I couldnt think of a better title. I am an engineering undergrad in India,
our college recently established its first HaM club, none of us apart from
one or two( who were the founders) know anything about HaM let alone have a license, we want to learn and try to be established a new community of HaMs
in our city and if possible our state. Anyone here, who has suggestions for
us to get started and move forward into achieving our goal. Any
suggestions, advice or any form of expertise is more than welcome.

    Wrecked my 7610

    Posted: 30 Jan 2022 10:06 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sgewlr/wrecked_my_7610/

Well, it happened to me. A bit of fatigue from WFD, and Im still not sure
    what went wrong.

24 hr prior to WFD I got a new homebrew 80m OCFD up using 2x ft240-43s and 14AWG solid enameled wire. Fast forward to 10pm EST Im on 80m and decide to jump to js8call. On freq, tune the radio, good tune, and I know it should
have tuned fine, my antenna is cut long as was evident when I first checked
the vSWR of the antenna. Found a station hit reply and the radio made a
weird relay click like sound. Immediate halted tx, and the radios fan came
on. Oh boy, it smelled like I let out the magic smoke. Checked - tuner indicated on, ALC was good, oops 100w of power, I dont ever op digital with 100w, but surely the radio should have been able to handle that.

Photo is of the tuner board just before the so-239. Where else would you
check for damage or would it be fair to think its fairly isolated to the
spot that burned? Also, what portion of the final(?) would you call this?

My guess as to what happened is part of a problem with the method of tuning
our antennas. With a balun, it may report a perfect match, but as soon as
you put power into the system, the characteristics of the balun change. I
have a tendency to watch my swr meter when I tx, and just prior I was on
ssb on 80m, and know that at the 100w ssb, the swr meter was pegged at 1:1, albeit the exchange for WFD is breezy and the rf power out doesnt remain at
    a constant peak.

I love my 7610 and am considering fixing it myself. Im competent with
soldering and SMDs as a prior job I would repair computer motherboards. Ive already found the service manual, however, if the consensus is that there
is trouble back at the finals, then Ill likely just send it into icom. Its
a good excuse to get the burned-in LCD replaced at the same time as well. I
can dig up a photo of my balun too if anyone wants to see that as part of theorizing what happened.
    carnage: https://imgur.com/a/aRfv70h

TL;DR - Put 100w of js8call into my 7610, and while it was tuned, it still
blew part of the tuner board. Sadness ensued. submitted by /u/MrDrMrs

Built my first radio. Completely forgot about the "magical" crystal and the integrated circuit. Thankfully there was no smoke. Had to double check

What should I know and/or where can I find info about requirements to

    FT-70 static unplugged

    Posted: 30 Jan 2022 01:18 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sgj93k/ft70_static_unplugged/

This is odd, I was looking for signals for Winter Field Day and on the
FT-70d I heard something on 146.465. Just static, 3/4 of the signal bar on
the bottom. Now when I plug it in, I dont hear it or barely hear it. On
another radio I do not hear anything (a large portable 80w radio) so is
this some glitch in the squelch of Yaesu ft-70d? Oddly enough it only
happens inside one room so perhaps it is just an odd interference.

I am designing a diplexer for 2 meter / 70 cm. I am planing on using it to split an antenna between a receiver and a transmitter. The tx power will be
5 watts. The one question I have is, will -5bBm going into a receiver hurt
it or desensitize it? submitted by /u/WeGoodHomie

Cannot access Florida SARnet! Can anyone help?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2022 10:17 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sgf5jf/cannot_access_florida_sarnet_can_anyone_help/

Hey everyone, so Im trying to access SARnet because it sounds super fun,
but it just isnt working. Im starting to think that its because my only
radio is a 5 watt Baofeng uv-5r, but I do have it hooked up to a huge
outdoor antenna fairly high up. Im trying to access it via the K4AG
repeater on 444.600, since Im pretty close to it, a little under 16 miles
away. What puzzles me is that I can hit repeaters around the same distance
away super easily, but not this one. I have the correct CTCSS tones
programmed, but it just isnt working. Any help? Is there some SARnet requirement that Im not understanding? Could my radio just not be powerful enough? submitted by /u/MaxBattleLizard
