Ham Radio Exam Changes 2022 (technician license)
Posted: 02 Mar 2022 08:29 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/t53xm8/ham_radio_exam_changes_2022_technician_license/
Hello,
Im about to begin studying for my Ham Radio technician license, but it
seems the exam pool is about to change in June of 2022.
http://www.ncvec.org/page.php?id=373
Theres a book by ARRL but it only says that it is valid for the pre-June
2022 content. Does anyone know if a 5th edition book is set to be released
soon containing the updated exam information?
Would it still be acceptable to use the 4th edition book knowing the
content is expiring?

Has anyone seen issues with the 991a where after about a minute of the
radio being turned on the RX audio on VHF starts to sound distorted? If I
turn the radio and power supply off for about a minute the issue goes away
for a minute or two before coming back. Ill try to post a video of it issue soon. submitted by /u/AtxGuitarist

Advice on cheap, low-power benchtop power supply for QRP.
Posted: 02 Mar 2022 04:57 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/t5f1ro/advice_on_cheap_lowpower_benchtop_power_supply/
Ive been looking at the Tenma (Farnell) 72-2685 and it meets my
requirements: Cheap - approx $AUD100. Variable voltage with voltage and current display. 90W and I wouldnt need more than 20W.
My main concern is how noisy it would be for ham purposes. Initially it
would be used to power some QRP CW kits Im intending to build as well as
some type of SSB or DSB QRP transceivers in future. Listing:
https://au.element14.com/tenma/72-2685/bench-power-supply-1-ch-30v-3a/dp/256398101
Manual:
https://www.farnell.com/datasheets/2578054.pdf Datasheet:
https://www.farnell.com/datasheets/2724054.pdf
Does anyone have experience with this unit they can share, or could
recommend a similar priced unit that would be available in Australia?
EDIT: Sorry, just realised Element14 dont accept PayPal so thats a nope
from me. However, still interested in any other recommendations for a
similar unit for ham usage. submitted by /u/geo_log_88

Motorola DTR/DLR programming

I know this is probably the wrong sub for my question so sorry in advance
and please point me on my way. I have a few motorola DLR and DTR radios Im trying to program. I need them set up so the 2 DTRs are always private but
can always hear the other DLRs. I dont mind switching channels on the DTRs
to reply to the others. I currently have them set up where the DLRs can initiate private calls to the DTRs but would rather not have that. Thanks

Whats your preferred QSL card vendor?
Posted: 02 Mar 2022 02:47 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/t5ceb3/whats_your_preferred_qsl_card_vendor/
I placed an order two weeks ago from a company, not realizing the origin. I’ll probably never get them. If you look at this, you’ll see why
Not going to ask for a refund on that, as I want them to keep their money
given the situation. But I’m looking for another good place to order QSL cards. Any leads?
I know I can design my own and have them printed, but I have 0 desire to do
so. submitted by /u/minorsecond

Scratched my itch - My first rig in 89 was a TS-140S that I sold years ago,

Very general NEWBIE question about Frequencies
Posted: 02 Mar 2022 06:59 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/t51xdl/very_general_newbie_question_about_frequencies/
Im only interested in monitoring frequencies for information. I do NOT have
my license and will not be transmitting.
Using a Baofeng:
I was told to put 146.520 on the top (2-meter), and 446.000 (70cm) on the bottom frequency. Will this trigger my Baofeng to scan these ranges, or do
I need to hop around and try different frequencies? I am completely lost
here. Any guidance appreciated. submitted by /u/Alternative_Tear9543

How Significant is 1.44 dB of Loss?
Posted: 02 Mar 2022 02:05 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/t5bh3r/how_significant_is_144_db_of_loss/
Getting ready to finally build an HF setup and it looks like DXE-400MAX
which is basically LMR-400 from DXE has loss of 0.8 dB per 100 ft. Looking
at around 180 feet of cable to get out and up to my dipole that Im planning
to put up.
If my math is right, this means Im looking at 1.44 dB of signal loss. This calculator says that -1.44 dB loss is equal to around a 28% loss.
This sounds like Im going to be losing 28% of my receive and transmit
signal? Is this acceptable? Do I basically need to be running hardline? Or
is my math off?
Any advice appreciated. submitted by /u/nertaxos

Help me identify a log file format
Posted: 02 Mar 2022 02:00 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/t5bcbh/help_me_identify_a_log_file_format/
I found a copy of an older log file - the file extension is .rlog and the
file appears to be a sqlite3 database.
I was able to open and browse the file using standard sqlite3 tools, so I
could build a conversion tool, but I’d rather identify the program so I can open it and export it in ADIF to load into my current log program.
My Google fu is failing me and I’m hoping someone recognizes the file extension. It could be a windows or mac application. submitted by /u/mattopia1

Kenwood Beat Shift?
Posted: 02 Mar 2022 08:41 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/t547hn/kenwood_beat_shift/
I just grabbed a TM-V71A, and Im reading through all the settings and
trying to get myself familiar. This is my first kenwood after having all
icom and Yaesus for both V/UHF and HF. I understand that beat shift will
shift the oscillators frequency, but what are symptoms that would arise
where I would go "ah ha! I should enable beat shift here". This is going to
be my mobile rig after moving my ID-880h to the QTH to pair with my 910h
and Anytone 578. I really wanted Data port (TNC) + dual VFO for mobile. Typically driving around suburban areas with occasional trips through small
CT cities. 73! submitted by /u/MrDrMrs
