Options for packet radio at base station?
Posted: 03 Feb 2022 03:49 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sjyaab/options_for_packet_radio_at_base_station/
Looking for suggestions. I have really good APRS digipeater and Igate
coverage in my area. My equipment would be an old Icom 2000, a classic
Diamond Dual Band about 30 ft off the ground. Interface will be a Mobilinkd
tnc (which I own) or Pi TNC (I will buy soon), with cables made by Hamade parts. Pi would run headless.
Thoughts so far are:
Winlink Gateway, we have very little coverage, but looking at their site
the requirements look pretty intimidating. They dont really list what
equipment they require.
Old School BBS. Why not? I tend to be a prepper and would like a way to post/communicate via another means aside from APRS if possible. Suggestion
on a BBS software?
Open to suggestions or experiences. TYIA. submitted by

Greetings! Hopefully this is the right sub for this question. I have a
tx400 the original by Palomar linear amplifier. However, I am in the
process of selling it ; however, I am unable to find any documentation or
solid values at time of sale. What would be a fair price for both parties.

Passed exam. First set and antenna
Posted: 03 Feb 2022 11:36 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sjs3yn/passed_exam_first_set_and_antenna/
I just passed the exam (foundation level)
Im planing to get the I-COM id4100A. It seems like it has all the important features.
My question is i share a house. I live on ground floor and one neighbour
above me.
The possibility of putting a yaugie antenna on the roof is pretty hard.
I know this may sound stupid.. But what would happen if i put a yagi
antenna in a short pole indoors and directional to the open space garden.
There is like 40 meters free space between me and next set of houses.
I learned that yagi are directional antenna. So what would happen if i
place a yagi on a pole that is about 60 inches above ground level.
The antenna will come out of the window with a 50 degree angel directed
towards that free space i have.
Please dont judge im just foundation level. I really wanna try HF.
Note: i cannot fit any aerials in the garden or in the house apart from tv antenna. No method of communication build-up is allowed in my contract.
Would this cause any interference? Is it a dumb idea? I know best to put antenna as high as possible but i dont have that option unfortunately.
I dont think a repeater would allow me to do hf?

All-in-one HT Suggestions

https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sk1qnh/allinone_ht_suggestions/
Hello all, I have been watching a bunch of ham youtube videos and radio in general and I have decided I want to get a radio and get my license. I want
to make a solid purchase now that can support me for a while in exploring
the hobby. I was hoping to get a dual or tri band ht with analog and dmr support, but also the ability to listen on many more bands in order to hear things like police and Maritime traffic or even the local zoo. I am hoping
to find a solid ht with these features that relatively 150-200 dollars but
if that not possible ill take any suggestions regardless of price. Thank
you all for the help! submitted by /u/the_grey_philosopher

Options for very low-cost QRP SDR HF transceiver? ..

I sold my Yaesu full size 100w HF radio a few years ago. Wasnt using it and needed the money. Im slightly aware of the SDR world but havent kept up on
it.
Is there something like a sub ~$100 QRP HF radio, SDR or otherwise
available, that allows you to slap on an antenna, toss a wire out the
window, and do some HF voice/phone SSB? Whats out there?
Thanks in advance! submitted by /u/impreza77

