Just wondering if anyone had any records of communicating with my father?
He was super into ham radio and I remember him doing it my whole childhood.
I am going through his old things currently and Ive decided I want to get
into this hobby to kinda keep up the connection with him. So I will be
posting periodically asking for advice and also. If there is any interest. Posting pics of his equipment and truly massive amount of qsl cards. In
2009/10 he had reached all but 4 of the possible places, and we have a ton
of the cards.

How can we get new people involved and keep the hobby alive? What about
HamTok?
Posted: 13 Feb 2022 01:59 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sru774/how_can_we_get_new_people_involved_and_keep_the/
The best way I can think of to get new people into amateur radio is to
bring it to the platforms the younger generations are using. I would
definitely say there is an audience for it on TikTok based on the responses
I have gotten from the few short ham radio videos I have posted.
As amateur radio enthusiasts, were always trying new things, installing new software and exploring the nuances of the hobby that we hadnt previously
been interested in or heard of. Its safe to say if you have been in the
hobby for a little while you probably arent shy about uncharted territory,
so creating an account and installing an app on your phone really isnt that
big of a deal.
I believe we need more hams to get on this platform and talk about what
they do and what they find interesting about the hobby or what got them
into it in the first place. There are a lot of different reasons for all of
us. Show off your equipment, demonstrate operating a specific mode, Show
how easy it really is to build an antenna.
Im planning to also make a few videos talking about actually getting
licensed and selecting those first pieces of equipment, the challenges I
had with getting there, and what I did before I got licensed that helped me decide what I wanted to do with my license once I got it. This is an
expensive hobby, especially if youre in a hurry, but I think the point is
to remember that it is a hobby and that acquiring all of the hardware you
want takes time, patience, and of course money. The price tag on a new HF
all band radio can be enough to scare anybody off honestly, but theres
plenty of other things you can do with amateur radio before you amass the
funds to get those big dollar items.
Keep in mind that the primary argument is usually somebody holding up a cellphone and asking what your radio can do that their iPhone cant. The
simple answer is "A lot" but maybe if we show people how fascinating it can
be, they will want to look further into it on their own.
The maximum video length is three minutes, shorter than a typical QSO, so
you cant pack a lot of information into them, but thats sort of why I think
it will work well. Show people enough to spark curiosity. I really hope
this thread can turn into something that brings more people in and
encourages operators to welcome the newbies in. A lot of us that have been doing this for any appreciable time likely have hardware that we have been hanging onto for one reason or another but rarely use, if at all. Theres a
new person out there that you could lend that old boat anchor to. Its not
worth the hundreds of dollars you once dumped into it even if you can find somebody to pay your asking price for it. submitted by

How many handheld radios/receivers do you own?
Posted: 13 Feb 2022 09:53 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ss3aza/how_many_handheld_radiosreceivers_do_you_own/
I just bought a used IC-R30 receiver to add to my collection and play with since it has so many frequencies outside of my dual-band handheld to listen
to and can’t wait for it to come in. I just went to a supercross (dirt biking) event this last weekend and brought my KG-UV8H vhf/uhf with me
since I was trying to listen to the team and security radios, but I
couldn’t hear anything of the sort after scanning for a long while. So I’m hoping the R30 will enable me to pickup some chatter the next time I go to
some type of event like that. Unfortunately the R30 doesn’t have DMR
support though, so I might have to pick up a DMR radio next, but collecting various handheld radios is starting to be a problem I think… For handheld radios I have a Motorola FRS set, a cb, a gmrs, a vhf/uhf, and waiting for
the R30 receiver to arrive. But I’m considering picking up a DMR radio or scanner since none of what I currently have support DMR, maybe a SDS100 or
some type of wise band DMR two-way, but if I go somewhere how will I decide which one to take, ahhh! Haha
So out of curiosity… How many handhelds do you have in your collection?
What types do you have, which so you use the most or recommend people have?
How many is too many handhelds? submitted by /u/Mean-Difference-197

video and it got me wondering what is the fastest amateur radio digital
mode that can transfer files and maybe websites. Also is there ANY
potential in transferring these over audio bandwidth or would u need a signalink or something? submitted by /u/Markdaboi2250

