How do you compensate for a ham with a speech difficulty?
Posted: 04 Feb 2022 05:14 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sku61g/how_do_you_compensate_for_a_ham_with_a_speech/
On my local repeater, we have a person with a very obvious speech issue, if
I were to guess, cerebral palsy, but doesnt really matter. Anyway, he (she/they) checks in on the local repeater. I know the name, but I have a really hard time understanding him, and I feel like a dick if I ask for him
to repeat himself. From my experience IRL with other people with similar problems, I know the brain is fully working, but the outlet to the outside world is broken, and I really hate to remind them that the issue is there.
What is the best method for responding to his calls on the repeater? I
hate leaving him hanging, but I also hate to point out that Im having difficulties understanding him. submitted by /u/thetable123

I made a pitstop at W1AW, and got on the air! It was amazing making contact with hams that have been licensed for over 30 years and never made contact
with W1AW. Glad to add a lot of firsts in peoples logbooks. If you’re ever near Newington, Connecticut definitely make the pitstop if you’re a
licensed ham and operate the station. This is quite the ham shack and every time I’m up in this area I am totally coming up here to operate. Very impressive is an understatement with what the ARRL has set up here.
Definitely a bucket list item checked! submitted by /u/CaptinKirk

A post on here regarding a disability pushed me to ask a question thats
been on my mind for a week now. Amatuer Radio use for the deaf, options?

To further go into this, ive made friends with one of the fathers from my youngest sons basketball team whos son also plays. Now both him & his son
are deaf, but his son does have an implant & can respond to certain audible tones. The father however is as far as I know incapable of using a hearing implant so is strictly deaf. We communicate through typing messages or
writing while at our kids practice, but Ive wondered as to in what ways
could I introduce him into this hobby as we go on. With the inability to
hear, how could I help him if he shows more interest? Thanks in advance submitted by /u/ThaReaper892

Antenna for HF in the High Arctic
Posted: 04 Feb 2022 08:57 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ski9ob/antenna_for_hf_in_the_high_arctic/
Good day all and hopefully you can shed some creative solutions to a
seemingly unique problem.
I am poised to go to the High Arctic for a duration, where the primary communication devices will be Satellite. Part of our mandate is to ensure a reliable secondary HF solution. Years past though, this has not proven to
be a reliable source of communication. The primary station will be in a
fixed location and will be using SSB (USB) with power up to 400 W. They
will be transmitting on various freq within the 3-30 MHz HF band. They
intend to use a folded dipole suspended horizontally in the air. They might instead setup a sloping vee (to be determined when they arrive up there).
The mobile station will be moving (stopping in the evening to setup and transmit) and will also be using SSB (USB) with power up to 20 W. The
maximum distance travelled will be up to 400 km from the primary station.
We are intending to setup a dipole, however suspending it in the air will
be very difficult due to the terrain.
So where is the problem you are asking. Do I have enough power (20 W) to transmit back (up to 400 km) to the primary station? Years past, we have
taken a 150 W amplifier, however, due to space and generating power, we are
not able to do this. Can I use a dipole without suspending it in the air?
Since the terrain is rock and ice and lifting the antenna is next to impossible, will I be successful if I lay the dipole on the ground? My intuition says no, but I am open to suggestions. Years past, I have taken
an NVIS with me since it is a self supporting, omni-directional antenna,
but again, due to space I am being asked to take a dipole.
Thank you for your time in reading this. If you have additional questions
or suggestions, feel free to respond. I appreciate the forum you have and
look forward to your advice. submitted by /u/preacher_ca

Anytone AT778UV PSA
Posted: 04 Feb 2022 09:04 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/skyr2f/anytone_at778uv_psa/
If anyone is considering the Anytone AT778, but is turned off by the lack
of a volume knob on the radio face (like I was), you can configure the knob
to be a volume control! It wasnt obvious, and many Amazon reviews
complained about it too. So I figured that Id clearly explain that it can
be done.
It isnt super advertised, and I only really knew that it could be set up
like that from a single YouTube comment. But its very easy to change the
knob from a channel select by default, to a volume adjust. Only catch is
that you then have to hit one of the programmable P buttons to change the channel / frequency, like you did with the volume adjust by default. Its
not such an issue as I usually control the channel from the microphone
anyway. Actually, I have the configurable buttons on the mic set to monitor (open squelch), scan, volume and squelch control. I rarely even reach down
to touch the actual radio.
Thats all! Love the radio overall for a cheap mobile rig. It does
everything Ive wanted it to do, and it reaches out to all the repeaters by
me with ease. I wish the screen was bigger, but for $125 its great.

