/20/10 and the physical / audio experience of it
all. Im currently using a random length of wire shoved into the SO239 on
the back of my FT450D. As a tech, i only really have tx privs on 10, and im
not chomping at the bit about it.
Im planning on erecting a 35 collapsible mast in my back yard. Id either
like to feed it with RG8X or RG6, but Im open to other ideas as well. The
run would be approximately 80ft from shack desk to mast tip. Ive also
ordered a balun kit from amazon. My #1 goal is to simply reduce QRM from
stuff inside the house, and get my aerial ... in the air.
The mast site is relatively flat, but 10 north starts a significant hill
(with some nice tall trees at the top...). The property line is 50ft east,
and 75ft to the north/south/west. The hill is unfortunate, but there are otherwise few overhead impediments.
Im planning on building the balun kit as 1:1, and using ~70 of #20AWG on
each leg to make an inverted V. Ive got a hank of paracord here to use for
guy and element tie-off.
Am I forgetting anything? For my mast, is there a better balun / element /
feed configuration? submitted by /u/warpeggio

Electronics Course and Kit recommendations

I posted a question a couple days ago asking for recommendations for a
basic electronics course. One of the suggestions that really interested me
was to get a learning kit, like Arduino. It was mentioned that Arduino
includes a fair amount of learning coding, which I’m not really interested in.
Has anyone got a recommendation for a learning kit? Anyone had experience
with the Charles Platt books and kits? For example, "Make: Electronics" submitted by /u/kilo_fife

NMO roof vs fender performance
Posted: 26 Jan 2022 10:32 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sdcuc5/nmo_roof_vs_fender_performance/
I was running a Tram 1180 on a NMO fender mount on my 2020 Silverado temporarily until I got my new antenna (Larsen NMO 2/70SH) in. Out of curiosity, I put the 2/70sh on my fender mount and it seems to perform
pretty rough compared to my 1180. To be fair, its a compromised antenna vs
the 1180 which is a 1/2 wave on VHF and a 5/8 over 5/8 on UHF. My 1180
however keeps hitting the parking deck at work, so I needed something
smaller. The end goal has always been to drill a hole and mount an antenna,
but if I wont see much improvement of my 2/70sh on the roof vs on the
fender, Ill keep the fender mount. How much of a performance increase can I reasonably expect on the NMO roof mount? submitted by

Can't Seem to Find the Packet Cable for the Icom ID-880H
Posted: 26 Jan 2022 01:04 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sdgdzw/cant_seem_to_find_the_packet_cable_for_the_icom/
I have an Icom ID-880H that I want to use for packet radio. Mostly APRS and Winlink. Id also like to try FT8 if it can handle it. I cant remember if
thats effectively an SDR only mode or not.
I have the programming cable for the device. Its USB on one end 3.5mm jack
on the other. Thats just for programming the device with something like
CHIRP. Its not for actual packet radio.
On the back side of the unit there is a separate round connector
labeled "packet" and I dont have that connector. Google searches turn up
empty as they all point me to the programming cable, which isnt the same
thing.
Depending upon your — eh — "vintage" the round connector will remind you of an s-video connector, a PS/2 connector, or possibly a C64-style IEC serial
bus connector. Thats the cable I dont have. I want go from that "packet"
port to either a Mobilinkd TNC3 or a USB sound card in on a Pi running Direwolf.
Can someone point in the direction of the correct cable(s) please?

What are your thoughts on this liquid metal antenna?

Have you heard of the reconfigurable monopole antenna made with gallium? I think its pretty interesting.
"Simulated results show a reconfigurable bandwidth with S11 < -20 dB of
more than 1.8 GHz is possible. The large band of operational frequencies
show that stretchable LM antennas can meet the need of applications
requiring reconfigurable antennas"

Baofeng UV 13 Pro - Any info available?
Posted: 26 Jan 2022 02:28 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sdibgd/baofeng_uv_13_pro_any_info_available/
I recently saw a new Baofeng (UV13 Pro) pop up on AliExpress. It supposedly puts out 10 watts, has 999 programmable channels, and can be had with all accessories and shipped for a hair under $50. However, there do not seem to
be any reviews or details yet. Doesn’t look to be Chirp supported yet and
no OEM software listed on Baofeng tech.
I’m looking for a cheap backup HT and am attracted to the higher power and 999 memories. No indication as to wether the memories can be broken down
into banks, etc.
Anybody seen or heard about this model yet? submitted by /u/DCA1951