High frequency signals embedded in low frequency waves...
Posted: 13 Feb 2022 09:16 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ss2og6/high_frequency_signals_embedded_in_low_frequency/
Hello, I had a thought, and Im sure it is a dumb thought but I have no idea
how to even formulate my thought into a Google-able phrase, so I am hoping
you all fine ladies and gentlemen can help me formulate my thought and then feel free to tell me its a dumb thought lol...
The basic part is, is it possible to embed a high frequency signal on a low frequency waves? So you get the benefits of higher frequency data
transmission (speed and volume of data) and the benefits of low frequency
waves (long range and better penetration through stuff)? I used to be an electrician by trade, and I remember there being waves on top of waves so
that if you zoomed in you would see the high frequency stuff, but if you
zoomed out the whole high frequency waves would be moving up and down to
its own low frequency... In the electrically world, this was usually bad, resulting in noise or spurious signals in sensitive electronic equipment.
But recently I read an article about Fourier transforms, and while that particular article was way over my head, they said basically every wave is
a sum of other waves. So that got me thinking, if you could put that high frequency data signal on top of a low frequency signal, and mathematically separate them somehow at the destination, can you get the best of both
worlds? Turn the bad interference in the electrical world into something
useful elsewhere?
I know I have to be missing something obvious here. The older I get the
less my brain functions I think, so apologies in advance for that.
Hopefully you all can help, thank you! submitted by /u/ValiantBear

Mobile antenna receiving issue
Posted: 13 Feb 2022 07:55 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ss16pz/mobile_antenna_receiving_issue/
I have an Icom 2730A dual band radio in my truck. I am using a Diamond dual band antenna, and a lip mount to mount the antenna to the hood of my truck.
I have analyzed the antenna on my NanoVNA and it is showing an SWR of 1.2:1
in the 2m and 70cm bands.
Im having an issue where I have very limited range on receiving for the
radio. My handhelds and other cars can pick up multiple repeaters at a
decent distance, but this radio cannot pick up the same repeaters when I am very close, or they come in very staticky. Today I was able to talk to
another ham and was told I was loud and clear, but I could barely hear them. Could this be an antenna/mounting issue, or is it a good chance I have a
bad transceiver? Does anyone have tips to fix this? TIA submitted by /u/freund0

Contest Logging 101 Question
Posted: 13 Feb 2022 10:49 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/srptg3/contest_logging_101_question/
With the upcoming ARRL DX CW contest, a question has arisen that I still
have trouble wrapping my brain around. Wording of the exchange definition
has made it worse rather than better. So, I submit my question to the hive. Example: V3T sends 5nn nn for their exchange. (Hey, its shorter, right?)
Now, The signal report ALWAYS being numeric, cut number expands to 599.
First question: Is that the correct interpretation of that section?
Second half of Exchange question: The Power component of the received
exchange. The rules say "and power as a number or abbreviation." With V3T reporting nn as power "abbreviation", what do we record? Do we record nn as sent, or 99 for cut numbers?
The ARRL example only adds to the ambiguity, by using KW without
elaboration in one example in the rules, and not showing how to log 1TT as
an abbreviation or as 100.
Where it becomes an issue, for both the sending and receiving station is
when the log is submitted. If both dont submit the same information in the exchange, an LGCK (Log Check) Penalty is HIGHLY likely to be incurred.
So, what I am wondering is: What is the best practice for logging these? My thought is NN cut number is 99, 1TT is 100, but what do you do if you get a
K KW for kilowatt?
I suspect of a few of you have gotten bitten by this. What is the best
`best practice about these?
Thanks.