via telephone. Recently in digging up some family history I wonder whether
he could have used ham for any meaningful communication at that time? My impression was that it was just to connect to a new location, but could one talk/send messages? Thanks for answering a dumb question! submitted by /u/Bighair79

FT1000MP MK V Data modes

Hello!
Its a bit of a longhsot but was wondering if anyone has used a 1000MP Mk V
on digital modes before and can advise the setup?
I currently have it fully working on CAT control via HRD. WSJT-X is using
HRD to control the radio.
I am receiving audio from the radio from the external soundcard so I am confident the sound settings are correct. This is connected to the Packet connector on the back of the radio.
When the Radio goes into TX I am not getting any audio through the packet
jack to give me any drive.
Am I missing a setting in the radio?
Edit: radio is currently on the Packet mode and the user settings have been
set to account for USB operation instead of LSB as is the default.
Any help would be appreciated as I cant find too much online...
Only recently upgraded to the unit and love it so far just struggling with getting this mode off the ground.
Thanks and 73! submitted by /u/Difficult_Ad9296

[OC] Testing your radio's audio frequency response
Posted: 04 Feb 2022 05:00 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sktu2g/oc_testing_your_radios_audio_frequency_response/
During the week I was reading a comment from another amateur about digital modes. Tucked inside that comment was a phrase that could easily have been overlooked, but it reminded me that there is plenty to learn and test in
the field of amateur radio.
The phrase, "requires actual understanding of audio level paths" was
uttered by Chris, VK2CJB and it prompted a brief conversation at the time,
but Ive been working on it ever since.
Where I arrived at is an attempt, incomplete as yet, to design a mechanism
to show the impact of various transmitter settings on the received audio in such a way that you can test your own gear and see the result.
Before I explain how Im doing this, let me describe why its important.
Using a radio in concept is pretty simple, if you yell into the microphone,
the audio comes out distorted and if you whisper, it might also be
distorted, but in a different way, neither is conducive to communication.
One way to improve this is a tool called the ALC. Using Automatic Level
Control as a guide to what level your audio should be is outlined in every amateur radio manual Ive seen, but how much it matters and to what extent
is left unsaid. If you apply a filter or any number of other fancy options, what happens to your audio?
To get some sense of what Im describing, listening back to your own voice
after it comes across HF SSB is surprisingly distorted in comparison to a
local recording.
You might argue, whats the harm, as long as the other station can hear my voice, were good to go.
Sure, if voice is all youre using, but what if its data? In that case, the audio youre transmitting is actually encoded digital information. To decode
it, the software needs to deal with frequencies, distortion and levels to
name a few.
In computer science, "garbage in, garbage out" is the concept that flawed,
or nonsense input data produces nonsense output. In our case, if you
transmit garbage, the receiver is going to start with garbage and what gets decoded is likely not what you expect.
Without going into error correction, essentially, the cleaner the path
between the transmitter and the receiver, the higher the chances of success
and to be fair, you already know this when you attempt to work a pile-up on
a noisy band. "Again, again, just the prefix, again!", sound familiar?
To achieve this I started with the idea that you could transmit a tone and
if you knew what it was, you could determine the difference between what
was sent and what was received.
My first step was to generate a single 1 kHz tone, but then I wondered what would happen if you did multiple tones, one after the other. My current
version is an audio frequency sweep, running from 0 to 5 kHz in five
seconds. Its essentially a computer generated sequence of tones with known characteristics. You transmit this audio file using your radio and then
record it off air, either from a local receiver, WebSDR, or the radio
belonging to a friend.
Using the recording, you can create a spectrogram, a picture, showing the frequencies over time present in the audio. Compare the two and you just
learnt what each setting on your radio does precisely to the audio.
Of course its simple for me to say this, but Im working on using a tool Ive spoken about before, csdr, to do the heavy lifting, so you can actually do
a meaningful comparison between the various audio files.
In the mean time, Ive managed to use SoX, the so-called Swiss Army knife of sound processing programs to both generate the audio sweep and draw a preliminary spectrogram.
Next up is showing some side-by-side images of various radio settings and
their effect on the spectrogram. Ill publish this on my website when I have something to show-and-tell.
I also dont yet know if my source audio file is going to be sufficient, but
Ill subject that to some testing as well. For example, Im investigating multiple simultaneous audio sweeps with different frequency ranges. The
more complex the spectrogram, the more we might be able to learn from the distortion on receive, but time will tell.
If you have some ideas on how to improve this, let me know.

Ive been unable to open other files outside of my ~ (home) directory on my
mac using CHIRP. Today I found a work around. You need to open CHIRP via
the terminal, which will give it permissions to access other files.
To do this, open a terminal window, and issue this command:
cd /Applications/CHIRP.app; ./Contents/MacOS/chirp submitted by
