What to start with?
Posted: 02 Feb 2022 04:11 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sj4dz5/what_to_start_with/
A bit of background on me. I was FDC in the Army and was the RTO. I enjoyed
my time using radios and would like to get into ham radios. I currently
live in Richmond VA and I have worked as an electronics technician and a controls engineer. After February I will be studying and taking the
licensing exams, but I want to have a good understanding of what to get
Ive see this question asked in the forum and for starters I would like to communicate locally. Im sure there are repeaters around RVA and was going
to ask the local club when I join, but thats for a later time. Further down
the line Id like to branch out but right now just locally.
So, for a $250-300 budget. What should I get? Looking for portable at the moment, home base for when I branch out later. I dont really want to start
with the Baefongs only to replace them in a few months.
Any help or guidance would be appreciated.
Thank you! submitted by /u/No_Cook_9092

Let's revisit the vertical antenna discussion.
Posted: 02 Feb 2022 01:10 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sj000g/lets_revisit_the_vertical_antenna_discussion/
Ok lets assume we are talking about a portable rig, so 100W max output
mostly on ssb currently, maybe digit modes in the future.
Putting together resonant vertical antennas for 10, 12, 15, 17, 20m and possibly coil loaded for 40m. What is the minimum gauge of wire you would recomend/use for radials whether grounded or isolated. Ive heard a lot
of "use what ya got and see what happens". I am all for experimentation,
but was curious if there was a "rule of thumb", or what the tribal
knowledge was on the subject. submitted by /u/FlyFreak

Is it worth buying a TS-590sg?
Posted: 02 Feb 2022 12:22 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/siyuiz/is_it_worth_buying_a_ts590sg/
Not that Im set on buying a new HF rig, but Ive had an IC-7300 for a few
years since getting back into the hobby and wouldnt mind a change. Ive
always loved Kenwood, since my only other HF rig was a TS-140S in the late
80s. I dont doubt th 590 is a solid performer, but its been put for several years now, and Im wondering if Kenwood has a replacement in the works. From what I can tell, it does everything my 7300 can do, with the exception of a waterfall display, which seems to be pretty standard these days (I know
that I can use my RSP2 as a pan adapter though).
Just wondering how good of a value it is these days. I know the Yarsu FT10
is a great radio too, but Ive always been a big fan of Kenwoods quality and aesthetics. submitted by /u/SonicResidue

Coax Switch Use

Can I use a coax switch to connect two different radios to a single antenna?
I have an FM radio and a rtl-sdr, and one j-pole antenna. The antenna is outside, the shack is in the basement. I have used the antenna with each
device successfully. However, Ive never incorporated a switch. And if i
can, are there any recommendations on a switch?
I have searched this sub but could not find an answer. Though Im sure it
has been asked before. Please point me to a previous post if possible. submitted by /u/winston198451

When military X jams GPS, how does their own GPS work? Or doesn't it? Is
there spread-spectrum multihopping super-GPS they have for themselves, or

Speed for a beginner
Posted: 01 Feb 2022 05:38 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sibvjw/speed_for_a_beginner/
Hello! I’m very new to this but eager to learn. What speed would you recommend for a beginner? I’ve been reading about Koch Method and it’s used on LCWO website. Let’s say I put character speed to 30 wpm. What should I
use for the effective speed? I used eff. speed 15 wpm but it was too fast
for me after a few lessons so I switched to 11 wpm. What would be the recommendation? After a few lessons I noticed that I started memorizing the pieces positioned on the keyboard instead of the letters themselves. Would
you recommend writing them down on the paper instead and then typing into
the system (LCWO) to check the accuracy?
Thank you in advance for any tips. submitted by /u/OmertaHere

I picked up a few resonators for HF mobile, but there are some odd ones in there, included are: 80, 75, 40, 20, 15 and 10m. What are the oddballs for?
Posted: 01 Feb 2022 06:59 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sidlfz/i_picked_up_a_few_resonators_for_hf_mobile_but/
So Im still pretty new so .. go easy on me.
I think that:
75 is sorta the "top end" of 80, but theyre basically the same.
Ive been on bandplans.com and I dont really get what 15 is for though.
10 is a pretty narrow band mostly CW and APRS but I havent had an antenna
to use it with before.
Edit: Oh hey, I found the wiki about the 15m band. Doy. Anyways, it talks
about how its a dynamite intercontinental ham band during the day. Which, k cool, but like .. the resonator/antenna I have will be like 10 off the
ground tops. This has to be NVIS territory, right? What kind of distances
can I reasonably expect out of these resonators? I havent done anything
with HF mobile before.
Edit, part deux: 10 METERS isnt 10 MHz. Doy. I knew that. submitted by /u/ur_canadian_brudda
