Last night I tried to build a poor man's AX-1 to hopefully make some QSOs
at lunchtime on 20 meters. 1.3:1 SWR and just made my first contact (AZ
from my QTH in OK, 579). I can't believe this actually worked, amateur
radio is magical.

Waiting on callsign - took tech and general last saturday!
Posted: 14 Feb 2022 05:35 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ssqy41/waiting_on_callsign_took_tech_and_general_last/
I have a question, and Im sure the answer will be tagging an older thread
in the replies. I took (and passed) tech and general on Saturday,
programmed my BF-F8HP to local repeaters, NOAA reports, etc. Obviously I
havent transmitted because I do not want to break the law. Noticed some
issues with my radio and long story short its been returned and refunded. I will not EVER purchase another baofeng product. Questionable legality, extremely poorly opperating transmit function says every owner, and general distaste for bad business practices have pushed me past ever buying another baofeng. Saw an article that only ~9% of Baofengs passed the ARRL voluntary inspection over the past few years at big meet ups, and every other manufacturer hit 100%. Im not bitter towards anyone who doesnt share my opinion, Im just looking for some help.
Where can I get a handheld dual band 2m 70cm that isnt... you know... the
same quality as a baofeng. Im willing to spend more than baofeng money.
Anyone recommend any models that are well renowned? submitted by

What grease for rotator?
Posted: 14 Feb 2022 02:40 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ssn9zm/what_grease_for_rotator/
Im restoring an old Emotator 502cxx rotator which has been sitting on the
shelf for about 25 years. When I hooked it up it ran in one direction only
so I stripped it down and cleaned it out. Sorted out the motor brake
mechanism and now looking to put it together again. What would be the best grease to use? Looks like it originally had standard auto grease but should
I think about using a silicone grease instead? submitted by

SMA to PL259

https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ssta6n/sma_to_pl259/
Evening gents,
Ive ordered a Shark 5/8 wave 2m antenna for my car, and want to run my handhelds through it for the time being. Once i get a base, ill transfer my mobile thats standing in as base to my car. But untill then, i have a
question.
Is there any sort of meaningful loss going from an SMA connector on my
Yaesu Ft4x to the Pl259 of the antenna? I have adapters ordered, so i know
its doable. I ask this just for curiosity sake.
Thanks! submitted by /u/CycleMN

Communications in an emergency - Recommendations?
Posted: 14 Feb 2022 08:47 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ssup37/communications_in_an_emergency_recommendations/
Myself, along with a few close friends, have been trying to establish a
general emergency preparedness plan in case of natural disaster/civil unrest/zombie apocalypse. We are spread out over a radius of about 20
miles, and would like to maintain the ability to reliably communicate with
each other in case phone services and/or power go out. Assuming that
generators are an option, what would be a reliable way of keeping in touch
with each other that doesnt rely heavily on outside infrastructure?
I spoke with one of my friends, and he suggested that D-STAR might be one solution. Ive heard some suggest that GMRS radio is another. I know next to nothing about either of these. We have Baochangs, and are able to speak to
each other using repeaters, but that usually only works if we climb on top
of our roofs and hold the radios up, and even then, connections arent very clear or reliable. submitted by /u/PreacherBrown

How Organized is Your Shack? HELP
Posted: 14 Feb 2022 08:09 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sse7fd/how_organized_is_your_shack_help/
Ive become overwhelmed with neatness and organization in my shack. Ive got
SO MUCH STUFF! Ive been a ham for 61 years and I always think..."Ill keep
that, I know Ill use it someday." I cant begin to tell you all that STUFF
Im talking about. Cables, connectors, microphones, chargers, extra radios, speakers, computer stuff, etc. If I were to rate my organization and
neatness on a 1-10 scale, Id have to be a 2 or maybe even a 1.
Im curious...how would you rate the quality of your shack from 1-10, and do
you have any tips (other than tossing stuff) for better organization?
Thanks for any help you can suggest. 73
EDIT: My office is 16X20 feet with two desks (read horizontal surfaces.) I
also am heavy into Family History/Genealogy and Landscape Photography. Both
of those pursuits add to the paperwork and clutter...not just ham radio. submitted by /u/zfrost45

Yet another request for a radio suggestion, with 2 specific features
Posted: 14 Feb 2022 05:50 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ssr8rm/yet_another_request_for_a_radio_suggestion_with_2/
new ham, just past the test, etc etc...got a Baofeng cause it was cheap,
etc etc.
I have two problems Im hoping a new radio will address:
The menu system is atrocious and any change I make seems to undo all the
other channels.
Is there a radio that lets you "group" channels ?
For instance, if Im in the mood to just scan all the local police
frequencies: "scan group1"
If I change geographic locations (when I go to work 40 miles
away), "activate group2".
If I just wanna scan my symplex/friends freqs, "scan group3"...
make sense?

Echolink and UV-5R
Posted: 14 Feb 2022 03:10 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ssns6a/echolink_and_uv5r/
I am trying to troubleshoot my Echolink Setup. I found this blog post,
https://www.jonrick.com/2016/11/baofeng-echolink-simplex-link/ and thought
Id give it a try. Im using a UV5R (Echolink connected), a Boafeng 888
(remote HT), a BTECH APRS cable, USB soundcard ($7 Amazon), and Qtel on
Linux (Echolink client). Ive tried both radios connected to the Echolink computer. Here is what Im experiencing.
When I transmit from the remote radio I can see that the transmission goes through to the the receiving radio and to the Echolink test server. When
the Ecolink test server replays the audio, the PTT feature is not engaging
on my UV5R. I have VOX set to 1 on the UV5R, but the PTT is never engaged
from the computer, even though I can see in the Echolink client that it is receiving audio.
I have read this post,
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/hfbxfr/uv5r_echolink_simplex_node_troubleshooting/,
hoping for some answers, but nothing. Im open to any suggestions you all
may have.
EDIT: I adjusted both the volumes on the soundcard and the threshold of the Echolink client to successfully complete a transmission. It not as clear as
I would like. But I suppose that could have everything to do with the cheap radios I am using. I believe the volume being up all the way was helpful to open the PTT function. submitted by /u/winston198451

(Another) IC-7300 or FTDX10, but QRM this time
Posted: 14 Feb 2022 08:46 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ssf31n/another_ic7300_or_ftdx10_but_qrm_this_time/
I know theres a million posts comparing the two and almost as many youtube videos, but Im just getting back into thing and about the click the buy
button and havent found anything addressing QRM.
I know the dx10 is much better at picking out hay in a hay stack so to
speak when it comes to faint DX, but I was wondering which rig is better at knocking out local QRM? And if its the dx10, is it $500 better? lol
My QTH used to be okish sitting around and s3-s5 depending on the weather
and time of day on an old TS-430 but its been 8-9 years now my various RTL based SDRs are close to useless for large swaths of VHF and UHF.
So basically if I cant narrow the source(s) to my QTH or a friendly
neighbour, which will deal with the invasion of cheap leds and wall warts
the best?

Heavy construction next door, want to listen to chatter. How to find
frequency?
Posted: 14 Feb 2022 12:41 PM PST

They just broke ground yesterday on a giant development right across the
street (yay....grumble). Might as well make lemonade and listen to their chatter. Right now its big scapers, bulldozers, etc. just tearing up the
land.
Ive tried scanning and didnt come up with anything. Does anyone know of frequencies I might try or what range I might limit my scanning to?