Help choosing a HF antenna - what do you think?
Posted: 03 Feb 2022 01:57 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sjvl70/help_choosing_a_hf_antenna_what_do_you_think/
I originally purchased a BB7V vertical (I know, I know... its been terrible which is why Im seeking help again) but after four days of trying to get
the darn thing to work have found out that its not working Im considering purchasing another antenna instead. Im looking for something ideally that
will do 20 and 40m, but can be mast mounted without a ground counterpoise system since I cant install that in my concrete backyard with a pool and
will give me the best reception and furthest transmit capabilities. I live
in SoCal in a valley at the base of a hill, so I need something that can
get out there too and avoid the noise from my suburb. After narrowing down
my choices to fit my budget and space considerations, Ive narrowed it down
to four selections and I wanted your opinions on what you think would be
best. I plan on using the MFJ-915 RF choke and LBS 54 mHz low pass filter
that I just ordered too to hopefully improve the signal since I have a GP-3 VHF/UHF antenna that Im going to mount lower on the mast. Im already using
50 ft lmr400 coax and FYI Im not interested in stringing up a wire antenna since I need something that I can easily take down as well, so lets keep it
to these four or something really similar please.
I guess my main question would be what is the best antenna design given the comparisons - trap verticals, or the dipole? Theyre not in any particular order, but if you could provide your top one or two picks and the reasoning
Id appreciate it! EANTENNA 17826.11B (
https://www.dxengineering.com/parts/ean-r2010202) This seems good but the
only thing is that it doesnt do 40m. Could I possibly do 40m with a tuner?
I have a LDG AT-200 Pro II autotuner that I can use with the antennas
Diamond CP5H (
https://www.dxengineering.com/parts/dmn-cp5h) I like the
design of this one since it seems compact enough and isnt directional, but
Im wondering if it will actually be an improvement over my current setup
since its still a vertical and Im having a lot of trouble with the BB7V
Diamond HFV-5 (
https://www.dxengineering.com/parts/dmn-hfv-5) This one
seems good, but since its a dipole thats directional will it receive
signals if its mounted close to the side of my house? The mast I have
doesnt extend fully above my roof line and I cant mount anything on the
roof. I also wont be able to rotate it completely North and South because
of where Im mounting it in my backyard Diamond CP6AR (
https://www.dxengineering.com/parts/dmn-cp6ar?rrec=true) This seems good
as well similar to the HFV-5, but Im wondering if the radials can all be mounted on one side and still retain all of the multi-band possibilities? Basically, I dont think Ill have enough room where Im mounting it to be
able to fit 8 ft diameter, (I have about 4 ft to the side of the house), so would I need to remove some of the bands? submitted by /u/Mean-Difference-197

DIY charging cradle for Motorola SL1600/SL300/SL2600

Ive recently purchased a used Motorola SL1600 which I am charging via USB
at the moment. Id like to use a cradle but they are quite expensive so I am thinkign about building/printing one. The radio has two contacts at the
bottom - one at the left, one at the right. Has the official charging
cradle some sort of brain or does it simply power the radio with 5V?

Handheld HAM vs FRS
Posted: 03 Feb 2022 11:13 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sjrk60/handheld_ham_vs_frs/
Good day all,
I have a Motorola FRS radio. I use it to scan the waves downtown and talk sometimes, but Id like something that can scan more and still have the
option to talk (...although.. see point 2 below).
I like the Yaesu brand and will probably go with this or something that
isnt a Chinese brand. I cannot find comparison charts online except for the Yaesu product catalogue. Having a look there, I have a few questions:
-What is the main difference between the FT and the VX series?
-They can receive FRS frequencies, but not transmit on those frequencies, correct?
-If the specs dont mention audio recording or a SD card slot, Im guessing
it cannot record.
-Do these radios all have a scan mode similar to my Motorola MJ430?
Appreciate any advice! submitted by /u/cptstubing16

Antenna theory
Posted: 02 Feb 2022 10:32 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sjc6c6/antenna_theory/
Id appreciate some help understanding a little bit of antenna theory: I recently came across a HF dipole - the dipole featured two short PVC
sections (maybe 8 inches) attached to the central insulator, each of which
had 9 m of wire tightly wrapped along it. The 9 m of wire was then attached
(on each side) to 1 m of metal antenna material, for an overall antenna
that looked like:
(1 m metal) ---- (8 inches of PVC with 9 m worth of wire wrapped around it)
--- (insulator) --- (8 inches of PVC with 9m wire) ---- (1 m metal)
My current understanding is that this antenna results in a dipole with 10m
of electrical length on either side, but physically is much smaller (say, 3 meters total). My understanding is that the reason for building an antenna
like this is to provide appropriate 1/4 wavelength sides of the dipole to ensure antenna resonance. If these are both correct (please tell me if they
are not), one thing Id like to understand is where the radio waves that actually successfully radiate from this antenna to make a contact leave (I
have a similar question about a loading coil on a vertical). Is it just the final meter of metal rod antenna material on each side of the dipole? I understand that radio waves will also emanate from the coiled sections, but
it seemed like these are coiled so tightly that theyd interfere with each
other and the successful signal would only emanate from the free rod
section? Would appreciate feedback and clarification,
