Just ran my first net control!

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 05:13 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sxgqpb/just_ran_my_first_net_control/

It went very well - I got the script from the previous net control and
didnt have any issues. Everyone was very kind in their words and patient as
I asked for some stations to repeat their calls.
I will say it feels a bit weird to be the "center of attention", so to
speak, for all the stations but it was cool to be able to chat to everyone
and get some hands-on practice in! submitted by /u/radakul

    Just starting-need some antenna advice.

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 08:01 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sxk198/just_startingneed_some_antenna_advice/

I have an ICOM IC-705 on the way. I want to start listening til I get my license. I figure I will connect to the local repeater and listen in. I
have been trying to figure out just a small antenna I could attach while I
get started. I saw a YouTube video where someone recommended the Signal
Stick from Signal Stuff, but then I saw the page has a note that it is not designed for the IC-705.
I just want a simple antenna I can attach to the unit. I have not really learned about antennas yet, so will buy something better later.
Any recommendations for this newcomer? submitted by /u/drewmc

Just passed my tech test. Where do i begin

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 02:50 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sxdq57/just_passed_my_tech_test_where_do_i_begin/

So I passed my test last night and I am now just waiting for my call sign.
But in the mean time I am kind of lost on what to do next . I have an HT
and I do plan on getting my general later on but I am unsure when it comes
to what to get as in a more complete setup and what other communities are
out there. I plan on doing more on the HF side when i get general because
while i was in the Marines I was a radio operator and got to use HF and
setup using different antenna styles and it was quite enjoyable.

DMR without radio AND without USB-Dongle

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 11:18 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sx8x5o/dmr_without_radio_and_without_usbdongle/

I am trying to get into DMR lately.I have a codeplug that works well on all local repeaters whenever I am operating portable.
However from my home QTH I cant get a good connection to any repeater. I
can not mount an outdoor antenna and I do not want to invest too much into
    an indoor construction.
What would be the easier / possible solution:
1: get a hotspot and config. the radio
2: why even get a hotspot when Im going over internet anyway -> go through software entirely
Ive searched for radio-less solutions but they all require some special USB dongle (DVMEGA), is there no pure software solution to this, preferably OpenSource?
It seems like the USB dongle is required for the vocoder, but OpenSource
RX solutions exist (dsd+) so why is there no pure software TX solution (directly to Brandmeister network).
The hotspot seems like the easier solution but a bit overkill: Why should I even bother with using a handheld radio to bridge a gap of a few meters to
the hotspot which connects to the internet anyway.

ayyyy, i got my digital modes working finally. FT8 seems to be TXing for
    too long. Sup with this

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 09:20 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sx67i4/ayyyy_i_got_my_digital_modes_working_finally_ft8/

So I dont think Ill ever be really into FT8, but it seemed like a pretty straight forward way to get a confirmed QSO, a signal report and 73s so I
can see, in real time, that my digital setup works. Everything I read
suggested that it is a series of 15-second contacts. My IC-746 PRO seems to
be TXing for 18 seconds consistently. Now, I got a couple contacts logged
so it works, but that just seems a bit weird. Is that normal?
I feel like if my radio is squawking over its time slot itll have a tough
time listening so I might miss my replies. submitted by

Looking for someone with Radio equipment in Central Florida (Orlando Area)

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 04:41 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sxg2ma/looking_for_someone_with_radio_equipment_in/

    Hello everyone!
Im not sure if this is the best place to be posting this kind of request,
but I figured Id give it a shot. Im a film student in the central Florida
area (specifically around Orlando) thats currently representing a group of students filming a short film for our studies. The topic of this short film involves radio equipment and armature radio. Were trying to find someone in
the area that might have access to a radio and or similar equipment that we could us as a prop in our film.
Preferably, the equipment would be older looking, and it doesnt have to be functional at all. The only requirement of what we need is a radio that can
be placed on a characters desk and have a couple switches, or knobs be
switched or turned. We promise, due to the nature of the film, to return
the equipment unharmed as well as credit you at the end of the film.
If youre interested, feel free to message me here on reddit. I hope to hear back from some of you! submitted by /u/Visible-Interview565

    RF Burns from Heil Microphone?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 03:59 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sxf7e4/rf_burns_from_heil_microphone/

    Hi everyone.
Last Sunday I bought a Yaesu FT-840 with an MFJ-945E tuner. This evening, I
put out a magnetic CB Radio Antenna outside and set my tuner up to have an
SWR of around 1.2-1.3. After playing around with the radio for a bit and on 40M, I got what seemed like an electric shock. At first, I thought it was a splinter or something in my hand, but the same thing happened on my other
hand. From what I know it looks to me like RF burns or a short somewhere.
Does anyone know what this could be? My mic is a handheld Heil.
    Thanks. submitted by /u/relivxd

Sketched a diagram for my remote beacon/crossband repeater station!

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 03:25 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sxehzn/sketched_a_diagram_for_my_remote_beaconcrossband/

In a follow-up to the crossband repeater and ham radio geocache posts I
made a little while ago, I decided to make a design for what I think would
be a cool station. For right now Ive settled on putting in a Wouxun KG-UV8D
to act as a crossband repeater, along with a Baofeng BF-F8HP controlled by
a Raspberry Pi to do SSTV and/or an FM beacon of some sort.
6x9 inch container (likely a tupperware or something similar)
I was considering a lot of ways to setup this stations antennas, but I
think Ive decided to set all this up in a tree. Ill put the "control box"
about 5-6 feet up a tree and zip-tie it or ratchet strap it around the
trunk (while being careful not to harm the tree, of course) and the antenna mast will extend 4-6 feet up from the box.
Im planning on using a telescopic pole (like the one painters and pool
cleaners use) because not only are they cheap, but theyre very reliable and lightweight. Im going to mount HT antennas with ground wires attached, and
also a 5W solar panel. Ive run similar setups in the past and they seemed
    to work quite nicely. https://preview.redd.it/0kz6wohrn2j81.png?width=648&format=png&auto=webp&s=06790d53cb0401063470a7eb60d7890595373fc6
This obviously isnt going to be the "stealthy" approach I was initially
going for but I think if I set this up temporarily in a secluded place deep into some trees, it should be fine. Im pretty excited to see this come to fruition! Id love to hear your thoughts on this project!

    Recommend me a GOOD HT

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 05:57 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sxhm7y/recommend_me_a_good_ht/

Im for sure still a newbie even though I got my license a 3 years ago. I
only own a Baofeng UV 82 and based on my personal situation I see no point
    in anything but a HT.
Id really like something user friendly, like I said Im still a straight
no0b and apart from learning how to use Chirp and learning just barely
enough to pass the technician test I know nothing. If I could get something that could somehow automatically pull repeater frequencies based on GPS
that would be great. Digital would be nice, but I dont know that Id really
use it (no preference in which digital mode). APRS is interesting, but I
dont really put any stock in it because I see no personal use case. Compact would be nice and bluetooth would be really nice. I spend much more time on public transport than I do in my car and if I could listen somewhat inconspicuously while Im out and about that would be a big bonus.
Im willing to spend a fair few hundred dollars on it. What do you fine
    folks recommend? submitted by /u/funklab
